Watch: The Anti-Gay Right’s Most Embarrassing Moments of 2011

As 2011 comes to a close, it is time yet again count down those special moments in which the religious right and other assorted members of the anti-gay industry made complete asses of themselves on video:

5. Brian Brown gets laughed at on Fox News

In 2011, a curious thing happened to the National Organization for Marriage. As the organization battled against marriage equality in several states — successfully in Maine and unsuccessfully in New York — NOM’s leaders seemed be slowly backing away from giving interviews and having debates on news programs.

Now it could be that they were shying away from the press so they didn’t have to answer ever growing questions about NOM’s finances. But one could also point out the simple fact that as NOM’s people gave more interviews and took part in more debates, their argument became less credible.

Gay Rights Groups Fight Back Against Religious Right

As religious activists prepare a conference this week in Irvine aimed at praying away homosexuality, gay rights activists are confronting the gathering on several fronts, saying its message doesn’t lead to understanding and instead fuels hate.

Unlike past decades, gay rights activists say they increasingly are fighting back against misperceptions that fly in the face of science and the U.S. Constitution.

It’s an extension of the gay civil rights movement, they said, which is confronting religious teachings that tend to marginalize members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

Canada: Rise of the Christian Right

From the moment I began this book, I was confronted by skeptics who insist that a truly influential religious right could never take root in Canada. For some, that denial seemed like an exercise in wishful thinking, a refusal to face the possibility that the idea of the country they cherish – liberal, tolerant, and not given to extremes of action or belief – might not be in sync with the changing reality.

Others argued that if a Christian right did exist here it would have burst fully formed on to the political scene, a carbon copy of that in the U.S. – raucous and confrontational, openly pulling the strings of the Conservative party and captained by outspoken television preachers with millions of viewers ready to respond to their bidding.

But the American movement has had more than three decades to take shape and flourish; by the time scholars and the mainstream media noticed, it had already infiltrated nearly every level of government from school boards to the Senate, often by stealth.
