Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Pope Benedict on Saturday met with Orthodox Christians during a tour stop in Freiburg, Germany, the AP reported.

During the third day of a visit to his native Germany, the 84-year-old pope called for a common front with Christian churches to defend the church’s traditional values.

Christian churches “are walking side by side” in the battle against threats posed by abortion and gay marriage, the pontiff said.

Spain: Pope Blesses Large Anti-Gay Mass in Madrid

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Anti Gay Marriage Mass in MadridPope Benedict XVI blessed an anti-gay marriage mass held Sunday in Madrid, Spain, Clarin.com reported. Tens of thousands of people lined the city’s downtown Plaza de Colon square to celebrate the mass conducted by Cardinal Atonio Ruoco Varela, the archbishop of Madrid.

Ruoco Varela attacked the reforms of the socialist government, which include gay marriage, fast-track divorce and easier access to abortions. He talked about the truth of marriage, a veiled reference to the country’s 5 year old gay marriage law.

“Anytime you deny the truth of marriage and family, in theory or practice, the negative consequences will come forward rapidly,” he said.

Spain: Group Plans Kiss-in to Protest Papal Visit

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Popee BenedictThe gay rights group Queer Kissing Flashmob is organizing a kissing protest against Pope Benedict XVI when he tours Spain next month. The group says it will protest the pope’s stance against gay relations and marriage equality by staging a giant kissing demonstration in front of the Holy Father.

“When Benedict XVI passed before us, we’ll kiss, man with man or woman with woman,” Carole Marylene, an organizer of the event, told Spanish news agency EFE. “It is curious to note how an act so noble as a kiss can be considered revolutionary, even in the 21st century.”

Gay couples and sympathizing straight couples will lock lips as the pontiff begins his procession from Barcelona’s Plaza de la Catedral to the Sagrada Familia on Sunday, November 7 at 9 AM.

UK: Three Gay “Angels” Protest Pope’s Visit

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Gaydar Warrior AngelsYesterday, the Pope paid a visit to St. Mary’s University in Twickenham, UK, which happens to be the town where social networking site Gaydar is headquartered.

Greeting the pope in protest were three scantily clad “Gaydar Warrior Angels”.

The Telegraph reports:

“Martin Beckford has filed this colour from Twickenham: ‘A stream of guests arriving at St Mary’s University College to see the Pope were surprised to find three half-naked homsexual men donning gold wings before launching their protest. The trio, who called themselves Gaydar’s Warrior Angels, said they wanted the Church to be more accepting of homosexuality. On the narrow road outside the college stood about 20 protestors, most individuals rather than representing groups.’”

UK: Government Apologizes for Leaked Document Suggesting the Pope Bless a Gay Marriage

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Britain’s foreign office has apologised for a memorandum by a civil servant suggesting Pope Benedict should open a hospital abortion ward when he visits Britain this year. The document, which was leaked to the Sunday Telegraph newspaper, also included proposals that the Pope should bless a gay marriage and launch papal-branded condoms when he comes to Britain in September.

The paper said the ideas, ridiculing the teachings of the Catholic Church against abortion and contraception, resulted from a “brainstorm” session. It said Britain’s ambassador to the Vatican had expressed the government’s regret to senior officials there.

“This is clearly a foolish document that does not in any way reflect UK government or FCO policy or views,” a spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said.

Portugal: President Will Veto Gay Marriage Bill After Pope Arrives

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva will veto a gay marriage bill approved by lawmakers in February, Radio Renascenca reported. Cavaco Silva will veto the bill soon after Pope Benedict’s arrival on May 11.

Last month, the president, a Roman Catholic and a member of the PSD party, groups which oppose the legalization of gay marriage, forwarded four out of five of the bill’s articles to the country’s Constitutional Court, setting aside a measure that prohibits gay adoption. He said he did so because he doubted the bill’s constitutionality, but refused to say why he did not include the article on adoption.

The court’s majority, however, ruled the four articles to be constitutional earlier this month. The president has 20 days from the ruling’s official publication – which has yet to happen – to either reject the measure or allow it come into force.

Pope Says Nothing to Uganda’s Bishops About Kill-The-Gays Bill

Monday, March 8th, 2010

Pope Benedict XVI met with the Roman Catholic hierarchy of Uganda at the Vatican last Friday and delivered a speech summing up what he saw as the main tasks of the church in the East African nation – but made no mention of the draconian anti-homosexuality bill that has prompted an international outcry.

The legislation pending in the Ugandan parliament provides for life imprisonment for homosexuals and even execution in some cases – hence its nickname, the “kill the gays” bill – and for jail terms for those who do not out those they believe to be homosexuals.

The bill has not only sparked international protests, but also finger-pointing at conservative American Christians who have been seen as giving aid and comfort to Ugandan Christians and politicians who want to toughen Uganda’s law criminalizing homosexuality.
