UK: Stonewall to Fund 1,000 Marriage Equality Bus Ads

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Gay Bus Ads in LondonGay rights charity Stonewall has announced a thousand London buses will carry its equality message in April during the government’s consultation on how to implement marriage for gay couples.

During this month, public transport in the capital will display the ‘Some People Are Gay. Get Over It!’ adverts with a link to Stonewall’s equal marriage campaign website.

The charity is asking Londoners and visitors to the capital to tweet pictures of the buses using the hashtag #equalmarriage, so its message is not confined to the city.

UK: Stonewall Publishes Blueprint for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Marriage Equality and the UKGay rights charity Stonewall has published a draft marriage bill which it says contains the provisions necessary to extend equal marriage rights to same-sex couples.

The bill would retain civil partnerships for gay couples and give civil partners the option of converting their union to a marriage.

The two-page bill lists five legislative steps necessary to implement equal marriage and comes ahead of the government’s promise to open a consultation in March of this year on how to introduce equal civil marriage.

UK: Gay Group Stonewall Reverses Course, Will Campaign for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Stonewall LogoGay lobbying charity Stonewall says it will campaign for lesbian and gay couples to have civil marriages in the UK. The charity has come under pressure in recent months from several of its co-founders and other gay campaigners to widen its remit on the issue.

In a statement posted on its website, the charity said: “Stonewall is pleased to be widening its campaigning objectives to include extending the legal form of marriage to gay people. We seek to secure marriage for gay people as a civil vehicle on the same basis as heterosexual marriage, available in a registry office but without a mandate on religious organisations to celebrate it. We seek to retain civil partnerships for lesbian and gay people recognising their special and unique status.”

It is not yet clear whether the charity supports giving heterosexual couples the right to civil partnerships.

UK: Tatchell Calls New Gay Marriage Survey Flawed

Monday, October 18th, 2010

United Kingdom Gay MarriageDespite being founded to secure gay equality, the gay lobby group Stonewall is refusing to campaign against the ban on gay civil marriage. It is not committed to full equal rights for lesbian and gay people.

Stonewall seems content with civil partnerships. The vast majority of gay people are not content. They want the legal right to get married in a civil ceremony in a registry office, on the same basis as heterosexual couples.

Now, in an attempt to deflect criticism, Stonewall has announced a survey on whether its supporters want gay marriage legalised. But the survey method and process are flawed and unfair. Contrary to the impression given by Stonewall, it is not surveying its supporters specifically on the issue of gay marriage. It is conducting a general survey encompassing 12 different lesbian and gay issues.

UK: Gay Lobby Group Refuses to Campaign for Marriage Equality

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has slammed gay lobby group Stonewall for refusing to campaign for marriage equality. During a meeting at the Liberal Democrat party conference on Monday night, the charity’s chief executive, Ben Summerskill, claimed the organisation would not fight on the issue due to monetary matters.

He claimed it would cost the taxpayer £5 billion.

“Although Stonewall does a lot of valuable, important work, on this issue it is wrong,” said Tatchell. “It is, in effect, actively undermining the campaign for marriage equality.”
