AK, USA: 8,000 Ballots Remain Uncounted or Suspect

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

Alaska Gay Rights BillAs we’ve been reporting all week, the recent election in Anchorage, Alaska in which Proposition 5, a long-fought-for LGBT anti-discrimination ordinance, failed to pass, was muddied by potential voter fraud and polling places running out of ballots.

An update from the Alaska Dispatch:

The Municipal Clerk’s office has released a final tally for questioned ballots across all Anchorage precincts. With all precincts reporting, 6,095 questioned ballots have been discovered. By comparison, during the last municipal election there were only 1,060 questioned ballots. About 55,000 ballots were counted after Tuesday’s election.

There also was an updated count offered by the municipality regarding those “unscanned ballots” — ones that weren’t electronically tabulated by Accuvote machines. The preliminary total: 1,433 unscanned ballots. Those included voters who showed up, signed in, but weren’t electronically counted on election day. Those who used sample ballots or other non-official ballots (mayor challenger Paul Honeman alleged some voters had to poll on napkins).

NC, USA: One Month Until Amendment One Vote

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Amendment OneSupporters are calling it “the marriage amendment,” while opponents are calling it “Amendment One.” The idea that the two sides can’t even agree on a name begins to show how much each side differs in their opinion about its potential impact.

The constitutional amendment will appear on the state’s May 8 primary ballot. Voters will be asked to vote for or against a “Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.”

“First of all, the notion that they nicknamed it Amendment One is quite deceptive,” said Patrick Wooden, an outspoken pastor in Raleigh who is against gay marriage. “That’s not the way it would be on the ballot. It’s actually ‘the marriage amendment.’ The reason opponents have given it the de facto name Amendment One is because they can’t think about citizens voting against marriage so they put a benign-sounding name on it.”

AK, USA: Headlines Announcing Failure of Prop 5 Premature?

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Alaska Gay Rights InitiativeHeadlines which announce the failure of Proposition 5 are premature, according to Bent Alaska, an Anchorage-based LGBT community website. Proposition 5 would have added sexual orientation and gender identity to the Anchorage Equal Rights non-discrimination code.

According to Bent Alaska, unanticipated voter turnout and voting irregularities were caused by misinformation sent out by Proposition 5 opponent Jim Minnery, and have left a cloud over election results. Following is their report, by Editor Mel Green.

In spite of the Anchorage Daily News headline “Voters reject sexual orientation initiative”, it’s far from clear that voters have in fact done so. Two hours before voting ended last night, numerous polling places had run out of ballots. Staff of the municipal clerk’s office was sent scurrying all over town bringing additional ballots and even additional envelopes for questioned ballots.

AK, USA: Bigots Win in Alaska 58% to 42% With Dirty Campaign Against Gay Rights

Wednesday, April 4th, 2012

Anchorage Gay Rights Initiative FailsVoters in Alaska’s largest city of Anchorage appear to have rejected Proposition 5, which would have “added protections for people regardless of ‘sexual orientation or transgender identity’ to the city’s civil rights laws,” the New York Times reports.

With 97.5 percent of the precincts reporting — and a “surprisingly strong turnout” that overwhelmed some polling stations — the measure failed 58 percent to 42 percent. Prior to the election, polls showed Proposition 5 winning with 50-41 support from voters, but an ugly campaign led by an Anchorage megachurch known as Anchorage Baptist Temple may have taken its toll.

AK, USA: Voters to Decide Anchorage LGBT Non Discrimination Law Tomorrow

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

Anchorage Gay Rights InitiativeTomorrow, voters in Anchorage, Alaska will be voting on Proposition 5, which One Anchorage explains:

…simply provides to gay and transgender Alaskans the same legal protections that we already provide to other persons in Anchorage in employment, financial practices, housing, and restaurants, department stores and other businesses.

John wrote about the importance of ballot measure last month:

They’ve got a nasty religious right up there that’s been thwarting their efforts for 35 years. This is the year to stop the bigots.

