Malacanan Palace has denied that Philippines President Benigno Aquino III supports same-sex marriage, following widespread media reports last week that he had. On Thursday they said:

“President Aquino is not ready to tackle the issue of gay marriage for now. We have so many problems in the government. I think we would like to address concerns on poverty and corruption before anything else.”

Pressed for a date for Aquino to announce his stand on the matter anytime soon, Palace spokesman Edwin Lacierda said: “That answer is ambiguous. He is not ready to discuss the issue of gay marriage.”

Philippines Considers Punishment for Gay Couples Who Participated in Mass Wedding

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Gay-affirming Metropolitan Community Church carried out a mass wedding for gay and lesbian families in Baguio, the Philippines, on June 25. Now the city government is considering whether to prosecute those who participated, reported the Baguio Sun-Star on July 2.

The event was part of the city’s Pride Month celebrations. The mass wedding drew sharp criticism from leaders of other religious traditions, the newspaper reported.

Before the wedding took place, a Catholic cleric, Bishop Carlito Cenzon, condemned the plan, saying, “Same-sex wedding is wrong and cannot be called a holy union,” the Sun-Star reported in a June 23 article.

Philippines: Town to Hold Mass Gay Wedding June 25th

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

The first-of-its-kind lesbian and gay wedding in the country will be held in a still undisclosed venue in the city on Saturday. The event is organized by members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender (LGBT) Community’s Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) of Metro Baguio and several of its chapters nationwide in celebration of the 5th Baguio LGBT Pride parade.

The group will be holding ecumenical worship and mass wedding for same-sex couples for free and to be witnessed by the public in a venue to be announced later. With the theme “Kalayaang Umibig, Pag-ibig sa Kalayaan”, the mass wedding will witness a still undisclosed number of couples exchanging “I do’s”, making the nation’s summer capital as the venue for one of the most controversial events in this predominantly Catholic country.

Although same-sex marriage is prohibited under the country’s laws, the local church will continue to conduct what they describe as a holy union, one of the basic rights of metropolitan churches all over the global village.

Philippines: Gays Push for Anti Discrimination Law

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activists trooped to the House of Representatives on the eve of a global gay rights anniversary to seek the passage of a long-delayed measure protecting human rights based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Members of the Progressive Organization of Gays (ProGay-Philippines) held a brief picket at the gates of the Batasang Pambansa in colorful rainbow costumes as part of the worldwide observance of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) today.

“We call on the House of Representatives to start holding hearings on the Anti-Discrimination Act of 2010 because it will help end homophobia and unequal application of human rights for LGBTs,” ProGay spokesperson Goya Candelario said.

Philippines: LGBT Rights Bill Proposed

Friday, January 21st, 2011

Philippines LGBT RightsHB 1483 has certainly made efforts to provide for a legal definition to the ‘invisible’, as well as lay down what constitutes sexual orientation and gender identity.

In the proposed bill, sexual orientation refers to the direction of emotional sexual attraction or conduct. This can be toward people of the same sex (homosexual orientation) or toward people of both sexes (bisexual orientation) or toward people of the opposite sex (heterosexual orientation). It is not equivalent to sexual behavior since this refers to feelings and self-concept. Persons may or may not express their sexual orientation in their behaviors.

The Philippine LGBT community supports the passage of HB 1483 but insists that they do not want nor claim additional “special” or “additional rights.” Gender identity, in the meantime, is referred to in the bill as “the personal sense of identity as characterized, among others, by manners of clothing, inclinations, and behavior in relation to masculine or feminine conventions.” A person may have a male or female identity with the physiological characteristics of the opposite sex.

Philippines: Lawmaker Calls for Gay Anti-Discrimination Law

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

PhilippinesHOMOPHOBIA has put the lesbian and gay rights in the Philippines in the backseat, a lawmaker said Saturday. Rep. Kaka Bag-ao of Akbayan party-list, the principal author of House Bill 515, or the Act prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and providing penalties, noted that such homophobia is stirred by the fact that the country has no standing policy on human rights abuses against lesbians, gays bisexual and transgenders (LGBT).

“Here in the Philippines, you can fire a gay or lesbian employee simply because of their sexual orientation or gender identity and get away with it. You can expel lesbian and gay students arbitrarily or impose arbitrary rules against them and you won’t face any charges. It’s wrong,” Bag-ao said.

Without any enabling law, Bag-ao noted that the constitutional rights and freedoms of LGBTs can be easily violated and discrimination against LGBTs goes unpunished.

Philippines: New President Supports Gay Rights, But Not Gay Marriage

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

With his penchant for badly fitting shirts, dorky hair style, and complete lack of personal charisma, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino appears the most unlikely person to win an election by a landslide. But with most of the votes counted, Mr Vanilla of Manila has galloped into Malacanang Palace, the official residence of the President of the Philippines.

There were nine presidential contenders in this week’s general election and Noynoy seized close to 40% of the vote. In a country with over 7000 far flung islands, the call usually takes days, sometimes weeks, but with a new electronic voting system and such a handsome lead, it was clear 16 hours after the polls closed that Aquino was the winner.

Mr. Aquino says he will acknowledge the rights of homosexuals, another issue which will have him in conflict with the church. “Gays shouldn’t be discriminated against in terms of occupation and other aspects,” he has said, although he is “not prepared to support gay marriage.”
