Australia: Wanna Ride on the Mardi Gras Marriage Equality Float?

Marriage Equality Float at Sydney Mardi GrasWould you like to join the Australian Marriage Equality float at this year’s Mardi Gras? Marriage equality was a major theme at last year’s Mardi Gras Parade, but the organisers of 2012′s float sat they expect it to be even bigger and better than previous years.

Australian Marriage Equality need people to help create and build their float, and march and dance on the huge parade night itself – 3 March 2012.

As many as 9,000 people are expected to make their way down Oxford and Flinders Streets in this year’s colourful, outrageous demonstration of LGBTQI pride. Cheering them on will be 300,000 spectactors lining the Darlinghurst streets to watch the glittering procession of exotic costumes and political slogans.

Australia: Thousands Rally for Marriage Equality

Sydney Marriage Equality RallyA rally in support of the legalization of gay marriage in Australia drew thousands on Saturday, The Australian reported. Police estimated the crowd at more than 5,000.

The demonstrators marched from Sydney’s Hyde Park to Darling Harbour, site of the Australian Labor Party’s (ALP) national conference.

The ALP, Australia’s ruling party, on Saturday voted to endorse altering its party platform and endorse marriage equality. But the impact of the vote was diluted when the party also endorsed Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s motion to allow lawmakers to make a “conscience vote” on bills related to gay marriage, which allows lawmakers to vote as they please rather than the party line.

Australia: All Eyes on Sydney for Marriage Equality Vote

Australia Gay Marriage VoteThree important events for the queer, and sex and gender diverse (SGD) communities, will be held in Sydney this weekend, with each event to feature plenty of discussion on marriage rights at a time when PM Julia Gillard and her Labor colleagues will be debating similar issues at their National Conference in Darling Harbour.

In what is expected to be Australia’s largest ever public rally in support of marriage equality, thousands will march from Hyde Park to the Sydney Convention Centre on Saturday, December 3 to send a message to Labor members at the National Conference to back changes to the Marriage Act.

Cat Rose, convener for Community Action Against Homophobia (CAAH), one of the organisers of the rally, told SX it was of utmost importance that peoples voices were heard, particularly in light of Gillard’s push for a conscience vote on marriage equality.

Australia: Sydney MCC Reaffirms Marriage Equality Support

Sydney MCC - Gay MarriageThe Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) Sydney reaffirmed its support for marriage equality and called for churches that support same-sex marriage to be allowed to marry couples in line with their faiths.

MCC Sydney is part of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), which has more than 43,000 members in more than 250 churches in 22 countries. The denomination has a long history of supporting the rights of all couples to marry.

“In its 40-year history, the UFMCC has taken a strong and uncompromising stand in favour of equality and social justice for all people,” the statement read.

Huge Marriage Equality Video Shoot Planned for Sydney on September 25th

Australia Gay Marriage Video Shoot - SydneyAustralia’s most high-profile marriage equality activists preparing to create a huge new campaign video – and are seeking YOU among thousands of others to join them in Sydney for the shoot.

“We will be filling Sydney Town Hall with thousands of people of all ages on Sunday September 25 to create a stunning video and send a powerful message of support to our government,” says Australian Marriage Equality.

All ages and backgrounds are welcome, and the video shoot will run from 1-4pm. Australian Marriage Equality is a national, membership-based organisation working for equal marriage rights for all Australians regardless of their gender or sexuality.

Australia: National Marriage Equality Conference in December

One Love ConferenceThe first national conference to discuss the future and direction of the marriage equality campaign has been announced.

The grassroots campaign for marriage rights has been a great success to date — we have won civil unions in the ACT, three registration schemes and recognition of international same-sex marriages in Tasmania.

Same-sex loving couples and Sex and/or Gender Diverse people are still second-class citizens in Australia. We have not yet won marriage equality.

Sydney Mardi Gras Turns Out for Marriage Equality

Sydney Mardi Gras“Brides” and “grooms” danced through the streets of Sydney on Saturday as the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras campaigned for same-sex marriage in an explosion of feathers, sequins and music.

Thousands of people, some scantily clad and others donning bridal dresses or suits, turned out for the 34th parade, this year dubbed the “Say Something” march to protest Australia’s ban on gay weddings.

“Be gleeful! It gets better. It’s my eleventh gay pride in a row and this is the best one — it’s got the best message,” said Kris Pambid, clad in small black shorts and carrying red and white pom poms in homage to the TV show “Glee”. “We’ve lost our voices from screaming.”

Australia: Sydney MP Polls Electorate on Marriage Equality Issue

Sydney MP Malcolm TurnbullMALCOLM Turnbull is privately polling his own electorate’s support for gay marriage, claiming the issue will go to a vote in Federal Parliament later this year. He has sent an email poll to constituents in his Sydney seat of Wentworth.

Mr Turnbull said already about 68 per cent of 1800 people who had responded supported gay marriage. He acknowledged that community views on the issue were “changing” and that the current laws were inconsistent.
Wentworth has one of the largest gay constituencies of any federal seat in the country.

“This survey is important as community views on marriage and the legal status of same-sex relationships are rapidly changing,” his email said.

Australia: Marriage Equality Rallies Across Country Last Week

Australia Gay Marriage RalliesNational rallies on November 20 and 27 were held in support of equal marriage rights for lesbian, gay, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) couples. November 20 was also Transgender Day of Remembrance. The day started in 1999 to remember those who were killed by anti-transgender hatred or prejudice.

Across the country, trans activists addressed equal marriage rights. A minute’s silence was held to remember those killed by transphobic violence. On November, 3000 people marched in Melbourne. The young and colourful crowd marched through the city to the marriage registry on Spring St.

Speakers included comedian Josh Thomas, Hannah Gatsby and students Hannah Williams and Savannah Supski, who drew media headlines after being banned from going to their school formal together.

Two Thousand Turn Out for Sydney Marriage Equality Rally

Doug CameronStar Observer estimates upwards of two thousand people turned out to march and hear speakers including Labor Senator Doug Cameron and Greens Senator Lee Rhiannon at a same sex marriage rally beginning at the Sydney Town Hall on Saturday.

Senator Cameron was among the first of a group of colleagues to break rank with his party’s official line on relationship recognition for same-sex couples and has promised a strong push for a change in policy at the ALP’s next national Conference in December 11.

Cameron told the crowd that commitment ceremonies and relationship registries were not acceptable alternatives to giving LGBTI Australians full equality and that he was proud to stand side by side with the LGBTI community in their fight for justice.
