IL: Anti Gay Group From Pennsylvania Protests Civil Unions in Palatine

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Illinois Civil Unions ProtestAmongst the steady blare of car horns in support and occasional obscene gestures in derision, 10 men from the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) protested against gay marriage Friday afternoon at the intersection of Rand and Dundee Roads in Palatine.

The group drove 800 miles from York, Pa., to stage several protests across Illinois this week following the state’s adoption of a civil union law, which went into effect on June 1 of this year, allowing same-sex couples many of the same legal protections as marriage.

After its enactment, 1,399 couples were issued civil union licenses in Lake, Cook, DuPage, Kane and McHenry counties in June and July.

MN: Gay Couple Marries in Protest

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Towleroad readers Patrick and Scott sent us this clip of their wedding in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where a measure to ban same-sex marriage will be on the ballot in November.

Writes the couple: “Although our marriage is not legal yet, here’s hoping it will be soon.” Patrick and Scott’s wedding was beautifully shot by John Hoel, who writes:

“It was truly a day I’ll never forget and I was so honored to have captured it. Elizabeth couldn’t have put it more eloquently during the ceremony, ‘When our law lags behind, people continue to live their truth and create their own version of a family, and this is what Patrick and Scott are deciding to do today.’

NY: Queer Rising Activists Arrested in Protest

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Queer Rising ProtestBarely a month after shutting down Sixth Avenue in Midtown during a morning rush-hour demonstration demanding equal marriage rights for same-sex couples, Queer Rising, a grassroots direct action group, blocked traffic on Third Avenue for roughly ten minutes at the 5 p.m. rush on April 4 outside Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Manhattan office.

A 75-foot banner that five activists handcuffed and chained to each other unfurled across the south side of 41st Street at Third Avenue read, “Marriage Equality NOW! Call Cuomo: 518-474-8390!!!”

Those demonstrators and a crowd of several dozen on hand, some of whom joined them from a coordinated action at Grand Central Terminal just moments before, shouted, “I am… somebody. And I demand… equality. Right here. Right now.”

NY: Queer Rising Activists Arrested After Marriage Equality Protest

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Queer Rising New York ProtestMore news on gay rights activists that blocked traffic this morning in New York City, at Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street, calling on the New York State government to pass marriage equality in this session.

The Press Release from Queer Rising:

New York, NY – The LGBTQ activist organization Queer Rising’s protest against New York’s discriminatory marriage laws ends in arrest after eight members refused to move from the intersection at 42nd St. and 6th Avenue. A 75-foot banner reading “NY DEMANDS MARRIAGE EQUALITY NOW!” was unfurled.

Unwilling to wait any longer for equal rights and protection from the state of New York, the eight activists refused to let Manhattan go on with business as usual while thousands of LGBTQ families live as second-class citizens. LGBTQ people throughout the state are no longer willing to remain silent until the unjust marriage laws change.
