IA: State Senator’s Resignation Could Flip Senate to GOP, Allow Marriage Equality Repeal Passage

Friday, September 16th, 2011

Iowa Gay Marriage Repeal

With news that Iowa Senator Swati Dandekar is set to resign to take up a governor-appointed position on the Iowa Utilities Board and the possibility of a special election looming, marriage equality advocates are concerned there is potential for Republicans to chip away at the slim Democratic majority in Iowa’s upper chamber and pass a constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters, would ban same-sex marriage.

Dandekar represents the highly competitive Senate District 18 where registration data shows that Republicans narrowly outnumber Democrats 15,945 to 15,752. The district is also represented by two Republican Representatives.

Republicans are quietly confident that they could flip control in the Senate regardless of this, but their chances of securing Dandekar’s seat could be bolstered by the active campaigns of Republican presidential hopefuls. Moreover, the Democratic party reportedly has no immediate candidate for the seat. As such, they’ve already issued a call for help.

IA: State Senator Goes From Marriage Equality Opponent to Avid Supporter

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

Jeff AngeloFormer Iowa state Senator Jeff Angelo, who once backed a gay marriage ban amendment, will helm a new group for conservatives who support gay marriage.

Angelo is expected to unveil his new group Republicans for Freedom next week, the Des Moines Register reported.

“This debate centers around the devaluation of the lives of a select group of people,” Angelo told lawmakers at a public hearing earlier this year. “At its worst, we are being asked to believe that our gay friends are involved in a nefarious agenda. The outcome of which, supposedly, is the unraveling of society itself.”

IA: GOP Senator Makes Big Fuss About Gays and Camping

Friday, May 7th, 2010

A state senator who opposes gay marriage is asking questions about plans to change a camping rule in the state park system. Just over a year ago the Iowa Supreme Court issued a ruling which legalized gay marriage in Iowa.

Senator Merlin Bartz, a Republican from Grafton, says it appears to him that the Department of Natural Resources wants to make gay couples eligible for family camping at state parks. “They’re citing the Supreme Court case and changing, you know, ‘husband and wife’ language to ‘spouse,’” Bartz says.

The rates or fees for camp sites are the same, whether you’re a family or a non-family, but the state allows families to put up more than one tent on a camp site. “They’re changing their language even though the state legislature has not had a debate on this particular issue,” Bartz says.

CA: State Senator Ashburn Offically Comes Out

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

In the end, Sen. Roy Ashburn said he decided he owed his constituents an explanation. He went on a radio show first thing Monday morning to talk about his sexual orientation. Then the Bakersfield Republican returned to the state Senate floor, where colleagues greeted him with handshakes and hugs.

“I’m gay. Those are the words that have been so difficult for me for so long,” Ashburn, 55, told KERN conservative radio host Inga Barks.

Ashburn, who has voted consistently against gay-rights measures, last week refused to address reports that he was at a gay bar in Sacramento before his 2 a.m. arrest Wednesday for driving under the influence.

CA: Anti Gay Republican State Senator Ashburn Caught Leaving Gay Bar

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

The sexual orientation and voting record of state Sen. Roy Ashburn exploded into national news Thursday, the day after he was arrested on misdemeanor drunk driving charges in Sacramento. Ashburn, R-Bakersfield, did not return calls again Thursday seeking an explanation of the events leading up to his arrest and the Sacramento television report that launched nationwide speculation that the veteran lawmaker is gay and therefore a hypocrite for voting against gay-rights bills.

Ashburn has taken a personal leave from the Senate for an unknown length of time, his spokesman said. The Californian has asked Ashburn about his sexual orientation in the past. He has either questioned the relevance of the issue or dodged it altogether. The newspaper did not report the comments at the time, also deciding it was not relevant.

That all changed Thursday after Sacramento television station CBS13 quoted unnamed sources as saying Ashburn was arrested after leaving Faces, a gay nightclub in midtown Sacramento. Like a fast-moving wildfire, other television stations and bloggers nationwide including the Huffington Post and FoxNews.com reported the same, many citing CBS13′s story.
