For years, the City School District has granted benefits to partners of employees in domestic partnerships, allowing them to participate in health plans even when the state banned same-sex couples from marrying.
But now, with the passage of the law legalizing same-sex marriage in New York state, some of those partners will lose those health plans and other benefits.
After the Marriage Equality Act went into effect in July, the district decided to stop offering domestic partnership benefits at the end of the calendar year.

Supporters of marriage equality will be gathering in solidarity as we continue to wait for the much anticipated vote on the marriage equality bill. Light a candle at Washington Square Park (or First Universalist Church if it rains) and join with community as we come together in hope, faith and love.
This is NOT the BIG RALLY EVENT being planned for after the vote! Stay tuned for further updates as to the day and time of the organized response to senate action, or inaction, on the marriage bill.

The Rochester City Council today called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state Legislature to pass the Gender Identity Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) this year. The City Council, who are all Democrats, wrote a letter to Cuomo and Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County.
The Empire State Pride Agenda, in a news release, points out that Rochester is the historic home to Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony, and “has a long history of progressive leadership on civil rights issues.”
In fact, what the press release doesn’t point out is that Rochester in 1994 was the first city in the state to adopt regulations that extended equal benefits to domestic partners of city employees.
