NY: To Get 4 Republican Votes on Marriage Equality, It Took 29 Democrats

Friday, July 8th, 2011

I’ve been reading a lot of articles about how the marriage campaign succeeded in New York. Two of the best were the recap by Michael Barbaro in the New York Times and Paul Schindler’s interview with Governor Cuomo.

A lot of focus is on the four GOP Senators who finally voted yes. But, the victory probably wouldn’t have happened if the Democratic caucus didn’t deliver 29 of its 30 votes.

In December of 2009, the vote was 24 – 38 against the marriage bill. During the 2010 cycle, two anti-marriage Democrats, Hiram Monserrate from Queens and William Stachowski from Buffalo, lost their seats to pro-marriage Dems, thanks, in part to the work of Fight Back NY.

NY Post: Seven Senate Republicans Ready to Vote for Marriage Equality

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Seven or more Senate Republicans have signaled Gov. Cuomo that they’re ready to legalize same-sex marriage, more than enough to put the controversial and historic measure over the top this week, The Post has learned. A highly knowledgeable Senate insider said yesterday that “far more of the [GOP] members are in play than anyone realizes, including some surprising names from conservative upstate areas.”

Among the unexpected potential Senate Republican “yes” votes, insiders say, are Kemp Hannon of Nassau County, Charles Fuscillo of Suffolk County, Betty Little of Glens Falls, Andrew Lanza of Staten Island, Greg Ball of Putnam County, James Alesi of Rochester, and Roy McDonald of Rensselaer County — all of whom helped defeat gay marriage when the vote was held in December 2009.

Influences contributing to the changes of heart are secret Republican polls showing majority support for gay marriage in key swing districts and the strong possibility that the GOP could lose control of the Senate next year to Democrats campaigning on the issue, sources said.

NY: Assemblyman Daniel O’Donnell Courting Republican Votes for Marriage Equality

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Daniel O'DonnellNew York state assemblymember Daniel O’Donnell, who introduced a marriage equality bill last week, said he expects more Republican support this year than when his chamber last voted on the measure in 2009.

“I expect more Republican support than we had last year,” said O’Donnell, in a reference to 2009, when the bill passed twice, including an 89-52 vote in May with support from five Republicans. Democrats maintain control of the assembly, but their leadership margin thinned somewhat in the November elections.

“We don’t have 89 committed ‘yes’ votes in our chamber, that is true,” said the gay Democrat from Manhattan, who added that he keeps an updated “color-coded chart” on the vote count. “But we certainly have more than we need to pass it and we still have a number of ‘maybes’ out there.”

Senator Graham Says DADT Will Not Be Repealed, Calls for More Study

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Senator Lindsey GrahamSenator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) predicted on Sunday that the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy would not be repealed during the remaining weeks Congress is in session this calendar year.

The South Carolina Republican, a proponent of the law banning openly gay service in the armed forces, said definitively that there was no support for repeal on the Republican side of the aisle. He called for an additional study to determine whether the military itself favored overturning the 17-year-old legislation.

“This is a political promise made by Senator Obama when he was running for president,” said Graham, during an appearance on Fox News Sunday. “There is no groundswell of opposition to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell coming from our military. This is all politics.”

NC: After Budget, GOP to Go After Gay Marriage, Leader Says

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

The state’s ailing budget will take precedent, but Republicans will have time to tackle other issues, including gay marriage, abortion and illegal immigration, when the new legislative session begins, said newly elected Speaker Pro Tem Dale Folwell, R-Forsyth.

Folwell, who won his fourth term in the November election, was voted Nov. 20 into what is basically the No. 2 spot in the House leadership hierarchy. As speaker pro tem, he’ll get to hold the gavel from time to time, overseeing formal sessions in the House of Representatives when new Speaker Thom Tillis, R-Mecklenberg, is out of the room.

He’ll also help push the new majority’s agenda when the session starts Jan. 26, and make sure the largest freshman class in North Carolina House history – a product of the historic Republican takeover earlier this month – knows what it’s doing. With his number-crunching skills – Folwell is an accountant by trade – it’s a good bet he’ll be heavily involved as the GOP looks for cuts to help balance a $3 billion-plus hole in next year’s state budget.

