As President, Santorum Would Invalidate All Existing Same Sex Marriages

Monday, January 2nd, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum once again touted his support for a federal ban on gay marriage, saying on Saturday that any now-legal same-sex marriages would be invalid under a constitutional amendment.

In an interview with NBC’s Chuck Todd at his campaign headquarters in Iowa, Santorum said there needs to be one marriage law for all 50 states. When asked if he would make same-sex couples get divorced, he responded, “Well their marriage would be invalid. If the constitution says ‘marriage is this,’ then people whose marriages are not consistent with the constitution … (shrug.) I’d love to think that there was another way of doing it.”

Santorum said he has hesitations about the Supreme Court taking the decision about marriage away from the people. “32 times marriage has been voted on, in 32 different states from Maine to California, and 32 times marriage has won,” he said. But later in the interview Santorum acknowledged that “just because public opinion says something, doesn’t mean something’s right if it’s not right.”

IA: Did Vander Plaats Sell Family Leader Endorsement to Rick Santorum?

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

Iowa Family Leader Endorses Rick SantorumBob Vander Plaats’ endorsement of Rick Santorum has produced a backlash among conservatives in Iowa, some of whom are accusing the FAMiLY LEADER president of engaging in “pay for play” schemes and selling his coveted support to the highest bidder. Earlier this week, Santorum admitted that Vander Plaats approached the campaign with an indirect solicitation of money to help promote his support, but now other sources familiar with the talks between Vander Plaats and GOP candidates are characterizing the tactics as “corrupt.”

“Clearly the endorsement was for sale — without a doubt,” one source told ABC News’ Shushannah Walshe and Michael Falcone, stressing that Vander Plaats had tried to receive money for his support in past election cycles:

Though Santorum did not specify the dollar amount he and Vander Plaats discussed, multiple sources said he was soliciting as much as $1 million from Santorum and other candidates.

Santorum: Gay People “Have Rights of Every Other Citizen”

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Rick Santorum has said gay men and lesbians have equal rights. After receiving on Tuesday the personal endorsement of Bob Vander Plaats, president and CEO of The Family Leader, Santorum appeared on Fox News’ On The Record With Greta Van Susteren.

Vander Plaats is best known for leading last year’s successful campaign to oust three of the seven Iowa Supreme Court judges who overturned the state’s ban on gay marriage in 2009.

“Well, look, I have nothing against gay people,” Santorum responded. “They have rights of every other citizen. But what they did in Iowa and what some are trying to do, not all gays, but some are trying to do is change the laws of this country with respect to what the definition of marriage is.”

Santorum Gets Family Leader Endorsement

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Iowa Family Leader Endorses Rick SantorumThe FAMiLY Leader’s Bob Vander Plaats and Chuck Hurley of the Iowa Family Policy Center have endorsed conservative values stalwart Rick Santorum for president, who, despite a strong record of opposing abortion rights and marriage equality, has failed to gain any significant traction in the state.

Santorum is also the only GOP presidential candidate to campaign in all 99 of Iowa’s counties and has participated in over 350 town halls. The Leader’s board has agreed to remain neutral in the caucuses.

Vander Plaats and his group have sought to position themselves as kingmakers of the Iowa caucuses, hosting a presidential speakers forum earlier this year, and asking candidates to sign a 14-point marriage fidelity pledge vowing to oppose same-sex marriage.

Rick Santorum Blames Decline in Marriage Rates on Marriage Equality

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Rick Santorum indirectly sounded off on same-sex marriage yet again today, blaming the “changing definition” of the institution for plummeting rates of marriage across the nation.

On his Twitter account, the GOP candidate wrote: “Here is 1 effect of changing definition of marriage @HuffingtonPost: Marriage rate in America drops to new low”

Included in Santorum’s Tweet is a link to a HuffPost Weddings interview with D’Vera Cohn, a Pew researcher and senior writer who spoke at length about a new survey which found that the number of Americans who are getting married has hit a record low.

Santorum: Marriage Equality’s All Romney’s Fault

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Rick Santorum on Saturday told a crowd of conservative Republicans that he’s finished making apologies for his opposition to gay marriage and blamed former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney for its legalization.

Speaking in Des Moines, Iowa at the Presidential Preference Convention hosted by the National Federation of Republican Assemblies, Santorum said he was being targeted in the media for his socially conservative stances.

“If you look at the debates, every single moral, cultural question has come to me first. I was in a conversation with Mike Huckabee the other day. I said, ‘Mike, they’re trying to Huckabee me.’ They’re trying to paint [me] into that box that you’re the social conservative candidate and ask you all these social conservative questions.”

Bachmann, Santorum Re-Iterate Opposition to Marriage Equality

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum on Saturday night reiterated their opposition to allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry.

Bachmann and Santorum – along with Ron Paul, Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry – appeared at the nationally televised Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition’s eleventh annual Fall Banquet and Presidential Candidates Forum in Des Moines, Iowa.

The group, part of Ralph E. Reed Jr.’s Faith and Freedom Coalition, describes itself as “a 21st century version of the Christian Coalition.” Reed has said his coalition is designed to act as a bridge between the tea party movement and evangelical voters.

Students From Santorum’s Alma Mater Slam Him on Marriage Equality

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Rick Santorum was slammed by students at Penn State yesterday during a discussion on same- sex marriage. In this video (below), Santorum complains that CNN host Piers Morgan called him a “bigot,” for his stance on homosexuality and marriage equality.

Students were apparently not supportive of Santorum’s bigotry, as one raised his fist in the air supporting a fellow student’s attack on the former University of Pennsylvania graduate and former Pennsylvania Senator. Santorum also uses a bridge over a swamp analogy for same- sex marriage equality, and at one point falsely claims that second- graders are being taught about “gay sex.”

“Why don’t you find protection for gay marriage in the Equal Protection Clause and the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments?” Santorum is asked. (The 2:05 mark in the video.)

Santorum: No Marriage Equality Because a Tree is Not a Car

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Rick Santorum, who in recent weeks has compared marriage to a napkin, water, and beer, now says gays can’t be married because a tree is not a car, in a new interview with the Iowa Independent.

Burns: You’ve been pretty strong in your opposition to gay marriage. Iowa, of course, does have legalized gay marriage. How does the fact that there are a handful of gay couples married in Carroll affect my heterosexual life and your heterosexual life? How does it hurt other people in Carroll, Iowa, that there are folks among us we may not even know who happen to be gay and happen to be married? How does that hurt my life?

Santorum: Because it changes the definition of an intrinsic element of society in a way that minimizes what that bond means to society. Marriage is what marriage is. Marriage was around before government said what it was. It’s like going out and saying, ‘That tree is a car.’ Well, the tree’s not a car. A tree’s a tree.

Jon Stewart Takes On Rick Santorum’s Marriage Equality Metaphors

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Jon Stewart took on Rick Santorum for his growing list of strange similes for gay marriage.

Stewart noted that the Republican presidential candidate had taken a turn as a “motivational food court speaker” and said during a stop at an Iowa grocery store that calling the relationship of two men a marriage is like calling a napkin a paper towel.

“His point is well taken,” Stewart said. “It’s the slippery slope argument. If people start using paper towels as napkins, what’s next? Sleeves, drapes, mouth-on-dog wiping? Moral chaos!”
