Now that gay people can wed in New York, Rep. William L. Owens wants the federal government to recognize the marriages, too.

He has signed on to a repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, a 1996 law that defines marriage on the federal level as between one man and one woman. The law can complicate gay couples’ Social Security checks and hospital visitations, for example, and its repeal is the next goal for gay rights activists.

“I indicated I would not become a co-sponsor until New York took action,” Mr. Owens, D-Plattsburgh, said Tuesday. “Once they did that, I felt I had an obligation to the citizens in the state to make sure they weren’t adversely impeded by federal law.”

MN: Lesbian Representative Urged No Vote on Marriage Equality Ban

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

Karen ClarkMinnesota Representative Karen Clark, one of two openly gay lawmakers serving in the Minnesota House, on Saturday pleaded with lawmakers considering a gay marriage ban to let her marry in Minnesota.

After roughly five hours of often emotional debate, House members voted 70 to 62 in favor of Republican Representative Steve Gottwalt’s amendment, which seeks to define marriage as a heterosexual union in the Minnesota Constitution, sending it to voters for their approval during next year’s general election. Minnesota currently bans such unions by law, but supporters say it remains vulnerable to legal challenges without the amendment.

Four Republicans – Tim Kelly, John Kriesel, Rich Murray and Steve Smith – joined all but two Democrats – Denise Dittrich and Lyle Koenen – in voting against the measure.

UT: GOP Representative Would Ban Gays & Lesbians from Public Programs

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

A Utah legislator introduced a bill Wednesday that would require all publicly funded programs, laws, and regulations, to ensure they exclude families headed by gay and lesbian couples.

Rep. LaVar Christensen writes in the bill’s language that “marriage and family predate all governments and are supported by and consistent with the Laws of Nature and God, the Creator and Supreme Judge of the World, affirmed in the nation’s founding Declaration of Independence.”

It also says, “families anchored by both a father and a mother, fidelity within marriage, and enduring devotion to the covenants and responsibilities of marriage are the desired norm.”

DC: Would GOP Win Put Anti Gay Mormon Republican in Position to Overturn Gay Marriage?

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

The Washington City Paper‘s new “The Sexist” blogger, Dave Weigel, has a profile out on Jason Chaffetz, the “proto-Tea Party” freshman Republican Congressman from Utah who is poised to head the Federal Workforce, Postal Service, and the District of Columbia Subcommittee of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

That’s actually sort of funny, because this guy doesn’t like DC! For example, part of his platform when he ran for office in 2008 was to work to keep the District from getting a vote in Congress. Oh, and he wants to stick DC into Maryland and overturn the legalization of gay marriage.

For people who don’t think a national legislature ought to be mucking around in the nitty-gritty of local government, Chaffetz actually has a fix. It just that his solution doesn’t happen to lie along the D.C. statehood/legal autonomy: In Chaffetz’s idea, most of what we now call Washington, D.C., could become Washington, Maryland.
