OR: Constitutional Ban Stands in the Way of Marriage Equality

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Oregon Marriage EqualityWith the political makeup in Washington’s statehouse in favor of same-sex marriage, the state had little trouble getting a gay-marriage bill passed. But in Oregon, lawmakers don’t have the same authority as Washington lawmakers, because in Oregon they are prohibited from pursuing such a change in the law.

The reason goes back eight years to 2004 when Multnomah County began marrying same-sex couples. In response, Oregonians voted to amend the state constitution, declaring Oregon would recognize only marriages between a man and a woman. Ever since then, the Oregon state Legislature has not been legally able to work on the issue.

For Oregon to follow Washington’s lead, the entire state has to vote to undo that constitutional amendment.

More than 30 people took part in a Basic Rights Oregon town hall meeting Saturday, November 5th, 2011, at the First Christian Church in downtown Eugene.

Basic Rights Oregon is touring the state during the month of November to gather public input about when to put a marriage equality measure on the state ballot.

OR: Is it Time to Take Marriage Equality Back to the Ballot?

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Oregon Marriage EqualityBasic Rights Oregon will soon decide whether to pursue a 2012 ballot measure on marriage equality and I find myself torn. When it comes to issues of equality and injustice, I have always said to my children that you can never wait for a convenient time – we must keep fighting in every way we can.

Nevertheless, I am reluctant to go into battle again. My family was on the front lines of the 2004 campaign in a very public way — in countless media interviews and ads, as well as participating in the roller coaster of two lawsuits against the State for the right to marry. I well know the costs emotionally, personally and financially that this battle brings. The opposition is always ugly and ready to fight tooth and nail. And there’s no guarantee of winning.

I remember, too well, the days after the 2004 election, standing in the grocery store looking at people with distrust and pain wondering which among them voted against me and my family. And I remember the hurtful words within our own community turning on each other, second guessing and blaming our leaders and organizations for the loss rather than the voters.

OR: Basic Rights Oregon Still Considering 2012 Initiative

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Oregon Gay MarriageA clarification from Basic Rights Oregon:

Statement from Jeana Frazzini, Executive Director of Basic Rights Oregon:

An article by the Salem Statesman Journal inadvertently implied that Basic Rights Oregon has already decided to gather signatures for a 2012 ballot measure, while in fact we do not expect to make this decision until later this year. In the meantime, we continue our work to educate the public about why civil marriage matters to caring and committed same-sex couples.

OR: New Poll Says 48% Support Marriage Equality, 42% Opposed

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Oregon Gay Marriage PollA new Public Policy Polling survey of Oregon voters has some interesting things to say about gay marriage, Gov. John Kitzhaber, Sen. Jeff Merkley and Rep. David Wu.

In order:

Gay Marriage: Just as the New York Legislature is approving gay marriage in that state, Public Policy Polling found that 48 percent of Oregon voters support same-sex marriage, compared to 42 percent.

It’s certainly an indication that sentiment is changing following the 2004 election in which nearly 57 percent of Oregonians voted to place a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in the state. In the last year, Basic Rights Oregon has launched an effort to boost support for gay marriage and has talked about launching a ballot measure to repeal the ban as soon as 2012.
