Australia: Victorian ALP Votes in Favor of Marriage Equality

Friday, October 7th, 2011

Australia Gay Marriage VoteThe ALP state conference has voted to send a message to Julia Gillard to “get over it” and legalise gay marriage. Only the conservative shop assistant’s union voted against the urgency motion.

However, national secretary Joe De Bruyn declined to debate the issue, saying it was a matter for the national platform and the powerful union would save its arguments for the National conference in December.

Ms Gillard has regularly reiterated her opposition to gay marriage, but a strong move is expected at the national conference to change the party’s platform, which will put pressure on the federal government to amend the Marriage Act.

Australia: Lack of Quorum Scuttles Victoria Marriage Equality Discussion

Saturday, May 21st, 2011

Victoria Gay MarriageA Victorian Labor Party move to back same-sex marriage has failed to even be discussed because there were not enough people in the room to vote.

The issue had been set to put the Victorian ALP at odds with Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who does not support gay marriage.

But that and other motions that were to be debated by the state conference in Melbourne on Saturday did not go ahead, all because the meeting was short by the two or three people needed to have a quorum.

Australia: Victoria’s Labor Party Leader Endorses Marriage Equality

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Daniel AndrewsThe Labor Party’s Victorian leader (the second largest state), Daniel Andrews, has given his backing to equality in Australia.

“Like a growing number of Australians I recognise that denying same sex couples the option of marriage is unfair,” Mr Andrews told The Australian. “My view on this issue was influenced when one of my staff and her partner had to travel to America to get married. That brought home to me the unfairness of the current situation.”

Australia: New Victorian Government Trying to Weaken Protections for Gays, Single Parents

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

The true nature of the new Victorian Liberal Government is starting to emerge.

Last week the Victorian Attorney-General, Robert Clark, introduced legislation to substantially weaken protection against discrimination for single parents, defacto couples and members of Victoria’s gay and lesbian community.

The legislation, if passed, would repeal a carefully drafted provision of the Equal Opportunities Act 2010, enacted by the previous Labor Government. This provision prevents religious groups from discriminating in hiring staff on religious grounds, unless the organisation can identify how a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity affects their ability to meet the inherent requirements of the job.

Australia: Greens Promise Gay Marriage Bill in Victoria if Elected

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Australia Gay MarriageTHE Victorian Parliament could have a debate on same-sex marriage, with the Greens candidate in a strong position to snatch the seat of Melbourne pledging to introduce a private member’s bill on what has become a hot issue.

Brian Walters told The Age that he would introduce a private member’s bill to allow same-sex marriage if he wins Education Minister Bronwyn Pike’s seat at the November 27 state election.

With a hung parliament a real possibility, the Greens could be in a good position to negotiate for a conscience vote. But such a vote could only happen with the consent of the party leaders and the party room. Both Premier John Brumby and Opposition Leader Ted Baillieu have indicated they are opposed to same-sex marriage.
