VT: Marriage Equality Advocate Joins State Supreme Court

Monday, November 28th, 2011

Vermont Supreme Court(Host) A new justice has joined the Vermont Supreme Court. Governor Peter Shumlin swore in Beth Robinson Monday afternoon as an associate justice. She replaces Denise Johnson, who is retiring.

Robinson is a 46-year-old lawyer and long-time gay rights advocate. She says she’ll decide cases impartially based on the statutes.

(Robinson) “To me, my pledge is to remember the people because to me the only thing that is important is respecting this abstraction that we call the law, is respecting the people who both shape and give life to that abstraction and whose lives are, in turn, shaped by the dictates that the law requires.”
(Host) Since January, Robinson has served as Shumlin’s general counsel.

Marriage Equality and the Vermont Brand

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Marriage Equality in VermontThe idea that Vermont is exceptional has long influenced its self-image. The landscape is certainly extraordinary and, in historical terms, there is some basis for the claim. After all, it was an Independent Republic for almost 15 years and the first state to ban slavery.

Once anti-slavery activism opened the door for the Republican Party, Vermont stayed solidly Republican for a century. Its population was small and predominantly white, but its political system has featured the direct democracy of Town Meeting Day, short terms for officials, strong environmental laws, and, as of April 2009, same-sex marriage.

Vermont’s Legislature was the first in the nation to legalize gay marriage, another in a series of breaks with conventional political thinking that contribute to the state’s iconoclastic brand. Here is a brief look at how it happened, and the role played by Gov. Howard Dean.

VT: Gay Naval Officer to Marry Partner After Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Expires

Monday, September 19th, 2011

When Navy Lt. Gary Ross and his partner were searching for a place to get married, they settled on a site in Vermont, in part because the state is in the Eastern time zone.

That way, the two men could recite their vows at the first possible moment after the formal repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. The partners of 11 years plan to get married at the stroke of midnight, just as the ban ends.

“We feel that it’s important that as soon as we’re allowed to commit to each other that we do,” Ross said Monday. “It’s important not to hide anymore.”
