Fast-Food Chain to Drop Support of Anti Gay Groups

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Chick-Fil-AChick-Fil-A President Dan Cathy says the company is dropping its support for anti-gay marriage groups. The announcement comes after gay website GoodAsYou.org blogged about the chicken restaurant’s sponsorship of a marriage seminar closely associated with the anti-gay marriage group Pennsylvania Family Institute.

In a two-minute-twenty-seven-second video message released nearly three weeks ago, Cathy denied that the company’s donation was an endorsement of its values.

“Let me be clear, Chick-Fil-A serves all people and values all people,” Cathy said.

More and More Catholic Lawmakers Support Marriage Equality

Monday, January 10th, 2011

Elected officials who are Catholic are stepping up to support marriage equality – often despite heavy-handed tactics by the Catholic hierarchy. Political figures know that Catholics in the electorate continue to grow in their acceptance of marriage equality for LGBT people.

Recent Pew Research shows almost 50% of Catholics, regardless of how often they attend church, support full marriage equality.

In Rhode Island, a Catholic bishop recently lashed out at state officials for introducing a bill for marriage equality to the General Assembly. Governor Lincoln Chafee responded, “Our foundation here in Rhode Island was built on tolerance and acceptance and this is an area I want to move our state forward on, by building on our strengths of centuries ago.” Rhode Island would join Iowa, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont and Washington, D.C., if it passes. Rhode Island already recognizes marriages of same-sex couples from out of state.

US: DADT Survey Shows 70% OK With Gay Soldiers

Friday, November 12th, 2010

An internal survey conducted by the Department of Defense involving active duty and reserve troops found that more than 70% of respondents did not express opposition to repealing the ban on homosexuals serving openly in the military.

The effect of discarding “don’t ask, don’t tell” would either be positive, mixed or nonexistent, according to The Washington Post, which spoke with two people who have read the unpublished 370-page Pentagon report.

The authors of the study, Defense Department general counsel Jeh Johnson and Army Gen. Carter Ham, reportedly concluded that lifting the ban would not interfere with the war effort in Afghanistan, and that objections within the armed services to openly-gay soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines would drop once they were able to live and serve alongside everyone else.

Australia: Political Support Building for Marriage Equality

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageThe grooms wore black suits, no ties. It was an intimate affair with just 12 guests. Lake Ontario glistened in the background as Ashley and Glenn Anderson-Buick were married. Random onlookers congratulated them. “Where’s the bride?” asked a homeless man who had watched the exchange of vows. Ashley pointed to his new husband, who was offered 50 cents as a wedding present.

A year later, the wedding was re-enacted in a more lavish fashion for an audience of 65. Australian friends flew to Canada to observe an event that for years has been legal in that country – but remains politically contentious in Australia.

The couple met in Sydney in January 2006. Ashley, originally from Canada, was studying in Melbourne. Glenn, from New Zealand, had long lived in Sydney. They commuted between the two cities for six months. And then, in July of that year, they got hitched. They were, in Ashley’s words, “smitten kittens”.

Australia: Which Labor MP’s Support Gay Marriage?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Australia Labor CabinetI think we need to create a PUBLIC list of who definitely supports us (MPs, but also other Labor notables) and who doesn’t. PLEASE SEND INFO VIA THE COMMENT FUNCTION ON OTHER LABOR FIGURES WHO HAVE TOLD YOU THEY WILL SUPPORT EQUALITY.

In a much smaller way I tried to do the calculations for the Cabinet already … before the election … now it is time for an update and to expand it to all MPs and Senators. For the new Cabinet the figures are: 8 yes, 5 swinging, 7 no.

The real power-base for equality supporters, however, lies just outside the Cabinet in the general Ministry and amongst the factional power-brokers and leading state figures. Here there is virtually no charismatic or credible opposition, but there is an increasing list of supporters.

USA: Pew Poll Shows Record Support for Marriage Equality

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Pew finds record support for marriage equality. Notice that support has increased in every generation over time, with a clear backlash moment in the first years of the new century. And notice too that the biggest recent increases have come from the older generations. Kincaid celebrates:

[W]hile the results are predictable (supporters are younger, educated, Democratic, liberal, and female), there are sizable portions of non-traditional supporters who now favor equality:

38% – men
35% – Southerners
34% – high-school or less
30% – African Americans
28% – age 65 or older
24% – Republicans
16% – “conservative” Republicans
14% – white Evangelicals who attend church weekly

While some of these numbers are small, they are the one which give me the most hope. If a quarter of all Republicans (and 1 in 7 conservative Republicans) support equality, then it can no longer be assumed that the party will hold together much longer in ideological opposition to decency.

IA: 53% Support Gay Marriage in New Poll (KCCI)

Friday, June 4th, 2010

In the past 14 months, the Iowa Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages and the Iowa Board of Pharmacy recommended that the state legalize medical marijuana. Now, a new NewsChannel 8 poll shows that a majority of Iowans support both ideas. The survey found that 53 percent of those polled said they favor marriage rights for same-sex couples and that 41 percent are opposed.

Opponents of same-sex marriage put candidates on notice this week, delivering a petition to the statehouse that they said makes clear that the issue will be on the minds of voters. “When folks go to the polls next week and then in November, they will in fact support candidates who understand their Constitution and who will defend marriage,” said Bryan English of the Iowa Family Policy Center.

He said he feels that the NewsChannel 8 poll results don’t accurately reflect the feelings of most Iowans.

CA: New LA Times Poll: 52% of Registered Voters Support Gay Marriage

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

A poll suggests same-sex marriage is supported by a majority of registered voters in California, where gay marriage was banned in a 2008 referendum. When asked if “same-sex couples should be allowed to become legally married in the state of California,” 52 percent of those surveyed said “Yes” and 40 percent said “No,” the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

The poll, conducted by the Times and the University of Southern California, suggested registered voters younger than 30 support same-sex marriage by about a 3-to-1 margin and most of those 64 and older oppose it.

In the poll, the lopsided margin was repeated among Democrats and liberals supporting same-sex marriage and Republicans and conservatives opposing it.
