ME: Why the No on 1 Campaign Failed

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

The manager for the “No on 1″ campaign in Maine that sought to keep voters there from overturning marriage-equality legislation last fall pondered the lessons of the unsuccessful effort at a Netroots Nation panel in Las Vegas on Thursday.

“This is still very painful for us to talk about. We put forth a campaign that we thought was going to be the first one in the nation to win,” he said of him and his fellow panelists, Julia Rosen with the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Adam Bink of OpenLeft.com, and Joe Sudbay of AmericaBlog.com, all of whom worked closely with the campaign in different capacities.

Connolly thanked the room of activists for engaging so thoughtfully in rehashing the effort. “This is something that, for a straight ally like me, is one the most important things in my life – to figure out how we win these campaigns,” he said.

ME: NOM asks Ethics Commission to Dismiss Investigation

Monday, June 21st, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage will ask the state ethics commission Thursday to dismiss an investigation into the fundraising techniques it used prior to last year’s gay-marriage vote.

The group believes the commission does not have the authority to conduct the investigation, said Barry Bostrom, an attorney with the Indiana law firm Bopp, Coleson & Bostrom.

In October, the commission directed its staff to investigate whether the National Organization for Marriage should have registered with the state as a ballot question committee. State law says groups that raise or spend more than $5,000 trying to influence the outcome of any Maine election must register with the state and disclose their donors.

ME: Appeals Judge Blocks Order to NOM to Release Donor Info

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

A federal appeals judge has blocked an order that Maine officials be given information about donors who helped finance a successful campaign to repeal Maine’s gay marriage law.

Friday’s U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals order remains in effect until a further order of the court.

A magistrate judge earlier this week recommended that the National Organization for Marriage turn over information about donors and fundraising to the Maine attorney general’s office. NOM was a major donor to last fall’s referendum campaign to repeal Maine’s law legalizing gay marriage.

ME: Judge Rules that NOM has to Turn Over Donor List

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

State officials should be given the names of donors who helped to finance last year’s successful campaign to repeal Maine’s gay-marriage law, according to a preliminary order by a federal magistrate judge.

In a ruling dated Sunday, U.S. Magistrate Judge John Rich III said the National Organization for Marriage, which contributed $1.9 million to the repeal campaign, should give documents relating to donors and fundraising dating back to Jan. 1, 2009, to the Maine Attorney General’s Office. Those names, under Rich’s order, could not be made public but could be shared with state officials.

Rich denied a request for documents dating back to Jan. 1, 2008, saying the gay-marriage campaign was not yet active. For Rich’s order to take effect, a federal district judge must sign off on it. That may not happen for a few more weeks.
