DC: City Leaders Urge House GOP Not to Strip Marriage Equality Law

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

With the spending season underway on Capitol Hill, D.C. Mayor Vincent C. Gray joined activists Wednesday to urge Congress not to attach social policy “riders” to the District’s budget.

A House appropriations subcommittee will meet June 16 to consider a bill that includes the District’s budget for fiscal 2012. In past years, particularly when Republicans have controlled the House, that measure has been a magnet for language that changes city laws or restricts the use of locally raised funds.

In April, President Obama and House Republicans cut a spending deal that included a prohibition on government-funded abortions in the District and that revived and expanded a controversial private-school voucher program. House Republicans failed in their effort to include a ban on District-run needle exchange programs. That issue could surface again during next week’s session, and local officials and activists are also concerned that Republicans may target the city’s laws on same-sex marriage, medical marijuana and guns.

DC Church Pushes for Marriage Equality Throughout Methodist Church

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

DC’s Foundry United Methodist Church has a rich history. It’s the church attended by the Clintons when Bill was president. And, the Church and its Senior Minister, Rev. Dean Snyder, are now taking a leading role in changing the United Methodist Church’s position on same sex-marriage. There was major progress in that direction over the weekend. From Washington Post:

The Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church narrowly approved a groundbreaking same-sex marriage resolution Saturday, setting the stage for a high-stakes vote on the matter at the national conference next year.

The resolution, passed at the church’s annual local conference, would amend the church’s Book of Discipline to allow pastors to perform same-sex marriages and ceremonies in member churches in jurisdictions where legislatures already have approved gay marriage laws, such as the District.

DC: IL Representative Speaks Out Against DOMA

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

Mike QuigleyThis morning, at a hearing focused on the Obama Administration’s decision that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley (IL-05) continued his efforts to fight back against inequality by stating that the unjust law was based on nothing more than a moral disapproval of gay and lesbian couples. Quigley cited the Supreme Court, which has said numerous times that expressing moral disapproval for a group is an illegitimate basis for a law.

After describing in detail DOMA’s lack of constitutionality and misguided legislative history, Quigley added, “Let’s be clear: DOMA isn’t just an unconstitutional law, it’s dumb public policy.

Every one of the stated rationales for DOMA has been refuted by our better judgment or our shared experiences … There’s nothing radical about being allowed to marry the person you hold closest in your heart. And there’s nothing radical about expecting that union to receive the full protection of the law.”

DC: Dems Grill Anti Marriage Equality Witnesses at GOP’s DOMA Hearing

Friday, April 15th, 2011

Democrats came out swinging on Friday during a House subcommittee hearing on the Department of Justice announcement that it would curtail its defense of the federal ban on recognition of same-sex marriages.

The hearing, entitled “Defending Marriage,” was called by Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.), the new Republican chairman of the subcommittee. Franks called only three witnesses — two of which have taken high-profile stances against same-sex marriage and the DOJ decision to limit its defense of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

One witness, Ed Whelan, head of a religious conservative think tank called the Ethics and Public Policy Center, claimed the Obama administration’s decision to limit its defense of DOMA was the culmination of a long-standing strategy by Obama to promote same-sex marriage.

DC: Jewish Rabbi Organizes Wedding Trip for 7 Charlotte Same Sex Couples

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

Seven WeddingsRabbi Judy Schindler of Charlotte’s Temple Beth El says she’s been planning for this weekend for nine years. In 2002, as she officiated at her Reform Jewish synagogue’s first-ever commitment ceremony for a same-sex couple, she promised herself this: When a state made it legal for gays and lesbians to get married, she would help Charlotte-area couples get there and get wed.

Sunday in Washington, D.C., Schindler will deliver on that promise and, as she sees it, bang the drum for committed love and historic social change.
Seven times, in fact.

At 11:30 a.m., Schindler and two other clergywomen from Charlotte – one Christian, one Unitarian Universalist – will legally marry seven same-sex couples from their congregations at the elegant Washington Club in Dupont Circle.

DC: House GOP Going After DC Marriage Equality

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Washington DC Gay MarriageThe Republicans just can’t quit their legislative gay-bashing. They’re taking aim at DC’s marriage law. Can’t say we expected this to happen:

Jim Jordan, chairman of the 176-member Republican Study Committee, is leading an effort by conservatives to press House leaders for floor votes in opposition to gay marriage.

Jordan’s first project is a draft proposal that would set up a referendum to overturn a year-old District of Columbia law recognizing marriages of gay and lesbian couples. The move comes as conservatives express a desire to move beyond a focus on spending cuts and expand the House majority’s legislative agenda to include social issues.
