Kenya: Prime Minister Says Gays Should Be Arrested

Monday, November 29th, 2010

An official with Kenya’s largest gay rights organization says there is panic among its members following remarks made by Kenya’s prime minister that homosexuals should be arrested.

Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya board member Nguru Karugu said Monday the office has received calls from concerned members, some of whom are HIV-positive and fear they will be arrested when they collect life-prolonging medicine from government clinics.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Sunday said homosexuals who are found in the midst of sex acts will be arrested. Odinga’s spokesman said Monday that the prime minister was quoted out of context.

Australia: Gillard Mum on Gay Marriage Support Even if Party Changes Stance

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageJULIA Gillard is digging in on gay marriage, declining to say whether she would support a change of policy even if Labor’s national conference shifted the current platform in favour of same-sex unions.

The Prime Minister’s remarks yesterday came ahead of a landmark vote in the House of Representatives this morning on a motion designed to smooth the path for same-sex marriage.

Parliamentary sources expressed considerable confidence last night that the Greens-initiated proposal would have sufficient votes when the vote happens this morning.

Australia: PM Gillard Digs In on Anti-Gay Marriage Position

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriagePrime Minister Julia Gillard remains opposed to gay unions, putting her at odds with right-wing Labor powerbroker Mark Arbib. Senator Arbib is the first frontbencher to say he believes his party should support gay marriage.

He says gay people should have the legal right to get married, and MPs should be given a conscience vote on the controversial matter.

“If I was the parent of a gay son or daughter I don’t know how I could tell them they didn’t have the same rights as I did,” Mr Arbib told The Weekend Australian.

Spain: Prime Minister Candidate Might Push for Gay Marriage Repeal if Elected

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

UPDATE: Mariano Rajoy has confirmed that he will scrap the law allowing same-sex couples to marry if he wins the elections in 2012. The right-wing PP leader says he does not care if the High Court has ratified the law, since he considers it ‘unconstitutional’.

———-

The president of the Partido Popular, Mariano Rajoy, has refused to say if he is “committed” to keeping the gay marriage law if elected Prime Minister in the next general election, as he says he is not sure if it is “constitutional.”

Rajoy, pictured, was asked the question today in an interview with El Pais today. The PP lodged a constitutional complaint against the measure five years ago, and Rajoy has not pledged to keep it, even if it was endorsed by the Constitutional Court.

“I will listen very carefully to the arguments of the Constitutional Court and the people, but I do not like the homosexual marriage act, and I do not think it is constitutional. My disagreement is about the use of the word ‘marriage’” said the leader of the Spanish opposition.

Australia: PM’s Stepdaughter Supports Gay Marriage

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

The daughter of PM Julia Gillard’s boyfriend is a real firecracker – and she’s with us on the gay marriage issue. 31-year-old Staci Child, who lives in New York with a woman she says is her best friend, posed wearing very little for the latest issue of racy Aussie bloke mag Zoo.

The magazine’s staff asked her: “If you were Prime Minister for a day, are there any changes you’d make?” Child replied: “Oh, I’d probably let gays get married.”

The photoshoot and interview has been on hold until the election result was confirmed, but now that Gillard’s installed officially in the top job, Zoo ‘moved forward’ with the sexy spread.

Australia: Atheist Gillard Cites Country’s “Christian Heritage” to Continue Marriage Equality Ban

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has told The Australian that she will not change her mind on same-sex marriage while she is in power. Despite her lack of faith, she said same-sex marriage should remain illegal out of respect for Australia’s Christian “heritage”.

Gillard told the newspaper she appreciated Australia’s “heritage as a Christian country”, adding that “the Marriage Act has a special status in our culture” as a heterosexuals-only institution.

Australian Marriage Equality national secretary Peter Furness demanded that Gillard explain what Australia’s “Christian heritage” has to do with same-sex marriage.

Australia: New PM Decides to Keep Ban on Recognition of Overseas Weddings

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010

The Labor Government is stopping Australian same-sex couples from marrying overseas as well as at home. Last week the Gillard Government informed marriage equality advocates that it has decided not to remove the ban, in place since at least 2005, on issuing Australians in same-sex relationships with the documents they need to marry overseas, called Certificates of Non-Impediment to Marriage or CNIs.

Last year’s Senate inquiry into marriage equality recommended lifting the CNI ban, even though it did not support allowing same-sex marriages in Australia.

Local marriage equality activists say they are deeply disappointed by the Labor Party’s failure to abide by the Senate inquiry recommendation, and would support a legal challenge to the ban.

Australia: New PM Gillard Rules Out Gay Marriage

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Julia GillardOther local gay media have tried and failed to get an interview with Australia’s new Prime Minister on the gay marriage issue – but it took a quick-thinking young Same Samer to get results. “This morning 2dayFM was taking calls to ask Julia Gillard a question, I took the opportunity to call through (took a few attempts but I got through) and my question was ‘what is her view on same sex marriage, and would she consider legalising it?’” typed 20-year-old Tatsuya on our Forum today.

“This is the frank answer, we’d got very clear Labor party policy on this and it won’t be changing – that we believe the marriage act is appropriate in its current form, that it’s recognising that marriage is between a man and a woman, but we have as a government taken steps to equalise treatment for gay couples, in the things that government does in social security benefits and the like.”

Pressed for her personal views on the issue by the show’s co-host Jackie O, Gillard stood firm. “Look, that is my view, I think that’s where we’re at as a community now, and I think it’s appropriate that for these very sensitive issues that we’re reflecting community views.”

Iceland: Lesbian Prime Minister Marries Partner

Monday, June 28th, 2010

Iceland’s prime minister has tied the knot with her partner under a new law legalising same-sex marriage in the country, officials said. Johanna Sigurdardottir and writer Jonina Leosdottir were officially married on Sunday, the day the law came into force, the PM’s adviser Hrannar B Arnarsson said.

The pair had been in a registered partnership since 2002 and had applied to have it converted into a marriage under the new law. No ceremony was held. The law was passed without a dissenting vote in Iceland’s parliament on June 11.

Social Democrat Ms Sigurdardottir, 68, became Iceland’s prime minister last year after the previous centre-right government was ousted by a wave of protest triggered by the country’s economic crisis.
