NOM: Ron Paul Losing Because He Doesn’t Support Marriage Equality Ban

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Ron Paul is losing the GOP presidential nominating contest because he does not support a federal constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), has suggested.

In congratulating Mitt Romney for winning the Nevada caucuses on Saturday, Brown noted that the former Massachusetts governor has signed the group’s anti-gay marriage pledge and Paul has not.

“NOM congratulates Mitt Romney on another impressive victory in the Nevada caucuses, just days after his big win in Florida,” Brown said in a statement. “Governor Romney, who has signed NOM’s Marriage Pledge, has now won contests in three different regions of the country and has clearly established himself as the leading candidate.”

Ron Paul: Government Should “Butt Out” of Marriage

Sunday, November 27th, 2011

Texas Rep. Ron Paul says he believes the government should “butt out” of the marriage business.

During a wide-ranging interview conducted last week with the Des Moines Register’s editorial board, the GOP presidential candidate was asked: “What is the government’s role in same-sex marriage?”

“That’s my ideal — just butt out,” Paul answered. “I think a lot of the importance of marriage and I think a lot of the dictionary too. I know what the dictionary says marriage should be and is. But I didn’t vote for the marriage amendment. To me, it’s defining a word. If you want to define it one way and me another, that sounds like a first amendment issue. Why should I try to convince you of my definition? Or why do I want someone else to impose their ideas on me and make me accept their definition?

Ron Paul The Only Candidate to Oppose Marriage Equality Ban Amendment

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Texas Rep. Ron Paul was the only candidate at a Christian forum on Saturday opposed to amending the U.S. Constitution to define marriage as a heterosexual union.

Also appearing at the Thanksgiving Family Forum in Des Moines, Iowa were Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney was invited but did not attend. Also not in attendance was former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman, who has not placed an emphasis on Iowa.

The candidates gathered around a dinner table festooned with pumpkins as moderator Frank Luntz kept the conversation flowing for two hours as nearly 3,000 religious and socially conservative activists listened in.

Supposed Libertarian Ron Paul Supports DOMA

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Texas Congressman Ron Paul, speaking to a religious conservative group in Pella., Ia., today, cast the gay marriage issue as a states’ rights matter. He said he supports the federal Defense of Marriage Act, which specifies that states do not have to accept out-of-state marriages that don’t conform with their laws. “I see that as an act that was prohibiting the move to nationalize it and force Iowa to accept the rules of Massachusetts or whatever,” he said.

He said he also strongly supported Iowa voters’ right to oust Supreme Court justices.

However, he seemed confused when asked whether he supported the Iowa Supreme Court ruling that legalized gay marriage. He said at first that he didn’t read “that report” but agreed with every state’s right to legislate on marriage. Asked more specifically if he agreed with the ruling that legalized gay marriage, he started to repeat that it was the state’s right to legislate on the issue. An aide intervened to try to clarify the question.
