British Soap Coronation Street to Have First Gay Wedding

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

Coronation Street Gay Wedding“Coronation Street” is to have its first gay wedding when Sean Tully ties the knot next spring. The storyline will see Sean (Antony Cotton) stunned when male midwife Marcus Dent – who walked out on the barman in 2008 because he couldn’t cope with his jealousy – returns to Weatherfield and offers to make the ultimate commitment to him.

An insider told The Sun newspaper: “Bringing back Charlie is seen as a big platform for him and in particular Antony. When Marcus turns up in Weatherfield in the spring he is desperate to rekindle his romance.

“But having hurt him once, Sean is apprehensive until Marcus offers him commitment, with the future storyline leading to Corrie;s first same sex marriage.”

Fans Rally Around Gay Couple on One Life to Live

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

IT IS sweet – and telling – how attached people get to TV characters, and how desperately they protest when their favorites are written off. But few campaigns are as passionate as the current one, from fans of the soap opera “One Life to Live,” to keep Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish on the show.

Like so many power couples, these two men are known by a nickname, “Kish.” And the fact that they recently made onscreen love in a bona fide soap-opera way, surrounded by burning candles and backed by a lite-pop score, represented a groundbreaking moment in daytime TV.

Groundbreaking, to a point: Within months of the sex scene, ABC announced that the Kish storyline was ending and the actors would be relieved of their regular roles. TV Guide reported that ratings had been dipping – a standard woe for soaps these days – and that the network thought the show didn’t “resonate with the mainstream audience.”

Gay Couple Dumped From One Life to Live

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

In January, things weren’t looking good for ABC’s ‘One Life to Live.’ It wasn’t just that ‘All My Children’ was getting the move to Los Angeles, leaving ‘OLTL’ the lone ABC soap in New York. It wasn’t just the delay in going to HD, nor the flagging ratings.

It was the stagnant story telling. The emphasis on gay marriage in Dorian’s mayoral campaign was over the top, as was the romance of closeted cop Oliver Fish and ex-lab tech Kyle. The Kyle-Fish relationship developed a fan base. The proponents of ‘Kish’ were all for the twosome become like Cam and Mitchell on ‘Modern Family,’ a gay married couple with broad-based appeal.

That’s not to be. This past week, ‘One Life to Live’ dumped the duo. Actors Brett Claywell and Scott Evans were let go because their characters are being written off the show, according to the New York Post. Despite the fact that the pair had an on screen wedding, which was the culmination of a well-developed romance, the show has continued to sink in the ratings. That’s not all the fault of Kish, but they haven’t helped.
