UK: Gay Man Wins Front Cover of London Paper, Proposes to Boyfriend

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

Gay Marriage ProposalLondon’s free daily newspaper Metro gave its readers a chance to win the cover one day this week – so a gay fan of the paper used the unique opportunity to make a romantic proposal. “To my darling Ben Daniel Collins – Will you marry me? Lots of Love, Jon Mark Ireland,” read the especially-designed Metro front page.

Ireland, 27, has been with partner Collins for five years, and was keen for his proposal to make a splash – but he worried his beloved wouldn’t see the paper, as available copies disappear quickly each day.

“On the train, this guy was reading it in front of me,” Collins tells Metro. “Then I saw my name and I thought ‘what?’ I sort of blinked twice, then I’m looking around for a Metro – I gave up my seat to try to find one.”

UK: Gay Northampton Couple to Ask for Marriage License in Campaign

Monday, November 15th, 2010

UK Gay MarriageA gay couple in Northampton will attempt to marry tomorrow as part of a campaign to open up marriage and civil partnerships to both straight and gay couples.

Matthew Toresen and Scott Maloney will almost certainly be turned away from Northampton Register Office and plan to take legal action over the refusal.

They are the third couple in the Equal Love campaign to apply for a ceremony they are not entitled to. Earlier this month, Rev Sharon Ferguson and her partner Franka Streitzel were denied permission to marry in Greenwich, while Tom Freeman and Katherine Doyle were refused a civil partnership in Islington.

England: Straight Couple Challenges Civil Partnership System

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

United Kingdom Gay MarriageHow about this for a proposal? Darling, I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. The thing is, I don’t approve of marriage. It’s riddled with historical baggage and is a discriminatory system still forbidden to our gay friends. So why don’t we publicly declare our love by challenging Britain’s marriage laws and register a heterosexual civil partnership? They’ll say no, of course, but at least we can battle them in the courts for years.

That is exactly what Tom Freeman and his partner, Katherine Doyle, will do tomorrow when they go to Islington Register Office and request a civil partnership. “It’s not very romantic,” admits Ms Doyle with a smile. “But it’s something that needs to be done.”

Their ruse is part of a campaign by eight gay and straight couples to challenge the bans preventing gay couples from marrying and heterosexual couples from seeking a civil partnership. In the coming weeks, the couples will head to their nearest register office to ask for something they know will be refused. Then they will launch a joint legal action arguing that Britain’s marriage laws are discriminatory and illegal under human rights legislation.

UK: First of Eight Gay Couples Denied Wedding License

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

United Kingdom Gay MarriageThe first of eight gay and straight couples to challenge the UK’s marriage laws have been denied a marriage at a London registry office, as expected. Rev Sharon Ferguson and her partner Franka Streitzel, the lead gay couple in the Equal Love campaign, were denied permission to marry this morning in Greenwich.

They expected to be rejected and are to return to the registry office tomorrow to pick up an official letter of rejection, which they will hand to Professor Robert Wintemute, their lawyer in the case.

Rev Ferguson told PinkNews.co.uk: “It is about segregation and discrimination. Straight couples can get married but not have a civil partnership, gay couples can have a civil partnership but can’t get married.”

UK: Campaign for Marriage Equality Kicks Off at Greenwich Registry Office Tomorrow

Monday, November 1st, 2010

United Kingdom Gay MarriageCampaigners are set to launch their concerted legal bid to push through a change in the law preventing gay marriage. Reverend Sharon Ferguson and Franka Strietzel will apply tomorrow for a civil marriage licence at Greenwich registry office, beginning the first steps of the ‘Equal Love’ campaign.

If, as the campaigners expect, the application is refused, a legal challenge against the current ban on gay marriage will be launched on the basis of human rights legislation.

The move is the first of eight planned applications, four by gay couples for civil marriages and four by heterosexual couples for civil partnerships (which are illegal for mixed-sex pairings) – in a bid to build up pressure on the government to consider a change.

UK: Profile of Lesbian Couple Planning Gay Marriage Action

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

A LESBIAN minister and her partner are to apply for a civil marriage, and say that they will take legal action if it is rejected. Their action is part of a campaign to allow same-sex couples to be married, and heterosexual couples to enter into civil partner ships.

The Revd Sharon Ferguson, the chief executive of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement (LGCM), and pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church of North London, and her partner, Franka Strietzel, will make an application on 2 November to be married at the register office at Greenwich.

By 14 December, a total of eight couples — four same-sex, four hetero sexual — will file applications for civil marriages and civil partnerships at their local register office. Under the Civil Partnerships Act 2004, only same-sex couples may enter into a civil partnership. The action is being co-ordinated by the “Equal Love” campaign run by Peter Tatchell, the human-rights activist.

UK: Gay Group Stonewall Reverses Course, Will Campaign for Marriage Equality

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

Stonewall LogoGay lobbying charity Stonewall says it will campaign for lesbian and gay couples to have civil marriages in the UK. The charity has come under pressure in recent months from several of its co-founders and other gay campaigners to widen its remit on the issue.

In a statement posted on its website, the charity said: “Stonewall is pleased to be widening its campaigning objectives to include extending the legal form of marriage to gay people. We seek to secure marriage for gay people as a civil vehicle on the same basis as heterosexual marriage, available in a registry office but without a mandate on religious organisations to celebrate it. We seek to retain civil partnerships for lesbian and gay people recognising their special and unique status.”

It is not yet clear whether the charity supports giving heterosexual couples the right to civil partnerships.

UK: Gay Couples to Challenge Gay Marriage Ban

Saturday, October 23rd, 2010

United Kingdom Gay Marriage

A campaign to overturn the bans on gay marriage and heterosexual civil partnerships is to begin next month when eight couples will file applications at British register offices for ceremonies they are presently not allowed to hold.

Four same-sex couples will apply for civil marriage and four heterosexual couples for civil partnerships. Each week, up to 14 December, one of the eight couples will make an application. The campaign’s co-ordinator, Peter Tatchell, said there was growing political party support for an end to the bans as well as public support for same-sex couples. “Our aim is to overturn both the ban on same-sex marriage and the ban on opposite-sex civil partnerships.

“If they are refused, as we expect they will be, we plan to mount a legal challenge. We believe these bans violate the Human Rights Act and are open to challenge in the high court,” said Tatchell, of the lesbian and gay rights campaign group, OutRage! “Civil marriages and civil partnerships should be open to everyone without discrimination.”

UK: Gay Israeli MP Talks Gay Marriage in London

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Nitzan HorowitzNitzan Horowitz, the first openly gay politician to be elected to the Israeli Knesset (Parliament), is a man on a mission. Representing the left of centre, pro-peace New Movement-Meretz party, he has called for Israel to introduce secular marriages for gay and straight couples as well as campaigning for help for LGBT people from neighboring Arab countries who risk death if returned home.

Speaking last week at a London meeting of young members of the Zionist Federation as well as a separate audience of LGBT Jews, Mr Horowitz spoke of his experiences as a gay politician and how they have informed his campaigning for human and gay rights across the middle east.

“If you solve the issues about separating religion from the state you can solve a lot of the issues relating to LGBT rights,” he told both groups.
