With Mr. Frothy Out of the Mix, Will Amendment One Fail?

As most of you have heard by now, Rick “Google Me” Santorum has “suspended” his presidential campaign after yet another disappointing round of primaries. Give the man some credit for finally realizing what we all knew from the get go, that he never had a snowball’s chance in hell.

America is tired of extremism. In an era where even Liberals aren’t liberal any more and the mainstream GOP refusing to use Marriage Equality as a wedge issue, are we beginning to see a hint of a glimmer of rationality in politics?

The Raleigh News and Observer reported Wednesday that Santorum’s exit from the presidential race could mean trouble for the anti-gay Amendment One, which would cement bigotry into the NC constitution.

Michael Bitzer, a political expert at Catawba College in Salisbury, said North Carolina voters can still make a statement when early voting for the May 8 primary begins on April 19. Santorum and Gingrich – as well as Ron Paul – will appear on the ballot and may draw a protest vote.

The question is how bad Romney limps into the Tampa convention with the base of the Republican Party still not behind him,” Bitzer said.

At the state level, Santorum’s departure may also influence voter turnout in other campaigns. The former Pennsylvania senator’s social conservative voters would have boosted support for a constitutional ban on same-sex marriages and civil unions. Likewise, other far-right conservative candidates could have drawn more votes.

“Without a driving factor of a presidential race at the top of the ticket, will (social conservatives) have a motivation to come out?” Bitzer asked.

What Bitzer fails to take into account is that exit polling and public opinion research throughout the GOP primary season has consistently shown two things. First, that Republicans, in general aren’t thrilled with any of the choices they’ve been presented with this year. Voter turnout at the GOP primaries has been at record lows. Romney is too bland and he’s got that whole Mormon thing scaring the hell out of the evangelicals and other extremists.

Second, that the other contenders, including the two that are left, are far too extreme, even for extremists and aren’t electable. There is speculation that the Gingrich and Ron Paul campaigns might see a slight boost via protest votes from the folks who find Romney and his magic underwear just too icky, but not enough to make a significant difference. There is also the possibility that disillusioned GOP voters may just stay home.

When you take into account the rapidly declining support for Amendment One (60% are now opposed), plus Democratic Governor Bev Perdue’s announcement earlier this year that she will not be seeking re-election, voter turnout among Democrats will be greater than NC Republicans anticipated when they approved the referendum back in September. Factor in the disaffected Republican base and the likelihood of passage seems less than it did just a few weeks ago.

While the defeat of Amendment One is far from guaranteed, it’s safe to say that the tide has shifted in the Tarheel state and now is the time to keep the momentum going and fight harder than ever. Check out Protect All NC Families to see what you can do to help defeat Amendment One. Santorum Losing Catholic Vote Over Abortion, Marriage Equality Stands?

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Rick Santorum, a Roman Catholic, has not fared well with Catholic voters, exit polls from states that have held nominating contests show.

According to several analysts, Santorum’s opposition to birth control and gay marriage could be alienating Catholic voters.

“It’s not easy to describe the typical Catholic anymore,” Thomas Reese, director of the Woodstock Theological Center, a Jesuit research institute affiliated with Georgetown University, told Reuters. “We’ve always traditionally been the big tent that included people of all stripes.”

Santorum: All Marriages Between Gay and Lesbian Couples Should be Nullified

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

Rick Santorum to Nullify Gay MarriagesThere are 18,000 married gay and lesbian couples in California and at least 131,000 nationwide according to the 2010 census, conducted before New York state legalized same-sex marriage in July. Rick Santorum says he’ll try to unmarry all of them if he’s elected president.

Once the U.S. Constitution is amended to prohibit same-gender marriages, “their marriage would be invalid,” the former Pennsylvania senator said Dec. 30 in an NBC News interview.

“We can’t have 50 different marriage laws in this country,” he said. “You have to have one marriage law.”

Rick Santorum Opposes Civil Unions, Too

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum, a vocal opponent of gay marriage, said today he opposes civil unions, too.

In response to a question by Dean Reynolds for the “CBS Evening News,” the former Pennsylvania senator said same-sex couples should work through the legal system to obtain rights similar to those enjoyed by legally married couples.

“I believe in people’s right to be able to contract for whatever benefits that they have,” Santorum told Reynolds.

WA: Santorum to Meet With Marriage Equality Foes as Bill is Signed

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Rick Santorum and Washington State Marriage EqualityRick Santorum is scheduled to meet with gay marriage foes in Washington state on Monday, the same day Governor Chris Gregoire is holding a signing ceremony for a bill legalizing gay marriage in the state, The Seattle Times reported.

