CA, USA: Soldier’s Partner Proposes to Him on Base

Friday, April 27th, 2012

That remarkable British ad for marriage equality in which a returning soldier arrives to a boyfriend who proposes marriage on the runway just happened for real in San Diego:

Luggage in tow, Guerrero emerged with a smile on his face. Upon seeing Huston, Guerrero dropped his bags; aimed a kiss toward Huston’s lips; and opened his arms to his boyfriend’s waiting embrace. The time and distance of 10 months’ separation evaporated in a public show of affection that less than a year ago would have been cause for court martial.

After a few minutes of emotional holding and kissing, Huston went anxiously down on one knee; looked up at Guerrero, who was dressed from head to toe in military fatigues; and produced an engagement ring and the time-honored phrase, “Will you marry me?”

CA: Marriage Equality Foe Buys San Diego Newspaper

Friday, November 18th, 2011

San Diego Newspaper SoldBeyond the court ruling on Prop 8, supporters of same-sex marriage got some more bad news this week. Less noticed than the court’s decision, but potentially worse for the cause of marriage equality was a business sale in San Diego.

That news? Doug Manchester bought the Union-Tribune newspaper. Manchester is best known as a hotelier and businessman in the San Diego area.

But he’s also one of the most aggressive and richest opponents of same-sex marriage.

Featured Gay Friendly Wedding Vendor: A Little to the Left Wedding Invitations, San Diego

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

Periodically we’ll feature one of our vendors here to let our readers know about some great people who can help you plan the perfect wedding.

Gay Friendly Wedding Vendors

A Little to the Left, San DiegoTasteful, subtle and elegant greeting cards for same-sex weddings, anniversaries and holidays.
I am the proud mother of a gay son who has been in a committed relationship for over 15 years. And for all those years I have been frustrated when looking for a greeting card for my son and son-in-law. Guess what? They didn’t exist.

Oh sure, I could find cards that were blank inside and had 2 turtles looking at each other on the front, or 2 giraffes, or whatever. And then there are always the ones with the cartoon images on the front, but I am not a “cutesy” kind of mom.

There are also the cards you can find on the web with more – um – suggestive images on the front as well. But then, I am not so much a “gutsy” kind of mom either.

So, I decided to start my own greeting card business called A Little To The Left. I call it that because my intent is that everything I do will be considered to be a “little to the left” of that which is considered to be “normal”.

My first line of cards is my Gay Friendly cards wherein I offer Wedding/Commitment Ceremony cards and Anniversary cards. As the year progressed, I offered Christmas cards, then Valentine’s Day cards and now I have Mother’s Day cards available to for the LGBT community as well as their friends and family. I will also offer Wedding Invitations and Thank You cards as customized orders.

CA: Prop 8 Protest in San Diego Leads to Arrests

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Nine people were arrested Thursday during a demonstration outside the county clerk’s office by a group demanding that same-sex marriages be allowed in the San Diego area, despite court and ballot-box setbacks that have put the issue in legal limbo.

Weddings between gay and lesbian couples in the state had been scheduled to become recognized by law again Wednesday evening. Two days earlier, however, an appeals-court decision put that prospect on hold for at least four months.

Nonetheless, several same-sex couples arrived at the bayfront San Diego County Administration Center first thing Thursday morning to demand marriage licenses as a constitutional right, and dozens of others gathered to rally in support.
