Australia: Federal Finance Minister Rejects Marriage Equality Conscience Vote

Friday, November 18th, 2011

Australia Marriage Equality Conscience VoteFederal Finance Minister Penny Wong has this morning rejected Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s call for a conscience vote on marriage equality.

In an opinion piece inMelbourne’s The Age newspaper this morning Senator Wong – who’s partner Sophie Allouache is expecting the couple’s first child next month – used America’s pre-1967 laws prohibiting inter-racial marriage to argue for the granting of full marriage equality in Australia.

“In today’s Australia it seems extraordinary such prejudice was once widely accepted. But these references are less important for what they convey about the past, than what they tell us about today. They remind us how much change is possible, that prejudice dissipates. Most of all they remind us how powerful the principle of equality is,” the senator wrote.

Australia: Why I Love Penny Wong

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Australia's Penny WongHave I told you how much I love Penny Wong? Not like that, obviously. Never met the woman. In fact, my one attempt to interview her, back when I had her tagged as the first female prime minister, met with rebuff, rebuff and more rebuff from her staunch staff stockade. But I love her anyway because she strikes me as really bright, really principled and really straight. Not hetero-straight, clearly. Look-you-straight-in-the-eye straight. Straight-shooter straight. Straight, straight.

This alone stands out in a country typically led by blindfold guppies. But I love her even more for being a Malaysian-born Chinese lesbian mother-to-be, proving against the odds that unorthodoxy can still rise to the top here, and for no other reason than outright merit. Verily, it makes me proud to be Australian.

So the ruckus over Wong’s baby, and the responsibilities heaped upon its unborn head – from the London riots to the Marriage Equality Bill – make me mad. There is a righteous tub-thumping here, an emergent irrationality that should worry us all.

Australia: Gillard Won’t Let Lesbian Minister’s Pregnancy Affect Marriage Equality Stance

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Australia’s finance minister announced yesterday that she is expecting a child with her female partner, but although Prime Minister Julia Gillard offered her warmest congratulations, she refused to budge in her opposition to gay marriage.

Penny Wong’s partner, Sophie Allouache, conceived through IVF using donor sperm and is expecting in December. The news has reignited debate over same-sex partnership in the country.

There are increasing calls for Ms Gillard’s centre-left Labor Party to lift its ban on gay marriages at their conference in December, but while the Premier said she was “very pleased” for Ms Wong, 42, and Ms Allouache, 35, she stood firm in her view that wedlock should be reserved for a man and a woman.

Australia: Lesbian Finance Minister Who Used to Oppose Marriage Equality is Expecting

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Australian finance minister Penny Wong and her partner Sophie Allouache are expecting a baby, through in vitro fertilization, Wong said in a statement:

“Like any expecting parents, the prospect of welcoming this child into our lives fills us both with joy,” she said. “We are extremely grateful to our IVF service and staff, and to our donor, for giving us the opportunity to raise a child together.”

Prime Minister Julia Gillard welcomed the news.”I’m very pleased for Penny and her partner Sophie as they look forward to a new baby and the next phase of their lives,” she told reporters in Canberra.

Australia: Wong’s Conversion on Marriage Equality Improves Chances for Passage

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Federal Finance Minister Penny Wong’s push for gay marriage rights will increase the chances of same-sex marriage laws being introduced in the state, proponents say. On Saturday, Senator Wong was given a standing ovation at the Labor State Convention after endorsing a motion supporting same-sex marriage.

The motion, which was passed 90 votes to 88, will increase pressure on the federal Labor party to change its formal position on gay marriage at its national conference next year. South Australia’s resolution mirrors those already passed in Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory.

Last week, a same-sex marriage Bill co-sponsored by state ALP backbencher Ian Hunter and Greens MLC Tammy Franks was deferred because Premier Mike Rann had not declared whether the issue would be subject to a conscience vote.

Australia: Lesbian Labor Minister Speaks Out Against Marriage Equality

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

OPENLY lesbian Climate Change Minister Penny Wong is under fire from the gay community after declaring her opposition to gay marriage. Australian Marriage Equality spokesperson Alex Greenwich said Senator Wong’s rationale for opposing marriage equality was hypocritical. Mr Greenwich said Senator Wong would never have made it into politics if discrimination against gays and Asians had not been opposed.

“By opposing marriage equality, Penny Wong has betrayed gay and lesbian Australians, and by using culture, religion and history to justify this opposition she has betrayed the principles of tolerance and inclusion that have given her immense opportunities as a lesbian woman of Chinese descent,” he said.

On the Ten Network yesterday, Senator Wong said she respected Labor’s view of marriage as an institution between a man and a woman.
