NY: Queer Rising Activists Arrested After Marriage Equality Protest

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Queer Rising New York ProtestMore news on gay rights activists that blocked traffic this morning in New York City, at Sixth Avenue and 42nd Street, calling on the New York State government to pass marriage equality in this session.

The Press Release from Queer Rising:

New York, NY – The LGBTQ activist organization Queer Rising’s protest against New York’s discriminatory marriage laws ends in arrest after eight members refused to move from the intersection at 42nd St. and 6th Avenue. A 75-foot banner reading “NY DEMANDS MARRIAGE EQUALITY NOW!” was unfurled.

Unwilling to wait any longer for equal rights and protection from the state of New York, the eight activists refused to let Manhattan go on with business as usual while thousands of LGBTQ families live as second-class citizens. LGBTQ people throughout the state are no longer willing to remain silent until the unjust marriage laws change.

TX: Gay Allies Protest El Paso Vote Stripping Domestic Partner Benefits

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Supporters of the gay community protested outside of the Word of Life church Tuesday. The protest comes on the heels of the Rev. Tom Brown trying to prevent City Council from rescinding voter-approved ordinances for up to two years.

With signs in hand and candles lit, supporters in the gay community went out with a clear message. “It’s a little bit late in our life cycle in 2010 to be talking about who people are screwing,” said Lisa Degliantoni, the protest organizer.

The topic of giving domestic partners of city employees benefits has been making headlines in the Borderland for months after City Council passed an ordinance to give health care benefits to domestic partners of city employees, including same sex.

Spain: Gays Protest Pope’s Visit With Kiss-In

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Spain Kiss-in ProtestPope Benedict XVI strongly defended conservative family values and condemned abortion in Barcelona on Sunday as he held a ceremony consecrating the Sagrada Familia basilica, a monument to the holy family.

Benedict XVI rode down the streets in his bullet-proof glass-encased “popemobile,” some 200 gay rights activists protested by kissing for five minutes.

“We are here to demonstrate against the pope’s visit and call for a change in the mentality of the Catholic institution which still opposes our right to different ways of loving,” said Sergi Diaz, one of the protesters. The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered.”

Italian Group Arcigay to Protest Berlusconi Comments

Saturday, November 6th, 2010

Silvio BerlusconiItalian gay rights group Arcigay will protest today against comments made by its Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi that it is “better to admire beautiful women than be gay”.

The group has started the campaign Bring A Fennel, which urges gays in Italy to gather in front of the Prefecture in Florence with a fennel to be delivered to the Italian premier.

Members of the group explain the reason for the protest. They said: “Seeds of fennel were used in the Middle Ages to drive down the smell of human flesh of the homosexuals burnt at the stake. Tomorrow {Saturday} we’ll give back those fennels to Mr. Berlusconi, because we’re tired of being subjected to discriminations, humiliations and harassments, that every year in Italy overkill thousands of lesbians, gays and transsexuals”.

Spain: Group Plans Kiss-in to Protest Papal Visit

Monday, October 25th, 2010

Popee BenedictThe gay rights group Queer Kissing Flashmob is organizing a kissing protest against Pope Benedict XVI when he tours Spain next month. The group says it will protest the pope’s stance against gay relations and marriage equality by staging a giant kissing demonstration in front of the Holy Father.

“When Benedict XVI passed before us, we’ll kiss, man with man or woman with woman,” Carole Marylene, an organizer of the event, told Spanish news agency EFE. “It is curious to note how an act so noble as a kiss can be considered revolutionary, even in the 21st century.”

Gay couples and sympathizing straight couples will lock lips as the pontiff begins his procession from Barcelona’s Plaza de la Catedral to the Sagrada Familia on Sunday, November 7 at 9 AM.

Serbia: Several Thousand March in Anti-Gay Protest

Saturday, October 9th, 2010

Several thousand Serbs marched in Belgrade on Saturday in protest against a gay pride parade planned for Sunday. Participants ranged from families with children to young football supporters, some of whom gave fascist salutes and shouted for the death of homosexuals.

Police kept a close eye on the march from the city centre towards the parliament, organised by the extreme nationalist Dveri organisation, but there were no incidents.

“The state does nothing to help families yet it authorises this unnatural rally,” Dveri spokesman Miroslav Parovic said. “We want it stopped.”

UT: 2-3,000 Protest for Gay Rights Outside Mormon Church

Friday, October 8th, 2010

The LDS Church re-emphasized Thursday night that its doctrine on marriage and family is based on respect and love, as 2,000-3,000 people protested for gay rights and recognition in downtown Salt Lake City.

“Of course, the church recognizes the right of groups to voice their opinion in the public square. However, those familiar with the church’s doctrine on the importance of marriage and family know it is based on principles of respect and love for all of God’s children,” the church’s statement said. “We have continually emphasized that there is no room in this discussion for hatred or mistreatment of anyone.”

Protesters gathered at City Creek Park and then crossed over to public sidewalks to form back-to-back lines around Temple Square in a silent protest.
