TN: Nissan Clarifies Stance on Anti Gay Bill, Sort Of

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Nissan in TennesseeThe dam has burst. Companies are now lining up to explain their involvement in the hateful repeal of Nashville’s civil rights ordinance. We’ve received confusing statements from both FedEx and AT&T, and now we’ve received a contradictory statement from Nissan, which chairs the board of the organization that repealed the gay/trans civil rights bill.

The following statement is being issued in response to your recent blog posts concerning HB600/SB632 here in Tennessee. You may attribute this directly to me:

“Nissan has a long-standing commitment to providing a diverse, inclusive work environment for all stakeholders, including those who are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender.

TN: Alcoa Comes Out Against Anti Gay Bill

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Alcoa in TennesseeFinally some courage. Alcoa is the only company so far to say explicitly that they oppose the Tennessee legislation that would repeal Nashville’s civil rights ordinance, and that they want the Governor to veto the bill.

Alcoa: “Alcoa provides equal employment opportunity without discrimination and supports state and local legislation protecting the rights of all community members. We do not agree with the chamber on this issue and would ask that the governor veto the bill.”

Beautiful statement. Simple, clear, to the point. No semantic games, no trying to have it both ways.

TN: Senate Passes “Don’t Say Gay” Bill 19-11

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Stacey CampfieldTennessee lawmakers have advanced two anti-gay measures. One would strengthen the state’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” rule barring mention of GLBTs in schools; the other would strip local governments of the ability to implement anti-discrimination measures that would protect GLBTs.

The “Don’t Say Gay” bill, championed by anti-gay lawmaker Stacey Campfield, would bar any reference to sexual minorities in public schools until students reach the ninth grade. Opponents to the bill worry that students, who hear anti-gay epithets and erroneous information concerning gays long before they reach the ninth grade, will be impacted by such a ban on speech in the classroom, especially GLBT youth.

But Campfield justifies the bill, saying that students should not hear about gays at school in elementary school because “homosexuals don’t naturally reproduce,” the Associated Press reported on May 20.

TN: It’s OK to Say Gay Rally Sunday in Knoxville

Friday, May 20th, 2011

It's OK to Say Gay Rally in KnoxvilleEvery student – whether straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender – has the right to feel safe and supported at school, said Devon Hicks.

That’s why Hicks, interim chair of the Tennessee Equality Project Foundation’s Safe Schools Committee, has organized an “It’s OK to Say Gay” rally from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday at Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike.

High-school students who have faced bullying and harassment will speak at the rally, and Hicks will share the details of an academic study that links community support with suicide rates among GLBT teens.

TN: Fed Ex Tries to Back Away From Anti Gay Bill Support

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Anti Gay Bill in TennesseeFedEx would like to you believe that they’re simply a member of the TN Chamber of Commerce, and gosh, they can’t be responsible for everything an organization does that they’re only a member. Here is FedEx’s statement, then an analysis:

“FedEx values and promotes the unique contributions, perspectives, and differences of our team members worldwide. FedEx does not tolerate discrimination of any kind, and is committed to diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

“FedEx did not lobby for SB632/HB600 – it is our policy not to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. While FedEx is a member of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce, we do not support every position proposed by the Chamber.”

Cute. You’re not just a member. You’re on the board of directors. That’s a far cry from being just a member who isn’t up on what’s taking place.

TN: Big Corporations Played Large Role in Passage of Anti Gay Bill

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Anti Gay Bill in TennesseeThe Tennessee Chamber of Commerce – chaired by Nissan, and whose other board members include such companies as FedEx, AT&T, Comcast, DuPont, Pfizer, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Caterpillar, KPMG, Whirlpool, Embraer, Alcoa, and United HealthCare – actively lobbied for a religious right bill in the Tennessee legislature that would rescind Nashville’s civil rights protections for its gay and trans citizens, and which bans every city in Tennessee from passing any civil rights laws, for anyone, ever again.

The bill passed yesterday. It’s on its way to the state’s Republican governor for his signature, unless he vetoes it.

And these companies led the way in making it happen. And let me reiterate, these companies aren’t just members of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce. These compares are all on the board of directors of the Tennessee Chamber of Commerce. They run the TN Chamber.

TN: Senate Delays Vote on “Don’t Say Gay” Bill

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

Tennessee Don't Say Gay BillA scheduled Tennessee Senate vote on the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill which would forbid discussion of homosexuality in public schools was postponed by the bill’s author Stacey Campfield, Metro Pulse reports:

The full Senate was supposed to vote on the bill April 28, then May 5, then May 9, then yesterday, then today. Now, according to Tennesseean reporter Chas Sisk, Campfield pulled the bill from the floor today and reset it for a vote on next Wednesday’s calendar. Sisk tweeted earlier today:

“Campfield says he’s moving SB 49, the Don’t Say Gay bill, to next Wednesday. They may not get to it that day either, then.”

TN: Senate to Vote Thursday on Taking Away Nashville’s Anti Discrimination Law

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Mae BeaversThe Tennessee Senate on Thursday is scheduled to vote on a bill that would repeal Nashville’s newly-approved gay protections ordinance.

The measure sponsored by Republican Senator Mae Beavers of Mt. Juliet was approved in the Senate State and Local Government Committee on Monday. House lawmakers overwhelmingly approved a companion bill last month.

Nashville narrowly approved last month a plan to extend the city’s gay protections to contractors, joining more than 100 communities across the nation. The city’s 2009 law bans employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity (transgender protections).

TN: Full Senate to Vote on Bill to Strop Nashville Gay Rights Ordinance

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

A proposal that would prohibit local governments from creating anti-discrimination laws that are stricter than the state’s is headed for a full Senate vote after passing a Senate panel on Monday.

The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Mae Beavers of Mt. Juliet was approved 6-3 in the Senate State and Local Government Committee. The companion bill passed the House 73-24 last month.

The proposal would void a Nashville ordinance barring companies that discriminate against gays and lesbians from doing business with the city.

TN: “Don’t Say Gay” Bill Too Late for House Passage This Year

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

A bill that seeks to outlaw the discussion of sexual minorities in Tennessee’s public schools before the ninth grade won’t get a hearing this year in the House.

Republican Senator Stacey Campfield’s bill cleared a Senate committee last week and is scheduled for a Senate floor vote on Thursday.

But the bill’s House sponsor, Representative Bill Dunn, has said there isn’t sufficient time left in this year’s session to pursue passage in the House.
