Queensland Premier and ALP national president Anna Bligh has backed the right of same-sex couples to marry. Her stance puts her at odds with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and comes as federal parliamentarians from Labor’s Left faction push for more progressive policies.
Federal Sports Minister Mark Arbib, the Labor Right powerbroker who helped install Ms Gillard as prime minister, yesterday called on the party to allow MPs a free vote on gay marriage.
Ms Bligh, who became the party’s national president three months ago, told brisbanetimes.com.au she supported legalising gay marriage.
