Are We Partners, or…? What’s in a Word

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

I’ve called my boyfriend many things since he strolled into our first date almost six years ago. Late, first of all. He went to the wrong restaurant. But after that, dreamy. Next was friend, both with and without benefits. Lover, though usually in a funny kind of way, because that’s too cheesecake. Jerk. (I have a temper.)

I’ve called him a slew of nicknames that’d make Cupid giggle (or ralph, depending on his own marital status at the moment) – and I’ve even called him my husband. Y’know, ring and legality aside. We can’t get married, but maybe soon we can join the military and defend the country which denies us this basic right – and even “admit” that we’re gay! Go progress.

But one thing I’ve never called my boyfriend – well, other than punctual – is partner.

George Walker of the People’s Congregational United Church of Christ performed the ceremony – Kirdahy read a scene from McNally’s play “Corpus Christi” – and actress Tyne Daly served as a witness. The couple live in New York City.

Rufus Wainwright Becomes a Gay Marriage Supporter After Meeting Partner

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

Rufus Wainwright is supporting the fight to legalise same-sex unions in the U.S. – because he’d love to marry his longterm partner Jorn Weisbrodt. The singer has credited German theatre producer Jorn with inspiring him to speak out for gay rights, insisting he never wanted to settle down before meeting his partner.

But Wainwright is frustrated by laws that keep the couple from sealing their union. He says, “I have been with Jorn for five years and he;s the light of my life. He’s my inspiration, support and he’s good in the sack, too! But I am very aware of living in the U.S., of the conundrum that you can’t marry your gay partner and give him citizenship.

“He has to apply for a green card and he may or may not get accepted, which is annoying when you’re in a committed relationship. If we were straight, we could get married and he”d get his American passport and it would make a lot of sense. I wasn’t a huge gay marriage supporter before I met Jorn because I love the whole old-school promiscuous Oscar Wilde freak show of what ‘being gay’ once was. But since meeting Jorn that all changed.”
