USA: House Leaders Join Effort to Add Marriage Equality PlankMore than half a dozen Democratic Congressional leaders today signed onto Freedom to Marry’s “Democrats: Say I Do” campaign calling for a freedom to marry plank in the 2012 national platform of the Democratic Party.

The signers include three key contenders for the U.S. Senate from swing states: Tammy Baldwin (D-WI); Shelly Berkley (D-NV); and Martin Heinrich (D-NM).

Additional new signers include Ranking Democrat of the House Judiciary Committee John Conyers (D-MI); Judiciary Committee member Mike Quigley (D-IL); former Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Chris Van Hollen (D-MD); and Representative Jared Polis (D-CO).

USA: Senate Candidate Baldwin Calls for Marriage Equality Plank

Marriage EqualityU.S. Senate candidate Tammy Baldwin has joined the chorus of those calling for an endorsement of marriage equality in the Democratic Party platform, saying the inclusion of such language would be a “statement of values.”

In an exclusive interview with the Washington Blade on Sunday, Baldwin said the inclusion of same-sex marriage in the platform would be “very important.”

“”I think that would be tremendous, and we have to be focusing on advancing equality in so many different realms,” Baldwin said. “It’s a statement of values, and I think it’s very important to be included.”

Grindr Gets Political, Pushes Democratic Party to Add Marriage Equality Plank

Grindr and Marriage EqualityCourage Campaign and gay activists including Pam Spaulding (Pam’s House Blend blog) have teamed with Grindr, the gay men’s dating app, to leverage the Democratic National Committee to support marriage equality.

The campaign hopes to mobilize Grindr users to sign pro-marriage equality petitions, which will be delivered to DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the South Florida congresswoman.

Los Angeles — The Courage Campaign, a national, progressive and grassroots online organization, and Grindr for Equality, the gay rights and political action initiative mobilizing members of the world’s largest all-male social network Grindr, have teamed up to petition the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to help fund efforts to support marriage equality in various ballot initiative fights this election year.

Does Australia’s Labor Left Have Votes to Change Party’s Marriage Equality Plank?

ALP's Marriage Equality PolicyTHE ALP’s Left faction is claiming the numbers to remove from the party’s policy platform a reference to the Marriage Act which defines the union as that between a man and a woman.

And it has not given up defeating Julia Gillard’s call for a conscience vote on gay marriage, with sources saying the numbers are ”line ball” in achieving a policy change from one of opposition to outright support.

With gay marriage to be debated at this week’s ALP national conference, the Left is courting votes from the Right, which is split. The Left needs 20 extra votes from the Right to achieve a majority of 201 delegates and secure a platform change.
