New Study: Marriage Equality Improves State Budgets

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011

Recent studies are increasingly supportive of the idea that marriage equality will have not only moral and psychological impacts on the people involved, but could also bring economic prosperity to their states in the long term.

Findings by the UCLA’s Williams Institute at the School of Law this month predict that marriage equality in Rhode Island would positively affect the state budget by $1.2 million over the first three years following its legalization. The estimates are based on various factors such as increased revenue from state marriage license fees, income, and sales taxes.

Resident same-sex couples in Rhode Island would spend nearly $4 million on wedding expenses, and out-of-state visitors would generate an additional $1.35 million in spending and accommodations. Rhode Island is currently one of only two New England states that do not have marriage equality, but a bill is pending in the House and its judiciary committee held a high-profile hearing just last week.

Being Gay in Israel

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Being Gay in IsraelThe first extensive profile of Israel’s gay and lesbian community concludes that Lesbians do not tell anyone about their sexual orientation, on average, for two and a half years after they begin doubting whether they are heterosexual, while gay men often remain in the closet longer – about three and a half years.

The comprehensive study was conducted by four researchers at Hoshen, an educational center for the gay community in Israel: Aylon Slater, Uri Ike, Inbal Katsaf and Shai Hertz.

Hoshen is an independent organization that aims to integrate members of the gay community into mainstream society through educational programs, with an emphasis on tolerance, pluralism and openness. Much of their work is done through lessons and lectures given by representatives of the group, under the auspices of the Education Ministry, with an emphasis on sharing personal stories and experiences.

DADT Study: Little Impact From Repeal

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Don't Ask Don't TellDefense Secretary Robert Gates told Pentagon reporters on Tuesday that existing policies such as housing and spousal benefits for military service members “can and should be applied equally to homosexuals as well as heterosexuals.”

Gates says he does not expect the Pentagon would have to rethink those policies to accommodate gays if they are allowed to serve openly in the military.

He said a majority of concerns associated with repealing the “don’t ask, don’t tell” provision against gays serving openly could be addressed through increased training and education.

Senator Graham Says DADT Will Not Be Repealed, Calls for More Study

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

Senator Lindsey GrahamSenator Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) predicted on Sunday that the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy would not be repealed during the remaining weeks Congress is in session this calendar year.

The South Carolina Republican, a proponent of the law banning openly gay service in the armed forces, said definitively that there was no support for repeal on the Republican side of the aisle. He called for an additional study to determine whether the military itself favored overturning the 17-year-old legislation.

“This is a political promise made by Senator Obama when he was running for president,” said Graham, during an appearance on Fox News Sunday. “There is no groundswell of opposition to Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell coming from our military. This is all politics.”

Lieberman, Collins to Military: Release DADT Study Now (On Top Magazine)

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Lieberman, CollinsTwo members of the Senate Armed Services Committee are asking Defense Secretary Robert Gates to release a report on repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” before its scheduled December 1 release. Senators Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) joined in making the request on Monday.

Opponents of the law that bans gay and bisexual service members from serving openly are urging senators to reconsider repeal during the lame-duck session of Congress, which began on Monday.

Details of the report leaked to the Washington Post show more than 70 percent of troops are OK with repeal of the policy that has ended the military careers of more than 13,000 service members.

US Study: 68% View Gays, Lesbians With Kids as a Family; 30% Say Pets Count, But Not Gays

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

New research being released Wednesday shows steadily increasing recognition of unmarried couples – gay and straight – as families. But there’s a solid core resisting this trend who are more willing to include pets in their definition than same-sex partners. How “family” is defined is a crucial question on many levels. Beyond the debate over same-sex marriage, it affects income tax filings, adoption and foster care practices, employee benefits, inheritance rights and countless other matters.

The new research on the topic is contained in a book-length study, “Counted Out: Same-Sex Relations and Americans’ Definition of Family” and in a separate 2010 survey overseen by the book’s lead author, Indiana University sociologist Brian Powell. Between 2003 and 2010, three surveys conducted by Powell’s team showed a significant shift toward counting same-sex couples with children as family – from 54 percent of respondents in 2003 to 68 percent in 2010. In all, more than 2,300 people were surveyed.

Powell linked the changing attitudes to a 10 percent rise between 2003 and 2010 in the share of survey respondents who reported having a gay friend or relative. “This indicates a more open social environment in which individuals now feel more comfortable discussing and acknowledging sexuality,” Powell said. Only about one-third of those surveyed said they considered same-sex couples without children to be a family. And in 2006, when asked if gay couples and pets count as family, 30 percent said pets count but not gay couples.

IA: New Study Shows No Harm From Gay Marriage

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Although social conservatives in the 2010 election campaign depict gay marriage as a threat to married life as we know it, Iowa’s 18-month experience with the newly legalized institution has revealed striking similarities to traditional marriage and no discernible harm to it, according to an IowaWatch study.

Moreover, marriage statistics show that female couples made up nearly two-thirds of the same-sex marriages in Iowa in the year after the state Supreme Court ruled it legal in April 2009.

Although experts say a single year does not constitute a trend, they say the disparity is consistent with the traditional way Americans raise children and establish their gender roles early in life. The disparity also reflects similar trends in other states where same-sex marriages are allowed.

Study: Kids From Gay Families Same in School As Straight Families

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

In nearly every discussion, debate or lawsuit about gay marriage, the talk at some point turns to family values. Do gay couples make for good parents? Will their children – whether adopted, conceived with the help of a surrogate or brought in from a pre-existing relationship – adjust, adapt and succeed in a world dominated by traditional families?

The answers usually depend on who’s giving them, and come dressed in anecdotes and coloured by bias. But Stanford sociologist Michael Rosenfeld brings something new to the conversation: facts and figures derived from the country’s largest data bank – the U.S. Census.

In a study published this month in the journal Demography, Rosenfeld concludes that children being raised by same-sex couples have nearly the same educational achievement as children raised by married heterosexual couples.

Study of Gay Marriage Polling to be Released Tuesday

Monday, June 14th, 2010

A public policy and opinion researcher is expected to release a report on Tuesday that looks at the accuracy of polls on same-sex marriage in ballot measure fights across the country.

Patrick J. Egan, a Politics and Public Policy professor at New York University will present his research on “Findings from a Decade of Polling on Ballot Measures Regarding the Legal Status of Same-Sex Couples” in a national teleconference tomorrow morning. Same-sex marriage is an important issue in the Palm Springs area.

In 2008, the California Supreme Court ruled a same-sex marriage ban
unconstitutional that had roughly 18,000 gay couples across the state rushing to the alter until voters approved Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that reinstituted the ban. Polls leading up to election night had shown public sentiment favored allowing gay couples to marry.

Survey: Attitudes About Homosexuality Improved Dramatically Since 1981, But Not in US

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

I’ve been hip-deep in World Values Survey data the last couple of days while working on a chapter on economic growth and liberalizing value change. Here are charts of trends in several wealthy liberal democracies on attitudes toward homosexuality and prostitution. What you see are changes through the five waves of the WVS in the percentage of the sample in each country that said these things are “Never justifiable” on a 1-10 scale running from “Never” to “Always.”

In the space of about 25 years, the proportion of the population in all these countries saying homosexuality is never justifiable drops precipitously. However, the overall trend in attitudes toward prostitution is not so clear and generally less dramatic. What accounts for the difference? Here are a few possibilities, about which I have no evidence.

(1) Being versus doing. People just are homosexual, and it’s not up to us if we are. Prostitution on the other hand is an activity we can more easily choose to avoid.
