IA: Social Conservatives to Rally Against Marriage Equality

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Iowa Anti Marriage Equality RallyIowa social conservatives on Tuesday will descend on the Capitol to pressure Senate President Mike Gronstal to allow an amendment banning gay marriage to come up for a vote in the chamber.

Opponents of the Iowa Supreme Court’s unanimous 2009 ruling legalizing gay marriage want lawmakers to approve an amendment to the Iowa Constitution which would define marriage as a heterosexual union.

Last year, the Republican-controlled House easily approved the amendment, but Gronstal, a Democrat, blocked the measure from reaching the Senate floor, angering conservatives who have threatened to oust him.

ID: Anti Marriage Equality Group Holds Rally in Nampa

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

Idaho Anti Marriage Equality RallyPro-marriage supporters rallied in downtown Nampa, asking for drivers to honk, if they think marriage should only be between a man and woman.

Social Worker Margaret Rolen said the reason she is against gay relationships is for the future generation. “Children do better in a stable family of mom and dad,” she said.

Keith Phillips, the executive director of Boise Pride, a diversity group, says that ideology doesn’t make sense to him. “There are plenty of examples of children in a mother – father situation, who don’t have good parents,” he said.

NC: Hundreds Rally in Raleigh Against Amendment One

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Amendment One RallyMarching from the campus of North Carolina State University to the mall at the state capitol on Thursday, opponents of a proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage were hoping to make their largest public show of support so far in the last southeastern state without such a provision in law.

The turnout, which Raleigh and state capitol police estimated at around 300, fell short of the 1,000 expected by organizers, underscoring the challenge that opponents face less than two months before the May 8 vote.

“A lot of people think North Carolina is a lost cause being in the southeast, but North Carolina is a pretty progressive state,” said Scott Heath of Honest NC, the group that organized the “Ides of Love” march.

NC: Anti Amendment One Rally Today in Raleigh

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Amendment One RallyWith less than two months to go before the May 8 primaries some North Carolinians are making a final push to “say no to Amendment 1.”

HonestNC, a group of community organizers from N.C. State, will gather at Halifax Mall and march from the Bell Tower to the State Legislature on Thursday. The march begins at 11:00a.m. and HonestNC expects several thousand people to join the march protesting the proposed amendment that would ban gay marriage in North Carolina.

North Carolina’s state law currently defines marriage as a union between one man and one woman, but supporters of a constitutional amendment say it doesn’t go far enough. Supporters say the marriage amendment defends traditional marriage and is a “moral issue” that needs to be spelled out in the constitution.

Gays March for Marriage Equality in Mississippi

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

A planned Jackson, Mississippi march for LGBT equality was stopped short yesterday by police permit issues, but that didn’t prevent the 50+ gathered activists from rallying on the steps of the state Capitol.

Organized by 18-year-old Bob Gilchrist with support from GetEQUAL, the protest sought to raise awareness for LGBT protections in a state that has none whatsoever. Gilchrist spoke of his own experience being bullied for being gay and called on the state to break free of its reputation for discrimination:

GILCHRIST: We’re not going to settle as second class citizens and we’re going to keep on protesting until the day that we become equal citizens… There’s a whole anti-gay culture in Mississippi and I want to battle that head on. We’re not a stigma, we’re not freaks that live underground, we’re ordinary people that happen to be gay and homosexuality is very real and you can’t pray it away.

NJ: Marriage Equality Rally Planned in Montclair Tuesday

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

Marriage Equality RallyThis past week in a historic vote in New Jersey, the state Assembly voted 42-33 to approve gay marriage. The state Senate also approved the same measure, but Gov. Chris Christie promised to veto the measure as soon as it hit his desk – and he did late Friday.

His decision has come under criticism and some elected officials have said they will work to override the governor’s veto – though it is not clear if there will be enough votes to do so.

In light of what’s happened, there will be a rally for marriage equality on Tuesday night at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Montclair at 67 Church Street.

Ireland: Protest Held for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Ireland Marriage Equality RallyCampaign group LGBT Noise today gathered in Dublin to call on the Government to grant civil marriages to all in Ireland regardless of sexual orientation.

“Unlike in many other jurisdictions, civil partnership does not afford equal rights to same-sex couples. It has been audited by a team of legal experts and they have identified 169 rights which are available in marriage which are absolutely prohibited in civil partnership,” said Max Krzyzanowski, Noise organiser.

Decked out with hearts and rainbow colours, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights group drew a crowd outside Leinster House today promoting their annual March for Marriage, set to take place on August 12th. The group, along with students from Trinity and UCD LGBT societies, gave out Valentine’s Day-themed sweets and asked the Oireachtas to “have a heart” and grant marriage equality.

A decision that came as no surprise to any of the couples who applied.

“It’s kind of empowering to come and say ‘This is my right,’” said Torres, who has been dating Ervin for 25 years. “Education is ongoing and it’s a reminder that we aren’t going away.”

The couple, who have two children in their 30s, took part in a Valentine’s Day Protest and March for marriage equality, sponsored by the Family Marriage Equality Foundation. Tuesday’s march and protest was the tenth annual Valentine’s Day event for the group.

VA: Marriage Equality Rally on Valentine’s Day in Fairfax

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Fairfax, Virginia Marriage Equality Rally“This is a day of love, but for Virginia, it is not yet a day of celebration,” said Rev. Amanda Poppei, Washington Ethical Society, as she emerged from the Fairfax County Courthouse today and announced that a same-sex Fairfax couple had been denied a marriage license.

Supporters billed it as the largest rally ever held in Fairfax to support gay marriage, as about 200 clergy and laypersons gathered outside the courthouse. Moments earlier, Rev. Kaeren Rasmussen and Barb Brehm, longtime Fairfax residents who are both retired Navy veterans and have been domestic partners for 26 years, had entered the courthouse and requested a marriage license from the Clerk’s office. According to law, their request was denied.

“It’s very hard to be rejected. After 26 years together, you think they’d say, ‘What’s the question?’ ” Brehm said.
