They were introduced into the Wyoming Legislature with titles like “validity of marriages,” “marriage definition” and “defense of marriage,” but many couples believe the intention of the bills is clear — deny them equal rights and protections under the law.
Couples like Jowe La Vallie and Robert Van Kerrebrook and Ariane Jimison and Rachel Kalenberg have, for years, quietly coexisted in Wyoming. They are neighbors, business owners and volunteers in the community, yet they are forced to live in relative seclusion.
In part, the seclusion is self-imposed because of fear of an unaccepting community, and in part it comes from what they believe is unequal treatment under the law. To them, the “Equality State” fails to live up to its name.
