All Potential RNC Chairmen Are Anti Gay Marriage (Surprise)

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

While many were offended by MSNBC’s Cenk Uygur’s laughter at GOProud Chairman Christopher Barron’s claim that the Republican Party is welcoming to gay people, today’s RNC Chair candidates’ debate provided a sobering contrast to the progress that people like Barron see.

Asked if they support the anti-gay National Organization for Marriage’s position on marriage, all five answered affirmatively, with varying degrees of lip service to the “individuality” and “dignity” of gay people, the classic “No offense, but you’re not equal.”

Interestingly, it was incumbent Michael Steele who treaded most lightly on the topic, saying he believed that marriage is between a man and a woman not to the exclusion of anybody.”

Candidates for RNC Chair Oppose Marriage Equality

Monday, December 27th, 2010

Some of the leading candidates vying to replace Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Michael Steele oppose gay marriage. The candidates discussed their views on the subject with National Organization for Marriage (NOM) Chairwoman Maggie Gallagher.

NOM is the nation’s most vociferous opponent of gay marriage. The group backed successful efforts to repeal gay marriage in California and Maine. Its next targets appear to be New Hampshire and Iowa, where Republican lawmakers increased their numbers on November 2.

Gallagher discussed the issue with several leading candidates, including Wisconsin GOP Chairman Reince Priebus, Save American Jobs Project Chairman Saul Anuzis, former RNC political director Gentry Collins and former Missouri Republican Chairwoman Ann Wagner.

Anti-Gay RNC Chair Ken Mehlman Comes Out

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

“After having had several homosexual experiences, many people still deny that they are gay. They tell themselves that they are really heterosexual, they continue to live as heterosexuals, and they maintain that their homosexual incidents or thoughts don’t and can’t mean anything,” Michelangelo Signorile wrote in his book, Outing Yourself.

Although he didn’t talk about his personal life or detail what his experience while in the closet had been, Ken Mehlman – the former head of the Republican National Committee who ran President Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign – came out as a gay man to The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder.

In a wide-ranging interview, Mehlman tells him, “I wish I was where I am today 20 years ago. The process of not being able to say who I am in public life was very difficult. No one else knew this except me. My family didn’t know. My friends didn’t know. Anyone who watched me knew I was a guy who was clearly uncomfortable with the topic.”
