UK Report: 45% Support Marriage Equality

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

UK Gay Marriage ReportMost people still oppose gay marriage and the adoption of children by same-sex couples, a Government report revealed yesterday.

More than half believe homosexual marriages should not be allowed and two thirds think the adoption of children by same-sex couples should not have become legal nine years ago.

The findings from the Office for National Statistics suggest the Coalition’s plans to upgrade civil partnership laws to let gay couples describe themselves as married may prove unpopular.

Australia: What the MP’s Said About Marriage Equality Proposal

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Australia Marriage EqualityIn November last year the federal parliament passed a motion from Greens MP Adam Bandt calling on members to take the pulse of constituents on gay marriage. This morning, a selection of MPs reported back. Prime Minister Julia Gillard and opposition leader Tony Abbott were not among them.

Bandt congratulated colleagues who chose to participate, calling it a “good day for those who believe in love”. Bandt’s electorate of Melbourne was overwhelmingly supportive of same-sex marriage, with only one out of 475 respondents to his survey opposed to equal marriage rights. Bandt called it a “top priority issue” for his seat of Melbourne, and that there was almost universal support for the Greens stance, expressing confidence that “we’ll achieve full equality in the life of this parliament”. Bandt also stated that the prime minister and leader of opposition were “out of step with mainstream public opinion”.

Crikey takes a look at their speeches of the nearly 30 MPs who reported to the parliament:

LGBT Equality Movement Outspent By Opponents

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

The LGBT movement is making progress, but it’s being seriously outspent by opponents and still has “a long way” to go to reach equality.

That’s the conclusion of an in-depth analysis released Wednesday by an independent think tank devoted to studying how best to marshal the LGBT movement’s resources to “speed advancement of equality for LGBT people.”

And it’s a hard-edged conclusion in a year which has seen many dramatic gains for the movement — repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, significant federal court rulings against the Defense of Marriage Act, and a swing in public opinion toward support for same-sex marriage.

Third Way Releases New Report on US Relationship Recognition for Gay, Lesbian Couples

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Fifteen years ago this month, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The bill, which defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman under federal law, passed by a vote of 342-67–an outcome that roughly reflected public opinion at the time.

But over the past decade and a half, our society has undergone a seismic shift in how it recognizes and accepts the relationships of gay and lesbian couples. This report provides a snapshot of this dramatic transformation and illustrates the crystallizing consensus in favor of legal relationship recognition for gay and lesbian couples, extending all the way to marriage in many parts of the country.

In 1996, DOMA was thought to have ended the debate on marriage. But it seems to have been only the beginning of a more profound shift in favor of gay and lesbian couples.

New Report: Support for Gays/Lesbians Increased in 27 Countries Since 1998

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

The vast majority of countries around the world have become more accepting of homosexuality, with the exception of Russia and other former socialist countries, a new study has found.

The report, compiled by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, examined general trends in over 30 countries regarding their attitudes towards homosexuality, and is based on five surveys conducted in different countries between 1988 and 2008.

Approval of homosexuality increased in 27 countries and decreased in only four: Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Latvia and Russia, the study noted. The growth in approval ratings was stronger than the decline.

Being Gay in Iran

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Gay IranThe Human Rights Watch has released a damning expose on the extreme homophobic violence in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The recent report, entitled We are a Buried Generation, reveals how laws against gays put them at risk of harassment, sexual abuse and even death.

The study – based on the testimonies of over 100 individuals – documents the extreme violence which gay men and lesbians endure as a result of anti-gay legislation.

It notes that there is a “very real threat of prosecution” and “serious punishment [awaits] those convicted of same-sex crimes”.

DADT Study: Little Impact From Repeal

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't TellDefense Secretary Robert Gates told Pentagon reporters on Tuesday that existing policies such as housing and spousal benefits for military service members “can and should be applied equally to homosexuals as well as heterosexuals.”

Gates says he does not expect the Pentagon would have to rethink those policies to accommodate gays if they are allowed to serve openly in the military.

He said a majority of concerns associated with repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” provision against gays serving openly could be addressed through increased training and education.

DADT Report To Be Released 1 Day Early

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

Don't Ask Don't Tell ReportSignaling the growing seriousness of the Obama administration’s commitment to ending the military’s ban on gays in the military this year, the Defense Department said Sunday that it will release a long-awaited report on how the military could end the ban earlier than planned in response to senators eager to vote on the matter.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has ordered the report to be released publicly on Nov. 30, one day earlier than planned, “to support Congress’ wish to consider repeal before they adjourn,” Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said Sunday evening.

The Senate is slated to vote again on a defense policy bill that includes language repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy after the Thanksgiving recess, after it failed to advance the bill in September. Several senators last week asked Gates to release the report early so the Senate Armed Services Committee could hold hearings on its findings before the full Senate votes. Several moderate senators have said they will not decide how to vote until they read the report.

Pentagon May Release DADT Study Early

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

The Department of Defense could expedite the release of its internal review of the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy on sexual preference, according to a source close to discussions of the review.

A Pentagon working group has been studying the potential effects of ending the policy. The final report is due on President Obama’s desk December 1. The Washington Post reported Thursday that, according to sources close to the review, it would conclude that ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell would carry minimal risk to servicemembers and U.S. war efforts. Both President Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates support ending the policy.

The review is expected to create political cover for lawmakers to do away with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. As Congress comes back for its lame-duck session next week, gay rights activists expect Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to bring Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell up for a vote before the session ends.

DADT Report: Minimal Risk to Lifting Ban on Gay Troops

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

A Pentagon study group has concluded that the military can lift the ban on gays serving openly in uniform with only minimal and isolated incidents of risk to the current war efforts, according to two people familiar with a draft of the report, which is due to President Obama on Dec. 1.

More than 70 percent of respondents to a survey sent to active-duty and reserve troops over the summer said the effect of repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy would be positive, mixed or nonexistent, said two sources familiar with the document.

The survey results led the report’s authors to conclude that objections to openly gay colleagues would drop once troops were able to live and serve alongside them.
