Marriage Equality Ireland to Release Report on Children of Gays, Lesbians

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

An Irish equality group is to launch the results of a report documenting the experience of children raised in Ireland by LGBT parents. In researching their report, entitled Voices of Children, Marriage Equality – a body working for equal marriage rights for lesbians and gay men in Ireland – conducted interviews with 12 participants, all of who were raised by lesbian parents.

The range of social and legal issues raised in the report will be discussed at a one-day conference being held as part of the launch.

The Irish Times reports that Voices of Children “reveals the closeness of such families, but also the anguish caused by legal loopholes that rob them of basic rights”.

US: Hate Crimes Against LGBT Community Increased in 2009

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) has issued their annual report on the number of reported violent crimes against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender people in 2009. While the findings are disturbing enough, keep in mind that such statistics are notoriously under-reported, with many law enforcement agencies not collecting, reporting, or recognizing anti-LGBT animus in violent crimes or including crimes in which perceived (not actual) sexual orientation or gender identity are factors.

NCAVP’s conclusions are still extremely worrying:

  • Murders at second-highest rate in a decade
  • Spike in anti-LGBTQ violence at time of federal hate crimes law passage
  • Economic crisis depletes resources for LGBTQ survivors of violence

Even more telling are how the crimes disproportionally effect communities of color and transgender women or feminine-presenting people in the LGBT community.

Mexico: Yearly Killings of Gays Doubled After 2001

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Killings of gays and lesbians have risen in Mexico despite a government tolerance campaign and a law legalizing same-sex marriage in the capital, according to a report released Thursday by a coalition of civic groups.

A review of more than 70 newspapers in 11 Mexican states found an average of nearly 30 killings a year motivated by homophobia between 1995 and 2000, compared to nearly 60 a year between 2001 and 2009, the report said.

Ricardo Bucio, president of the government’s National Council for the Prevention of Discrimination, backed the report, saying it gave visibility to a lingering problem. The government launched a radio campaign in 2005 to promote tolerance of homosexuals.

Cyprus: Government Will Take New Report on Gay Relationship Recognition “Seriously”

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

THE GOVERNMENT will take “seriously” the Ombudswoman’s latest report recommending legal reforms to allow same-sex partnerships, said Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Lazaros Savvides yesterday. “No decision has been taken. It is something we have to study a bit further. We have not closed the issue, it remains open,” he said.

Ombudswoman Iliana Nicolaou said in a report last week that the legal recognition of same-sex partnerships in Cyprus was imperative in today’s society. She argued the legal vacuum on same-sex partnerships constituted direct discrimination against EU citizens based on sexual orientation, while impacting on a range of issues including insurance, pension, tax and property.

She proposed legal reforms to eliminate current inequalities in the rights of same-sex partners who cohabit, noting that “this step would not endanger either the traditional concept of marriage or the traditional form of family”.

Equality California Releases Report on “Moving Marriage Forward”

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Our nation is engaged in a crucial conversation about why marriage matters. More than 100 million Americans now live in jurisdictions that provide the freedom to marry or some other measure of recognition for same-sex couples and their loved ones. That’s up from virtually zero just a decade ago. Public support for the freedom to marry continues to grow, with polls now consistently showing majority support among parts of the public and in several states, and near majority support nationwide.

Even though momentum is on the side of the freedom to marry, we know there is still much work to do. Only five states and the District of Columbia have ended exclusion from marriage. Losses at the ballot in California and Maine, however temporary, as well as the ongoing national debate, make it clear that many people are still wrestling with the idea of fairness for all families.

About 20 to 40 percent of people nationwide continue to waver in their position on marriage. These friends and neighbors – even family members – are good and fair people. They have deeply held beliefs, as well as some internal conflicts and real uncertainties, about gay people and marriage. Answering the sincere questions of this group of people – helping them push past discomfort and resolve their conflicts – is the key to meeting Freedom to Marry’s goal of securing majority support for marriage. How can we each personally and most effectively have the conversations that help more people rise to fairness?

New US State Department Report Documents LBGT Life Around the Globe

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

This year’s U.S. State Department “Country Reports on Human Rights Practices” looked at LGBT life in nearly every nation on the planet and did an excellent job of documenting anti-LGBT abuse across the globe, the Council for Global Equality said March 11. The council further applauded State for urging “the use of diplomacy to counter this trend” of anti-gay hostility.

Introducing the report, which covered 2009, Michael Posner, assistant secretary of state for democracy, human rights and labor, singled out the situation in Uganda, where a draconian anti-gay bill has resulted in a seriously deteriorating atmosphere for LGBT people.

Among much else, the bill punishes “aggravated homosexuality” and a second conviction for “the offense of homosexuality” with the death penalty.
