TX: Lesbian Dallas Judge Refuses to Perform Weddings Until Everyone Can Marry

Friday, February 24th, 2012

Dallas Judge and Marriage EqualityDallas County Judge Tonya Parker says she won’t perform marriage ceremonies until gay couples can wed.

During a Feb. 21 meeting, Parker told the Stonewall Democrats of Dallas that while she has the power to perform legal marriage ceremonies in her court, she will not.

“I use it as my opportunity to give them a lesson about marriage inequality in this state because I feel like I have to tell them why I’m turning them away,” Parker said. “So I usually will offer them something along the lines of, ‘I’m sorry. I don’t perform marriage ceremonies because we are in a state that does not have marriage equality, and until it does, I am not going to partially apply the law to one group of people that doesn’t apply to another group of people.’ And it’s kind of oxymoronic for me to perform ceremonies that can’t be performed for me, so I’m not going to do it.”

RI: Gay Couples Leaving State to Marry

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

Rhode Island Marriage EqualityDespite Rhode Island’s new civil union law, we’ve learned a growing number of gay couples are crossing the border or moving out of state to get married. And some studies show Rhode Island could be missing out on millions in wedding costs and tax dollars.

We’ve learned only 14 couples have entered into civil unions since the law passed this summer. But census data shows nearly 600 gay couples from Rhode Island spent their wedding day and their cash in other states.

For newlyweds Sarah and Theresa Masnik, it was love at first sight. The URI and Roger Williams grads met in Providence, where they lived together for four years. “That’s where we met,” says Theresa. “That’s where we fell in love, where we had our first date on Federal Hill.

US: Navy Drops Plan to Allow Gay Weddings in Military Chapels After GOP Protest

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Led by Republican Representative Todd Akin of Missouri, 63 members of the Republican caucus have forced the Navy to table its decision to allow chaplains to officiate at gay marriage and civil union ceremonies on base once “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is lifted, the AP reported.

The military’s ban on open gay service was repealed by Congress in December and the Pentagon has begun training for the policy’s end, which is expected before the end of the year.

In an April 13 memorandum from chief of Chaplains Rear Admiral Mark Tidd, the Navy said chaplains would be allowed to officiate at ceremonies “consistent with the tenets of his or her religious organization.”

And under one budding tree, barely noticed by a passing stream of pedestrians, Baltimore residents Jessica Leshnoff and Holly Beatty prepare to wed.

We gather today to marry Jessica and Holly. This is your time; this is your day. Today you once again declare your love and commitment to each other: this time sanctioned not only by your love, your vows and your solemn commitment, but by the law.
