MN: Anti Gay, Target Supported Candidate for Governor to Concede

Target-supported GOP candidate Tom Emmer is expected to concede the Minnesota governor’s race to Democrat Mark Dayton this morning.

The Hill reports:

“The Minnesota governor’s race will conclude Wednesday morning with the concession of Republican Tom Emmer, according to reports. On Tuesday, Emmer’s campaign withdrew almost all its remaining ballot challenges, paving the way for Democrat Mark Dayton to declare victory.

Dayton, a former senator, currently leads Emmer by about 9,000 votes out of 2.1 million cast. A recount had been under way since the Nov. 2 election but didn’t erode the Democrat’s lead.”

Boycotts Fail to Make a Dent in Target’s Bottom Line

Nearly three months after funneling $150,000 to a candidate who opposes gay marriage, Target Corp. is still dealing with the backlash from liberal groups who oppose the move. But while discussing the economy and other factors attributing to a fairly good year, the company told Ad Age last week that the negative attention hasn’t actually hurt the bottom line.

First, some quick background: The Minneapolis-based retail giant made the July 6 donation to a pro-business group called MN Forward that is backing GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer. The contribution was allowed under the Supreme Court’s landmark Citizens United ruling and related regulatory decisions that allow companies to give unlimited amounts from their corporate accounts to political causes.

Target faced an outcry from groups that saw the donation as a betrayal to the company’s gay-friendly reputation. But in an interview with Ad Age’s Natalie Zmuda, Target Exec VP-Chief Marketing Officer Michael R. Francis said the protests and boycotts appear to have had a “negligible impact,” given sales for July and August were in line with expectations. Still, the retailer is taking the situation seriously.

MN: Another Company Gives to Anti Gay Candidate’s PAC

3M – the enormous technology, health care, security, and manufacturing company that seems to be behind anything with double-sided sticky surfaces – has a market cap of $62 billion. Now it’s joining Target and Best Buy in funneling some of that cash toward MN Forward, the Minnesota business PAC that wants to elect Tom Emmer governor of the state, despite his opposition to basic things like marriage equality and anti-bullying measures.

That’s great news for Target, because for so many weeks the big box retailer was facing the brunt of the heat! And while a number of corporations have trafficked cash into MN Forward, at an emotional level it’s easier for us to find frustration with brands we regularly interact with.

Which is why you won’t care too much about Polaris Industries, Hubbard Broadcasting, or Davisco Food International, which all donated $100,000 in cash to the PAC. But Target and Best Buy? They make your blood boil, because you might want to buy a plasma TV from one of ‘em soon.

MN: HRC Gives $150K to Emmer Opponent to Counter Target Donation

A leading gay rights group will split a $150,000 donation to Minnesota campaigns between a Democratic-backed political fund, a gay rights group and candidates including Democrat Mark Dayton. The money from the Human Rights Campaign is a response to an equal amount given to a group backing Republican Tom Emmer in the governor’s race.

Target Corp. faced a backlash after giving to MN Forward, a business-oriented political fund that has run ads supporting Emmer and criticizing Dayton.

HRC President Joe Solmonese told The Associated Press Friday that his group may spend more in Minnesota because it could become the next state to legalize gay marriage. Solmonese says the group is focused on the governor’s race.

Mother of Gay Son Posts You Tube Video of Target Boycott

Last week, the Target Corporation gave $150,000 to Minnesota Forward, an anti-gay group supporting Republican Tom Emmer’s campaign for Minnesota governor.

According to a CBS News report, “Emmer is a fiery conservative who opposes gay marriage, lauds Arizona’s strict approach to illegal immigration, once advocated chemical castration for sex offenders and wants to lower taxes.”

Enter Randi Reitan, who has a gay son and whose repeated attempts to reach Target executives failed. So what did she do? She took her anger directly to her local Target and had a friend film the encounter.

MN: Target Supports Anti Gay Candidate for Governor

Target, the perceived LGBT-friendly department store chain, has contributed $150,000 to Minnesota Forward, a political action committee that supports Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, an opponent of gay marriage, reports NBC Bay Area.

Emmer, who says “I believe marriage is the union between one man and one woman,” received the money for TV ads.

Website SFist reports that Emmer is also friends with controversial musician Bradlee Dean, of the Christian rock band called You Can Run But You Cannot Hide.