IA: GOP Promises Focus on Jobs, Not Social Issues

Friday, November 26th, 2010

Iowa Gay MarriageIowa Republicans say state spending and jobs will take precedence over social issues such as gay marriage at the upcoming legislative session.

Although many Republicans have been strongly opposed to the legalization of gay marriage in Iowa, House Speaker-elect Kraig Paulsen says he thinks voters are most concerned about reducing the size of government and creating jobs.

Tim Albrecht, a spokesman for Gov-elect Terry Branstad agrees, saying the Republican stressed jobs in his campaign because that’s what people care about most.

DADT Repeal Has Four Possible GOP Votes in Senate

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Via Greg Sargent, news that passing the DADT language is possible, but it will take some commitment from the Majority Leader: It’s widely assumed that the White House and Dems will punt on holding a vote on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell during the lame duck session because there aren’t 60 votes for it in the Senate to get it past a GOP filibuster.

Senator Carl Levin, who heads the relevant committee, is talking about separating out DADT repeal from the Defense Authorization Bill for precisely this reason.

But very plugged in staffers who are actively involved in counting votes for Senators who favor repeal tell me it’s premature to conclude this — and that it could still get 60 votes in the Senate. These staffers tell me they’ve received private indications from a handful of moderate GOP Senators that they could vote for cloture on a Defense Authorization Bill with DADT repeal in it — if Dem leaders agree to hold a sustained debate on DADT on the Senate floor.

IA: Republicans Push Democrats to Dump Pro-Gay Marriage Leader

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

Iowa Senate Leader Mike GronstalSocial conservatives in Iowa are urging Democrats to elect new leadership in the Senate to help get a question regarding gay marriage on the ballot, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal has reiterated his vow to block any effort to place an amendment that defines marriage as a heterosexual union in the Iowa Constitution. Such a move would overturn last year’s Iowa Supreme Court decision that brought gay marriage to the Midwest.

“I don’t think I’ve really wavered on that subject,” he said. “I’m not going to write discrimination into the constitution.”

LGBT Groups On Loss of House, Changes in Senate

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Republicans won control of the U.S. House in Tuesday’s elections. As of 3 a.m. Wednesday, it appeared the GOP will hold at least 234 seats, to Democrats’ 180. But Democrats retained a slim majority in the U.S. Senate – holding 51 seats, compared to the Republicans’ 47. At 3 a.m. Wednesday, Senate races in Washington State and Colorado were considered too close to call.

The LGBT community will be able to celebrate the addition of a fourth openly gay member to the House and the re-election of the three openly gay incumbents, but the loss of a Democratic majority in that chamber spells the end for hope that any of the dozen or so pro-gay measures pending in Congress have any chance of advancing in the next two years. The new Republican majority also increases the likelihood that measures hostile to LGBT civil rights issues can be publicized through hearings in committee that will, starting next January, be chaired by Republicans.

“Social justice movements always experience steps forward and steps back and this election turned out to be a mix of both,” Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese said in a statement reacting to the election results. “Even though we will face greater challenges in moving federal legislation forward, nothing will stop us from using every tool to advance LGBT equality at every level. Attempts to hold back the tide of the equality movement will surely put anti-LGBT leaders on the wrong side of history.”

Gold’s Gym CEO Gives Millions to GOP

Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Gold's GymChange.org points out that Robert Rowling, the Owner, Chief Executive Officer and President of TRT Holdings which runs Gold’s Gym, made a sizable donation to American Crossroads, the pro-Republication organization founded by Karl Rove.

As Politico puts it, the group intends to spend “$65 million to oust the Democratic majorities in Congress.” Like most of those who donated the majority of American Crossroads’s funding, Rowling is a billionaire and reportedly gave them $2 million through both his corporate and personal accounts.

Change.org explains how that money (and your Gold’s membership) is impacting political issues surrounding the LGBT community:

Among the candidates that the owner of Gold’s Gym is working to elect include Nevada GOP senate candidate Sharron Angle, who is challenging Sen. Harry Reid. Angle, you might recall, has previously said that women who are raped should turn their lemons into lemonade, and that LGBT people should be barred from adopting children.
