CA: NOM Launching Robocalls Against Tom Campbell Over Gay Marriage Support

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

The National Organization for Marriage, which opposes gay marriage, said Friday it is launching robocalls against former Rep. Tom Campbell in the Republican U.S. Senate primary. The New Jersey-based group previously aired an independent television ad against Campbell attacking him for his fiscal policies and stance on gay marriage. Campbell supports gay marriage and opposed the 2008 constitutional amendment, Proposition 8, which recognized marriage in California only between a man and a woman.

NOM says it intends to reach 609,000 likely GOP primary voters. “The explicit message of this campaign is: don’t vote for Tom Campbell, because he supports gay marriage as well as raising taxes,” Brian Brown, the organization’s president, said in a statement.

Campbell has said he does not believe in higher taxes, but he would not rule them out entirely. As a gubernatorial candidate last year, he proposed a one-year, 32-cent per gallon tax hike to help balance the budget. He has declined to sign no-new-tax pledges because he says there may be emergency situations in which the federal government would need new tax revenue.

US: Senate Immigration Bill Would Allow Gay/Lesbian Americans to Sponsor Foreign Partners

Friday, April 30th, 2010

An immigration reform “framework” proposed Thursday by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and fellow Democrats includes gay families. The inclusion is likely to anger social conservatives and major immigration allies.

Included in the “framework” are key provisions of the Uniting American Families Act. The legislation was previously offered as a standalone bill by Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont in the Senate and Representative Jerrold Nadler in the House. The measure would allow gay Americans to sponsor an immigrant partner for citizenship.

“Today’s inclusive framework is an historic step forward for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender binational families,” Rachel B. Tiven, executive director of Immigration Equality, a group that lobbies on behalf of binational gay and lesbian couples, said in a statement.

DC: Lesbian Judge Confirmed by Senate for DC Superior Court

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Senators confirmed the judicial nomination of Marisa Demeo, an openly lesbian candidate, late Tuesday. The 66-32 vote fell largely along partisan lines. Republicans opposed to Demeo have blocked her confirmation to the D.C. Superior Court bench since her March 2009 nomination by President Obama.

South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint has led the opposition, telling the National Law Journal in February: “A number of Republicans had concerns and asked me, as chairman of Steering, to ask for limited debate and a recorded vote because of a history of very leftist activism. There are just a number of things that don’t look like a fair-and-balanced approach that you’d like in a judge.”

Demeo, a D.C. magistrate judge since 2007, has worked as a lobbyist and advocate for Hispanic causes. She also has a history of gay activism and holds membership in several groups that advocate for gay and lesbian rights, including the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.

CA: NOM Funding Ad Against Senate Candidate Tom Campbell

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

A group that promotes traditional marriage is funding a ad campaign against republican U.S. Senate candidate Tom Campbell. The anti-Campbell ad is a direct result of Campbell’s support of gay marriage.

Campbell openly opposed Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot initiative that banned gay marriage in California. He wrote an op ed piece where he laid out “Why Republicans should vote no on Prop. 8.”

Campbell wrote: “Republicans believe deeply that government should be limited. Government has no business making distinctions between people based on their personal lives. That’s why, as a Californian and a Republican who has held elective office at the federal and state levels, I will be voting No on Proposition 8.”
