TX: Couples to Marry, March on Saturday

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

Texas Gay Marriage RalliesAshlyn Jones and Amanda Evans are getting married in downtown Dallas this weekend. They invited 50 of their friends, but would like everyone to attend. “I want people I don’t even know to come and say, ‘Congratulations,’” Jones said. “That would be awesome.”

Jones and Evans are one of at least five couples that will participate in a mass wedding on Saturday evening at Founder’s Plaza in front of the Dallas County Records Building, as part of a protest in support of marriage equality.

Event organizer Daniel Cates said the couples are encouraged to apply for a marriage license inside the Records Building earlier in the week, even though those applications will be denied.

TX: El Paso Still Battling Over Domestic Partnerships

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

El Paso Recall CampaignPastor Tom Brown wants homosexuals to repent and turn to Christ. He certainly does not want them to be given taxpayer-financed health benefits.

Mr. Brown, the charismatic leader of Word of Life Church, an independent evangelical congregation of about 1,500 members, is on a mission to ensure that the domestic partners of El Paso city workers no longer get health insurance. He is spearheading an effort to oust the mayor and two City Council members who supported an ordinance allowing the city to pay for the health benefits of unmarried employees’ domestic partners — gay and straight.

“They want to reward fornicators, and they want to reward homosexuals,” Mr. Brown said in an interview, his voice booming with indignation as he pumped his fist for emphasis.

Rick Perry: Marriage Equality a States’ Rights Issue

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

Rick PerryTexas Gov. Rick Perry, a potential Republican presidential candidate, said Friday he supports state rights so much that he’s fine with New York’s approval of gay marriage but still called himself an “unapologetic social conservative.”

Perry, who has been weighing a presidential run, said he opposes gay marriage – but that he’s also a firm believer of the 10th Amendment.

“Our friends in New York six weeks ago passed a statute that said marriage can be between two people of the same sex. And you know what? That’s New York, and that’s their business, and that’s fine with me,” he said to applause from several hundred GOP donors in Aspen, Colo. “That is their call. If you believe in the 10th Amendment, stay out of their business.”

TX: El Paso City Council Restores Benefits to Gay and Unmarried Couples

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

El Paso City Council approved an ordinance to reinstate health benefits for domestic partners of city employees and anyone else who lost them after voters approved the traditional family values ordinance last year.

The eight city representatives were split down the middle, with Mayor John Cook having the tie-breaking vote. He voted in favor of the ordinance he introduced. Reps. Beto O’Rourke, Susie Byrd, Steve Ortega and Rachel Quintana voted to approve the ordinance, while Carl Robinson, Ann Morgan Lilly, Eddie Holguin Jr. and Emma Acosta voted against it.

Holguin said he had every reason to vote in favor of the mayor’s ordinance. “The voters of El Paso voted, and they stripped benefits from lots of people including myself,” Holguin said. But he voted against it.

TX: Judge Muddies Waters of Legal Marriage and Gender

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Last week a judge in Texas ruled that a transgender woman’s marriage to her late firefighter husband was invalid. The man’s family and his ex-wife had sought to prevent the woman, Nikki Araguz, from receiving any of the $600,000 in death benefits.

The Houston Chronicle reports on the reaction from the gay community in that state:

Noel Freeman, president of the Houston Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Political Caucus, said by phone that the news was very disappointing, given that Nikki Araguz had presented legal documents, including her reissued birth certificate, showing she is female. “Here you have a birth certificate, a legally binding document, which the court has chosen to completely ignore,” Freeman said. “The transgender community jumps through a lot of legal hoops — records of sex changes, amended birth certificates – to try to live the same life that everybody else gets to live. This is a very frustrating setback.”
