Four Marriages and One Wedding: A Prop 8 Story

Monday, February 13th, 2012

Four Marriages and a WeddingI once thought only celebrities like Liz Taylor and Natalie Wood married the same man twice. But I’ve got them beat. By my count, I’ve been married to the same man four times now. And if the fight over same-sex marriage makes its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, my marriages could outpace Henry VIII’s.

By marriages, I don’t mean weddings. I’ve had only one wedding, in October 2008. My spouse, Jeff Bechtloff, and I were wed during that brief window of hopefulness when same-sex marriage was legal in California. That was before the voters of my home state decided in a spasm of fear and misinformation to outlaw gay marriage with Proposition 8, which rewrote the constitution so that “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.” As you’ll recall, Nov. 4, 2008, was the day Barack Obama was swept into office with the promise of “change.” But for me and so many other gays and lesbians, that election day was just another ugly example of the same-old same-old.

In the three years since our wedding, Jeff and I have kept a wary eye on the court challenges to Prop 8. Today’s ruling by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals elicited cheers from us, but we’ve learned the hard way not to get too excited about these incremental legal wins. Watching the fight over gay marriage has been a lot like seeing Charlie Brown try to kick the football: every time he thinks he’ll finally make that field goal, the conniving Lucy snatches it away. It’s a funny gag in a cartoon–but not so amusing in real life, when your most personal and meaningful relationship hangs in the balance.

Australian MP to Marry PartnerTHE first openly gay state MP, Ian Hunter, will marry his long-term partner, Leith Semmens, in Spain at the end of the year.

It is believed Mr Hunter will be the first sitting gay politician of any Australian parliament to be married, although the ACT’s Andrew Barr has entered a civil union with his partner, The Advertiser reported.

Mr Hunter and Mr Semmens, who have been together for more than 20 years, had planned to marry in New York last year but were held up because the Federal Government refused to grant the necessary paperwork that would have allowed the ceremony to be conducted in the US.

Neil Patrick Harris Ready to Marry Partner

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

Los Angeles: Actor Neil Patrick Harris detests it when people refer to David Burtka as his gay partner. He feels “husband” would be a more appropriate word, and hints at tying the knot with the chef.

The 38-year-old has been involved with Burtka for over five years and is now eager to marry him, reports showbizspy.com.

“I`m not the biggest fan of the word `partner`. It either means that we run a business together or we`re cowboys. `Boyfriend` seems fleeting, like maybe we met two weeks ago,” said Harris.

Ricky Martin Marriage Rumor False

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

A spokesman for Ricky Martin has denied the musician will marry his partner Carlos Gonzalez Abella in New York on 28 January.

The El Nuevo Dia in Puerto Rico reported that the singer would tie the knot in the north-eastern US state, but the claim has been unequivocally denied. A spokesman told news outlets the South American paper has published “a completely incorrect report”.

Speculation about whether the couple would marry has been rife. Martin himself has said he would marry in his native Puerto Rico if they legalised marriage equality.

NY: Gay Couple Marries in Prison

Wednesday, December 14th, 2011

Gay Couple Marries in PrisonLast spring New York legalized same-sex marriage, which allowed thousands of gay and lesbian couples finally to tie the knot. Earlier this week, in another landmark event, an inmate at the Auburn Correctional Facility and his boyfriend became the state’s first gay couple to marry in a prison, the Auburn Pub reported in a Dec. 13 article.

Inmate Ronald Cook, 31, married Marc Rodriguez, a former Auburn inmate, in a civil ceremony. The couple has been together since 2002 when they first met in the Auburn prison, which is located in the small city of Auburn, N.Y., the capital of Cayuga County, an isolated area Upstate. The closest cities are Rochester and Buffalo.

“(Cook) was the water porter in our company,” Rodriguez told the newspaper. “I said something smart to him because he didn’t give me any water. He said, ‘Did you just say something smart to me?’ And we’ve been best friends ever since.”

Australia: Gay Couple Hoping for Wedding Bells By Next September

Sunday, December 4th, 2011

Australia Gay WeddingBroome couple Ben McHardy and Scott Goodhill have already started planning their wedding on Cable Beach for September 8 next year, complete with fireworks, bridesmaids and a cake crafted in the image of Kylie Minogue. The pair, who got engaged on stage at the singer’s Perth concert this year, are delighted by recent moves to recognise gay marriage under Australian law but know there are plenty of hurdles.

“They’ve voted to vote . . . it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me,” Mr McHardy said. “I personally think, just get on with the show.”

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is yet to announce whether he will allow Liberal MPs a conscience vote on the issue but the couple are hopeful he will. They believe there is overwhelming public support for the legislation, which should be introduced and passed without delay.

IA: Lesbian Couple Just Wants Wedding Cake Debacle to End

Sunday, November 20th, 2011

Iowa Wedding Cake DebacleAfter Trina Vodraska and Janelle Sievers were denied services by Victoria Childress, the owner of Victoria’s Cake Cottage in Des Moines, Iowa, last week — and were chastised about their sexual orientation and their upcoming wedding — firestorm or protest broke out from LGBT folks and allies. Childress has since made multiple local and national media appearances.

Yesterday, Vodraska and Sievers issued a statement with hope that they can “move on from this hurtful experience and continue planning their wedding” with family and friends.

“We have been a loving, committed couple for 8 years and on the day the Iowa Supreme Court granted us the freedom to marry, we got engaged. Ever since, we have been looking forward to our wedding day and have enjoyed making our wedding plans. What happened on Thursday was both disappointing and painful experience. We remain saddened by this incident and are grateful for the support we have received. We wish to put this situation behind us.

Freedom to Marry’s Evan Wolfson to Marry Partner

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

When I opened the invitation my breath caught. “Cheng He and Evan Wolfson invite you to join us in celebrating our exercise of the freedom to marry.” How fitting that the single most tenacious and tireless advocate for the freedom of same-sex couples to marry was himself, finally, getting hitched… I mean, married.

Before many of us ever did, Evan understood the significance of that word. He knew that “words matter” and that as long as the M-word was withheld from us and our relationships, we would never win full dignity, justice, and equality. Years before there was a Cheng He for him to marry, Evan was fixedly determined that this culture would see our relationships free from stigma and as fully authentic and honest and real.

Twenty-eight years before Evan’s big day he wrote his Harvard Law School thesis on why gay couples should be able to marry. To say he was for gay couples marrying before it was cool is a profound understatement — he was for it when most everyone in the world couldn’t even conceive of it. Yet there he was, plugging away, assertively, relentlessly, yet always hopefully, year after year, making the case within the LGBT community and debating our opponents. He was co-counsel in the landmark 1993 Hawaii marriage case, Baehr v. Miike, which made so many of us recognize that this vision could become reality.

MD: Democrat Who Turned Against Marriage Equality Bill Allegedly Stole Campaign Funds For Wedding

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Maryland Gay MarriageMaryland Delegate Tiffany T. Alston is in deep trouble. The Democrat from Prince George’s district has been charged with felony theft, misdemeanor theft, fraudulent misappropriation by a fiduciary and she also violated two election laws.

She apparently stole all of this money to pay for the expenses of her wedding. Here is the kicker, Alston is dead set against same-sex marriage.

Apparently, marriage is so sacred and homosexuality so bad, that Alston would vote against it no matter what, but has no problem breaking one of the Ten Commandments because she was getting married. It is alleged that she wrote herself checks and cashing them for at least $3,560 in expenses for her wedding. She also diverted some funds to help pay the salary of an employee in her law firm.
