Scotland: Catholic Church Using Discredited Research to Fight Marriage Equality

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Scottish Catholic Church and Marriage EqualityThe Scottish Catholic Church has argued against equal marriage rights for same-sex couples, saying “exceptionally hazardous” gay relationships lead to shorter life expectancies, relying on a study which was discredited by its own authors for this purpose ten years ago and a paper authored by the founder of the Family Research Institute, which is designated a “hate group” in the US.

At an anti-gay marriage rally for Scotland for Marriage in November, Cardinal O’Brien, the leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland said: “At the heart of this debate [...] there is one perspective which seems to be completely lost or ignored, it is the point of view of the child.

“All children deserve to begin life with a mother and father, the evidence in favour of the stability and well being which this provides is overwhelming and unequivocal.”

Scottish Government May Make Deal With Churches on Marriage Equality

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

Scotland Marriage Equality CompromiseA COMPROMISE deal that would legalise gay marriage in Scotland but ban the ceremonies from being held in churches is being considered by the Scottish Government, Scotland on Sunday has learned.

Under the proposal, ministers would pass same-sex marriage legislation with the caveat that the ceremonies must be held in a civil setting.0 The same plans are under discussion in England and could be presented to religious opponents of gay marriage in Scotland as a guarantee that they would not be forced to conduct same-sex weddings.

The move would offer assurance to religious groups opposed to gay marriage that fear a legal challenge from equality campaigners if they refused to conduct same-sex ceremonies.

Speaking on a BBC Radio Scotland ‘Call Kaye’ discussion on Friday, the Reverend James Gracie, a minister of the Free Church of Scotland (Continuing), said being gay was a “lifestyle choice”.

He said: “If the homosexuals, and these people, want to be treated equally, then what about paedophiles? What about polygamy?”

Another guest, Tom French of the Equality Network, disagreed but Mr Gracie replied: “Even if you were to take that view, there are people who steal, people have tendencies for all sorts of things.”

Pro and Anti Marriage Equality Forces Rally at Scottish Parliament

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Scottish Marriage Equality RalliesSupporters of same-sex marriage have been met by a noisy counter-demonstration outside the Scottish Parliament. Members of the Humanist Society had gathered at Holyrood the day before a Scottish Government consultation on the issue closes. But they were at times drowned out by religious supporters of the institution of marriage.

Ross Wright, of the Humanist Society, addressed the demonstration which included people dressed in white wedding dresses.

He said: “Quite simply, marriage should be a free choice: free for all couples and free for the celebrant to choose whether they are happy to officiate. Marriage is important. Love does not discriminate and a concept of modern marriage for Scotland is the sensible and reasonable way forward.”

Scotland: Churches Call Government Marriage Assurances a Sham

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Scotland Gay MarriageReligious leaders fear government reassurances over plans to legalise gay marriage are a “complete sham”. Senior SNP figures appeared to indicate yesterday that ministers would press ahead with the measure, despite claims no decision would be taken while a consultation is under way.

The issue has caused arguments within the SNP, after some Christian members of the party demanded no organisation should be forced to be involved in gay marriage against its will. Former SNP leader Gordon Wilson is among the opponents.

A fringe event at the conference, attended by 150 people and hosted by MEP Alyn Smith, saw widespread support for the change.
