NH: Rick Perry Backs Marriage Equality Repeal

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

New Hampshire Gay Marriage RepealPresidential candidate Rick Perry praised the legislators working to overturn New Hampshire’s same-sex marriage law last night in Manchester.

“As conservatives we believe in the sanctity of life. We believe in the sanctity of traditional marriage,” Perry said. “And I applaud those legislators in New Hampshire who are working to defend marriage as an institution between one man and one woman, realizing that children need to be raised in a loving home by a mother and a father.”

As he spoke at the annual banquet for Cornerstone Action, a conservative advocacy group, Perry sought to set himself apart from others in the field as a candidate with an unwavering pro-life background.

Rick Perry Signs NOM Pledge, Thinks Gays Are Like Alcoholics

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Fresh off a Denver fundraiser, Texas governor Rick Perry today became the fourth GOP candidate to sign the National Organization for Marriage’s anti marriage equality pledge. Thursday night Perry hosted a fundraiser in suburban Denver. Admission was said to be $5,000 a pop.

Of course, Perry’s position on marriage equality is nothing new. In a 2008 book, he wrote:

Even if an alcoholic is powerless over alcohol once it enters his body, he still makes a choice to drink. And, even if someone is attracted to a person of the same sex, he or she still makes a choice to engage in sexual activity with someone of the same gender.

Even before Perry signed the pledge to support a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, Brad Clark, executive director of One Colorado, had this to say about Perry’s book, via email:

Rick Perry Flip Flop: Now He Wants a Federal Constitutional Ban on Marriage Equality

Saturday, July 30th, 2011

Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Saturday he supports a federal limit on gay marriage and thinks a creator put life on Earth.

The Republican governor is considering a GOP presidential bid and preparing for his first political stop ahead of the key early primary in South Carolina, where social issues always play well. But Perry told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that a presidential campaign would concentrate on jobs, not evolution or gay marriage.

“The issue that is most important and most on people’s minds is jobs,” Perry said.

Rick Perry: Marriage Equality a States’ Rights Issue

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Rick PerryTexas Gov. Rick Perry, a potential Republican presidential candidate, said Friday he supports state rights so much that he’s fine with New York’s approval of gay marriage but still called himself an “unapologetic social conservative.”

Perry, who has been weighing a presidential run, said he opposes gay marriage – but that he’s also a firm believer of the 10th Amendment.

“Our friends in New York six weeks ago passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex. And you know what? That’s New York, and that’s their business, and that’s fine with me,” he said to applause from several hundred GOP donors in Aspen, Colo. “That is their call. If you believe in the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business.”
