WA: Profile of Sponsor of Anti Marriage Equality Initiative

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Profile of Steven PidgeonIt’s been less than a month since Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire (D) signed her state’s marriage equality bill, but a number of anti-gay efforts to repeal the law are already underway. One such effort – Initiative 1192 – was filed in January by attorney Stephen Pidgeon (R), who is also a candidate for State Attorney General. Long before becoming the spokesman for Initiative 1192, Pidgeon made a name for himself peddling extreme right-wing conspiracy theories, ranging from “birther” theories about President Obama’s eligibility for office to accusations that Obama is the anti-Christ.

Pidgeon’s History Of Peddling “Birther” Conspiracy Theories

Pidgeon Led A 2008 Lawsuit Challenging Obama’s Presidential Eligibility. According to WorldNetDaily:

A new case challenging Barack Obama’s natural-born citizenship and, therefore, constitutional eligibility to serve as president has the potential to clear a hurdle that caused several other similar cases’ dismissal: the issue of “standing.”

[...]

In Washington state’s Broe v. Reed case, however, plaintiff’s attorney Stephen Pidgeon says a unique state statute grants everyday citizens the required standing.

Personal Stories Changed Marriage Equality Votes in Three States

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Marriage Equality Personal StoriesThe personal experiences of friends, family or constituents persuaded a crucial group of Republican lawmakers to vote for same-sex marriage in three state legislatures last month, in some cases tipping the balance in favor of legalizing gay matrimony.

Among them were two Washington state legislators with gay relatives, a New Jersey state senator who changed her mind while working on an anti-bullying measure and a Maryland state House delegate inspired by a gay couple coping with cancer.

“All politics is personal,” Republican Washington state Senator Steve Litzow said in explaining his vote to support gay marriage legislation.

WA: Short Circuiting the Anti Marriage Equality Vote

Sunday, March 4th, 2012

Washington State Marriage EqualityON Feb. 13 Washington became the seventh state to legalize gay marriage. Unfortunately, this well-earned victory for equality already faces a two-pronged assault. Opponents of gay marriage are attempting to place on the November 2012 ballot an initiative to (re)define marriage as being “between a man and a woman.” Additionally, opponents are also gathering signatures in hopes of subjecting the new law to a statewide referendum.

While it’s likely that Washington voters would reject these efforts, those who favor marriage equality should not have to wait until November to know the fate of the new law. This is especially true for those most affected by the battle: gays and lesbians, who have had to wait too long for the right to marry the person they love, and should not be forced to endure nine more months of uncertainty.

Fortunately, a mechanism exists for short-circuiting the anti-gay marriage push. Just six days before Gov. Chris Gregoire signed the marriage equality bill into law, the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit struck its own blow for same-sex marriage when it held that California’s Proposition 8 was unconstitutional. Proposition 8 was passed by California voters in 2008 in response to a decision by the California Supreme Court that required the state to recognize gay marriage. Proposition 8 overturned that ruling by amending the state’s constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

WA: Attorney General Slips “Redefining Marriage” Into Marriage Equality Ballot Repeal Description

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

Washington Marriage Equality RepealWashington state GOP Attorney General Rob McKenna, who is also running for governor, used NOM’s “redefining marriage” wording when writing Referendum 74, the coming ballot measure to repeal same-sex marriage. Anne Levinson, attorney for Washington United, has already convinced a judge to reword one of McKenna’s anti-gay bills. Now she’s going after him on R-74.

Levinson will be headed back to court by February 27 over McKenna’s proposed R-74 language, which she calls “not as balanced and clear as we would like it to be.” Meanwhile, the state Democratic Party is accusing McKenna of “misusing his public office to advance his discriminatory views on marriage equality” via these ballot language recommendations.

For example: The phrase “redefine marriage” does not appear once in the gay-marriage bill signed into law by Governor Chris Gregoire on February 13.

WA: Marriage Equality Opponent Says Gay Marriage Like Bloodletting

Saturday, February 25th, 2012

Washington State Marriage Equality and BloodlettingJoseph Backholm, the Executive Director of the Family Policy Institute of Washington and the leader of the Protect Marriage Washington campaign to repeal Washington’s marriage equality law, appeared on The Janet Mefferd Show Thursday where he likened same-sex marriage to the medical practice of bloodletting.

Just as bloodletting was once a common practice until it was abandoned for not working, Backholm claimed, so too marriage equality for gays and lesbians will eventually be rejected even in states where it is legal.

He went on to argue that the movement for equal rights for gays and lesbians is not comparable to the civil rights movement because, according to Backholm, “today’s argument about the redefinition of marriage would be like the civil rights movement if the civil rights movement was an attempt to have black people be referred to as white people.”

Marriage Equality Foes Don’t Like Repeal Ballot Language

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Washington Marriage Equality Repeal Ballot MeasureOpponents of same-sex marriage don’t like the ballot language that Attorney General Rob McKenna has written for the referendum to overturn the law signed last week.

In a motion filed this week in Thurston County Superior Court, Preserve Marriage Washington argues that the ballot language leaves out a key element of the effect of the law, which will take effect on June 7 if opponents don’t gather enough signatures to qualify for the ballot by June 6. That element: the law would render the terms “husband” and “wife” gender neutral.

Voters who read the ballot title are not fully apprised of the legal effects of the law, PMW argues in its request to have the court change the ballot language to something closer to the language proposed when the referendum petition was filed with the state.

White House Asked About President Obama’s View on Marriage Equality During Washington Trip

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

White House and Marriage EqualityWhite House Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked about the progress of same-sex marriage in the states during President Obama’s visit to Washington State this morning. Gov. Chris Gregoire (D-WA) signed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage on Monday and has urged New Jersey governor Chris Christie (R) to enact the marriage equality bill that passed in his legislature yesterday.

Carney reiterated the administration’s position that “the states should be able to decide this issue,” but did not say if Obama’s support for the marriage rights of gays and lesbians was still “evolving”:

Q: Since we’re going to Washington, Washington State legalized same-sex marriage this month. And as you know, Governor Christie is promising to veto a bill legalizing same-sex marriage that passed the New Jersey assembly. I’m just wondering what does the President think about Washington State’s decision and then Governor Christie’s vow to veto legislation?

WA: Santorum to Meet With Marriage Equality Foes as Bill is Signed

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Rick Santorum and Washington State Marriage EqualityRick Santorum is scheduled to meet with gay marriage foes in Washington state on Monday, the same day Governor Chris Gregoire is holding a signing ceremony for a bill legalizing gay marriage in the state, The Seattle Times reported.

Gregoire will sign the bill into law at 11:30AM, making Washington the seventh state to legalize gay marriage.

The Democrat-controlled House approved the measure with a 55-43 vote on Wednesday, a day after a federal court declared California’s gay marriage ban, Proposition 8, in violation of the United States Constitution, and one week after the Washington Senate passed the measure with a wider margin than expected.

Bellingham, Washington Churches Announce Support for Marriage Equality

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

Washington State Marriage EqualitySome of the most vocal opposition to Washington’s soon-to-be-approved same-sex marriage law has come from politicians and clergy who believe they are protecting traditional religious values.

But a few Bellingham congregations, and dozens of faith groups around the state, are throwing their support behind the gay marriage bill passed by the state Legislature this month.

At a pro-gay-marriage panel co-hosted by the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship and Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood Saturday morning, Feb. 11, the three panelists urged the crowd of about 50 people to prepare for the coming months, when opponents plan to challenge the law with a referendum.