Gregoire will sign the bill into law at 11:30AM, making Washington the seventh state to legalize gay marriage.

The Democrat-controlled House approved the measure with a 55-43 vote on Wednesday, a day after a federal court declared California’s gay marriage ban, Proposition 8, in violation of the United States Constitution, and one week after the Washington Senate passed the measure with a wider margin than expected.

Santorum Tells Gay Man He Doesn’t Deserve Marriage

Saturday, February 4th, 2012

Rick Santorum told a gay man in Fulton, Missouri Friday afternoon that he didn’t deserve the “privilege” of marriage because his same-sex relationship does not “benefit” society in the same way that opposite-sex marriage does. Marriage, Santorum explained is an “intrinsic good” in which gay and lesbian people should not be allowed to partake in:

SANTORUM: You’re not entitled “to special treatment under the law…[Marriage is] not a right, it’s something that has existed since the beginning of human history as an institution where men and women come together for the purposes of forming a natural relationship as God made it to be. And for the purposes of having children and continuing that civilization.

Santorum Calls Outlawing Marriage Equality “God’s Will”

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Rick Santorum really earned the meaning of his name last night with Piers Morgan. During the CNN interview, sanctimonious Santorum declared that marriage rights for same-sex couples goes against his god’s will, and therefore he will work to outlaw it. Details follow.

“Marriage is an institution that existed before governments existed,” Santorum told Morgan. “It’s something that reflects nature and reflects God and God’s will for us. And both from the standpoint of faith and reason it makes all the sense in the world. And it’s beneficial for society. … Marriage has been voted on 32 times in this country in 32 states, from Maine to California and 32 times the people of this country have said that marriage is between a man and a woman and the public should have a say about this.”

Though I’m absolutely sure that Santorum gets his information of “god’s will” (and fashion advice, obviously) directly from his weekly phone calls with Jeebus, lets go out on a limb and pretend that the d-bag is merely going by that one pesky Leviticus passage declaring homosexuality an abomination. So, if that is the case, what other decrees of god’s will by way of Leviticus can we expect this Christian soldier to fight for?

Marriage Equality Foes Choose Santorum to Stop Romney

Sunday, January 15th, 2012

Rick Santorum has long drawn the special loathing of supporters of marriage equality for his fierce opposition to the measure, but until recently, he hadn’t had much luck benefitting from the flip side of that: The united support of marriage foes.

Since his Iowa victory, however, he’s begun finally to unite the wing of the Republican Party for whom marriage is a central issue. Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer endorsed Santorum last week, a group of leading social conservatives backed him today, and he just announced the endorsement of one of the highest-profile figures in the marriage wars, Maggie Gallagher, who until recently chaired the National Association for Marriage, the best funded group on its side.

Even Bill O’Reilly Thinks Santorum’s Anti Marriage Equality Plans Are Extreme

Friday, January 6th, 2012

Rick Santorum entered Bill O’Reilly’s ‘no spin zone’ last night and was questioned about how he’s going to respond to people who believe his views on social issues like abortion, gays in the military, and same-sex marriage, are extreme.

Santorum doesn’t believe his views are extreme: “I don’t think being for marriage between man and a woman is extreme, Bill.”

Says O’Reilly: “To rescind licenses already given? That’s a big deal.”

Santorum Would Change US Tax Code to Favor “Traditional” Marriage Even More

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

Rick Santorum’s socially conservative brand has helped him break through with a last-minute surge in Iowa. But his agenda isn’t restricted to reimposing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” outlawing gay marriage nationwide, or promoting prayer in public schools. Santorum also wants to use the federal tax incentives to promote traditional marriage and families.

(Associated Press – Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum. )
“Tax policy as social policy” is the most distinguishing characteristic of Santorum’s tax reform platform. The Pennsylvania Republican wants to reduce taxes by tripling the child tax credit, which currently stands at $1,000 per child.

Santorum also wants to reduce federal taxes that penalize married couples. Under the current tax code, some spouses who earn about the same salary on the middle-to-upper end of the spectrum pay more in taxes by filing jointly as a married couple than they would as individuals. Justin Wolfers explains further: “The U.S. has a household-based taxation system which subsidizes married families when one person stays home and taxes most people extra if they choose to marry and both work full-time. The average tax cost of marriage for a dual-income couple is $1,500 annually.”