NH, USA: Behind the Failed Marriage Equality Repeal Vote

Monday, March 26th, 2012

New Hampshire Marriage Equality RepealLast week the overwhelmingly Republican New Hampshire statehouse voted, well, overwhelmingly to preserve gay marriage. The bill under consideration would have made New Hampshire the first state to repeal gay marriage. Initially, gay activists only hoped to keep the vote under two-thirds of the House, so that Democratic Gov. John Lynch could torpedo it with a veto. But when it came up for a vote, it didn’t even capture a majority of the House’s 297 Republican representatives, elected in the conservative tsunami of 2010.

How can this be? We’re in the middle of a Republican presidential primary, normally a time for conservatives to beat their chests over social and culture-war issues. And the most recent Republican Party platform promises to amend the United States Constitution to prohibit any further gay nuptials.

Freedom to Marry, which led the campaign against the repeal bill, credits its success in part to inroads it has made nationally with Republicans. Freedom to Marry’s founder, Evan Wolfson, credits conservatives like Ted Olson — who led the challenge to Proposition 8 in California — and former Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman with accelerating that trend.

NH: NOM Promises to Hold Lawmakers Accountable for Marriage Equality Repeal Failure

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

NOM LogoNational Organization for Marriage President Brian Brown on Wednesday pledged to hold “every” New Hampshire lawmaker accountable for failing to repeal the state’s marriage equality law — all 211 of them.

Earlier in the day, the Republican-dominated New Hampshire state House voted 211-116 not to repeal the state’s two-year-old marriage equality law.

“We are very disappointed in the failure of the New Hampshire House of Representatives to pass compromise legislation restoring marriage and providing for civil unions for same-sex couples,” Brown said, in a statement.

NH: House to Vote on Marriage Equality Repeal Today

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

New Hampshire Marriage Equality RepealAs we’ve been reporting over the past couple of weeks, the New Hampshire House is scheduled to vote today on a hideous bill (HB 437) from Rep. David Bates that would repeal the state’s marriage equality law.

The AP explains:

The bill, scheduled for a House vote on Wednesday, calls for repealing gay marriage in March 2013 and replacing it with a civil unions law that had been in place in 2008 and 2009. Gay marriages occurring before the repeal took effect would still be valid, but future gay unions would be civil unions. The bill also would allow voters could weigh in through a nonbinding November ballot question.

If the House passes the repeal measure, it would go to the Senate; both houses are controlled by Republicans. Democratic Gov. John Lynch has promised to veto the bill if it reaches his desk.

NH: House to Vote on Marriage Equality Repeal on March 21st

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

New Hampshire Marriage Equality RepealNew Hampshire lawmakers are scheduled to vote on March 21 on a measure that would repeal the state’s marriage equality law.

The expected vote in the New Hampshire House of Representatives will take place a little more than a week after state Rep. David Bates (R-Windham) said he will add an amendment to House Bill 437 that would ask voters in a non-binding referendum whether they support the reinstatement of the state’s civil unions law that took effect in 2007. Craig Stowell, chair of Standing Up for New Hampshire Families, described the proposal as a “desperate, last minute Hail Mary pass” to garner support for the measure.

A WMUR/University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll in early February found that 59 percent of state residents oppose HB 437. Forty-four percent of respondents who took part in a similar survey last October said they are more likely to vote against a candidate who supports the repeal of the state’s marriage equality law.

NC: Another County Plans Vote in Support of Amendment One

Saturday, March 10th, 2012

Moore County and Amendment OneIf member Nick Picerno has his way, the Moore County Board of Commissioners will vote in April in support of the proposed state constitutional amendment against gay marriage.

Commissioner Chairman Larry Caddell says he favors Picerno’s plan, which came to light during an exchange on the measure, called Amendment One, on the Facebook page of the county tea party organization.

In a Feb. 28 message forwarded from Moore County Republican Party Chairman Bob Levy to the Moore TEA Citizens’ Facebook page, 12th District Chairwoman Marlynn Burns commented: “Far too many of our voters are not aware of the marriage amendment that will be on the May primary ballot. Please join me in an effort to reach out to the voting public to raise awareness of the May ballot initiative. Our liberal opponents are organized and well-funded. We are leaders. This is our battle; this is our time to step forward.”
