Monday, July 11th, 2011

That’s not a headline you are likely to read anywhere else in 2011. But in the case of access to equality, the fresh statistics for marriage in Spain show the country’s credit rating is very high indeed.

Rex Wockner reports that 18,634 same-sex marriages have been registered in Spain, while the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (FELGBT) believes that not all the marriages have been recorded, and that the actual number is 23,000.

Spain: 86% of Youth Aged 15-19 Support Marriage Equality

Monday, May 16th, 2011

Gay Marriage Poll in SpainA super majority (77%) of Spanish teens support gay marriage.

Spain legalized marriage between members of the same sex in 2005 over the loud objections of the Catholic Church. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who is running for a third consecutive term in early 2012, has said he’s proud of the legislation. At a recent public mass, the church urged Spaniards to embrace conservative candidate Mariano Rajoy, who has pledged to “change” the law.

Eighty-six percent of those surveyed between the ages of 15 and 19 said they believe it’s OK to talk about sexual minorities, and a large majority accept gay relationships, although with slightly greater acceptance of lesbian couples (84%) over male gay couples (81%). A large majority (74%) also accept transgender adults and 54% say they have gay friends.

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Mariano RajoyMariano Rajoy, the president of Spain’s conservative Partido Popular (PP), has stiffened his stand against the nation’s gay marriage law. Rajoy is vying to become the nation’s next prime minister in a contest to be held in early 2012.

Last month, he backtracked a bit from comments he made in a November interview with daily El Pais, in which he said he believed the nation’s 5-year-old gay marriage law is unconstitutional and that he wouldn’t keep the law even if a court decided it was constitutional.

But in a recent interview broadcast on Radio Nacional de Espana (RNE) radio, Rajoy backtracked, saying he would “change” the gay marriage law.

Spain: Pope Blesses Large Anti-Gay Mass in Madrid

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Anti Gay Marriage Mass in MadridPope Benedict XVI blessed an anti-gay marriage mass held Sunday in Madrid, Spain, Clarin.com reported. Tens of thousands of people lined the city’s downtown Plaza de Colon square to celebrate the mass conducted by Cardinal Atonio Ruoco Varela, the archbishop of Madrid.

Ruoco Varela attacked the reforms of the socialist government, which include gay marriage, fast-track divorce and easier access to abortions. He talked about the truth of marriage, a veiled reference to the country’s 5 year old gay marriage law.

“Anytime you deny the truth of marriage and family, in theory or practice, the negative consequences will come forward rapidly,” he said.

Spain: Opposition Leader Softens Stand on Gay Marriage

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

Mariano RajoyMariano Rajoy, the president of Spain’s Partido Popular, has softened his stand against gay marriage. In a November interview with daily El Pais, Rajoy, who is vying to become the nation’s next prime minister in a contest to be held in early 2012, said he believes the nation’s 5-year-old gay marriage law is unconstitutional. His conservative party has filed a constitutional challenge to the law.

“I will listen very carefully to the arguments of the Constitutional Court and the people, but I do not like the homosexual marriage act, and I do not think it is constitutional,” he said. “My disagreement is about the use of the word marriage.”

Rajoy wouldn’t commit to keeping the law even if the court upheld its constitutionality.

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Benedict XVI rode down the streets in his bullet-proof glass-encased “popemobile,” some 200 gay rights activists protested by kissing for five minutes.

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Pope BenedictGays in Spain plan kissing protest for Pope Benedict XVI when he visits Barcelona 07/10/2010.  A gay group is organising a kissing protest to greet Pope Benedict XVI’s when he visits Barcelona this weekend. Gay rights activists say they are planning a homosexual kissing protest in front of Pope Benedict XVI when he visits Spain this weekend.

Organisers plan for same-sex couples to gather and kiss in a so-called flashmob protest when the Pope arrives to consecrate the Spanish city’s Sagrada Familia church and celebrate mass on November 7.

“We are hoping for a crowd of people of the same sex who will kiss each other for two minutes in front of the pope,” one of the organisers, Marylene Carole, said on Monday. “After two minutes, the flashmob will finish and each participant will leave as if nothing happened,” she said.
