Friday, September 2nd, 2011

United Kingdom Civil PartnershipsMike Weatherley, the Conservative MP for Hove, has called for churches to be banned from holding marriages if they refuse to perform civil partnerships for gay couples.

He says that the idea will bring more equality for gay couples. In a letter (see below) to prime minister David Cameron, Mr Weatherley wrote: “As long as religious groups can refuse to preside over ceremonies for same-sex couples there will be inequality.

“Such behaviour is not be tolerated in other areas, such as adoption, after all.

UK: Conservative Party’s Equality Manifesto Promises Consideration of Gay Marriage

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

The Conservative Party have once again attempted to reach out to the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered issues) with an equality manifesto that promises to consider the case for civil partnerships to be renamed as civil marriages. It echoes a vague commitment given by shadow chancellor George Osborne to gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell but comes after a string of damaging accusations of homophobia by a number of Conservative candidates.

The equality manifesto with a foreword by shadow equalities minister Theresa May says: “Since the beginning of his leadership, David Cameron has made clear the Conservative Party’s commitment to sexual equality and gay rights – from his first conference speech, in which he proudly confirmed our support for civil partnerships, to his apology for our former stance on Section 28.

“We have supported tackling homophobic bullying and measures to tackle incitement to gay hatred, and we have opened up Conservative candidate selection to people from all backgrounds.”

UK: Gay Flashmob Gathers at Conservative Party HQ After Anti Gay Comment

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Over 300 protesters rallied in central London yesterday in a bid to determine David Cameron’s stance on gay equality. The flashmob event, dubbed David Cameron’s coming-out party, gathered outside the Conservative party headquarters in London’s Westminster.

Organised by lesbian activist Tamsin Omond and human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, it gathered pace via social networking site Facebook after Shadow Home Secretary Chris Grayling’s infamous comments that B&B owners should be allowed to discriminate against gay couples.

Activists, some of whom held placards which read ‘Come Out Cameron’ and ‘David Cameron: What Are Your Gay Policies?’, also wrote ‘Fuck Off Back To Eaton’ on the Conservative party building with white chalk – although the event was peaceful.

UK: Tory Official Says Party Would Consider Gay Marriage if Elected

Sunday, April 11th, 2010

The Tories would be “very happy” to consider same-sex marriage if elected, George Osborne has told gay activists. The shadow chancellor met gay rights leaders including Peter Tatchell ahead of a protest outside Conservative campaign HQ by equality campaigners.

Mr Tatchell said the meeting showed Mr Osborne had “good intentions” but was still “weak on coherent policy”. But Mr Osborne said the modern Tories had changed, and “we have real policies to advance equality”.

Civil partnerships give gays and lesbians the right to the same legal treatment across a range of matters as married couples. But the government stopped short of referring to such unions as marriages when the Civil Partnerships Act was passed in 2004.

UK: Conservatives Gain Support in Gay Community After Tories Become More Gay Friendly

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

A poll of PinkNews.co.uk readers has found that although Labour is still the top choice for gay voters, there has been a substantial shift towards the Conservative Party since the last election. Among first time gay voters, the Conservatives are overwhelmingly the most popular party.

Our survey of more than a thousand readers found that 28 per cent said they would vote Labour if a general election was held tomorrow, with the Tories and the Lib Dems following on 25 per cent each. The Greens came fourth with 19 per cent.

Only 17 per cent of respondents voted Tory in the last election in 2005. A PinkNews.co.uk poll last June placed David Cameron’s party ahead of Labour at 39 per cent compared to 29 per cent, but the Tories have lost their lead since the controversy over their European allies, who have been accused of homophobia.
