IA: Voters Discount Role of Marriage Equality in Iowa State Senate Race

Monday, November 7th, 2011

Iowa Gay Marriage RepealOnly 11 percent of voters see gay marriage as an important factor in the Iowa Senate contest between Liz Mathis and Cindy Golding.

A Public Policy Polling survey released Sunday shows Democrat Mathis ahead of her Republican rival 52 to 46 percent.

Pollsters also asked: “Is the gay marriage issue the most important factor influencing your vote or not?” Eleven percent said the issue was guiding their vote, while 86 percent said the issue had not influenced them.

IA: NOM Invades My Home Town

Friday, October 28th, 2011

Iowa Gay Marriage RepealThis is personal. Yesterday I learned from OneIowa that the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has arrived full force in my hometown of Marion, Iowa.

After leaving Iowa in 1981 and finally settling in California in 1994, imagine my surprise on April 3, 2009, when the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously upheld the District Court’s ruling holding that there was no important governmental interest in denying citizens marriage licenses based on their sexual orientation. Really? My home state beat California to the punch? I was shocked to say the least.

Fast forward to September 2011 and Swati Dandekar, a Marion Democrat resigned her Iowa Senate seat to take a post on the Iowa Utilities Board. Now there is a special election being held on November 8th which the Democrats must win to maintain their 26-24 majority in the Senate. With a Republican governor and the Iowa House having a 60-40 GOP majority this is a very important race.

IA: NOM Enters District 18 Race

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Iowa Gay Marriage RepealWe’ve been hearing a lot of predictions that outside groups would turn the Senate District 18 special election race into the latest battleground in the fight over gay marriage in Iowa.

Now, the first tangible evidence has landed in district mailboxes. Here’s a news release that arrived around midday:

National Organization for Marriage (NOM) Continues What it Started in 2010

NOM Launches Independent Expenditure Campaign in the 18th Senate District Race in Iowa

Des Moines, IA — The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) today announced it is launching an Independent Expenditure campaign along with The Family Leader in the 18th Senate District race to support Cindy Golding. Golding, a strong traditional marriage advocate, is running against Democrat Liz Mathis, a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage. NOM was a major player last year in the successful effort to remove three Supreme Court justices from office after they redefined marriage in Iowa.

Florida: Charlie Crist Plays Gay Marriage Ban Card

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Florida governor Charlie Crist, an independent candidate for U.S. Senate, appeared to voice support Sunday for a federal constitutional amendment to prohibit same-sex couples from marrying, then clarified his position to say it applied strictly to Florida.

According to the Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, Crist told CNN, “When it comes to marriage, I think it is a sacred institution, I believe it is between a man and a woman, but partners living together, you know, I don’t have a problem with it.”

The Victory Fund reports that Crist issued a clarification hours afterward to say that his comments only applied to the Florida constitution.

CA: Why is GOProud Going After the Gay Friendly Candidate?

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Tom Campbell, a former Republican congressman from California, decided late last year to drop his bid for Governor of the Golden State and instead join the race the GOP Senate primary in the bid to unseat Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer.

Early on, some feared that Campbell’s entry would split the socially moderate vote between Campbell and Carly Fiorina, the former head of Hewlett-Packard, leaving social conservative, State Senator Chuck Devore, as the winner. Instead, Devore is trailing in third, while Fiorina and Campbell duke it out.

GOProud is a little different. It tends to be in tune with the conservative movement and tackles the same issues that the wider movement deals with, such as taxes. So with that, GOProud has come out against supporting Tom Campbell. Why would a gay GOP not support a pol that supports gay marriage? Because he hasn’t signed a no-tax pledge. In a press release, they denounce Campbell by bringing up the ghost of Dede Scozzafava, the New York Republican who was forced from a congressional race by her far right opponent, Doug Hoffman.

CA: GOP Senate Candidate Who Supports Marriage Equality Tied for First Place in Poll

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

Among GOP voters Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tom Campbell, a former South Bay congressman, finds himself in a dead heat against his opponent Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard chief executive, according to the latest poll in the race.

Last week’s Public Policy Institute of California poll found that Campbell had 23 percent support among likely Republican voters, one point shy of Fiorina, who had 24 percent support. A third candidate in the race, conservative state Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, had 8 percent support.

His neck-and-neck tie with Fiorina is all the more remarkable considering Campbell supports marriage equality and was a vocal opponent against Proposition 8, the measure voters passed in 2008 that overturned the California Supreme Court ruling in favor of same-sex marriage. Should he be nominated by GOP voters in the June 8 primary, it would mark the first time that Republicans have backed a pro-same-sex marriage candidate who is truly competitive in a statewide race.
