Houston Gay Rights Opponents Turn in Signatures to Repeal LGBT Rights Ordinance

Written by scott on July 5th, 2014

It looks like opponents of the new LGBT rights ordinance in Houston have turned in more than enough signatures to force a public vote in November.

LGBTQ Nation reports:

Opponents of Houston’s new LGBT-inclusive equal rights ordinance on Thursday delivered what they say are thousands of voters’ signatures requesting that it be repealed. The group, consisting of pastors and faith-based organizations, said they had collected more than 50,000 signatures calling for a ballot referendum aimed at repealing the measure; a total of 17,269 valid signatures are required to place the issue on the November ballot. They say they want the public to have a chance to vote on the anti-discrimination ordinance, and not just city council members.

It’s amazing to me that these folks hate us enough to want to block even employment and housing protections for the LGBT community. Remember how they always used to tell us it was just about the word “marriage”?

    Bigotry hiding behind religion.

So sad that so many people have ceded their mind to the prehistoric fairy tales and fables known as religion. Faith is the single most pernicious culturally contrived force in the world. On a bright side, at least we now know the names of 50,000 people who are delusional.

Cannot believe in the 2014 that bigotry and hatred are still alive and well in this land of “liberty and justice for all.” There is still so much discrimination and marginalization in America and we should all be ashamed of this.

What happened to love thy neighbor as you would. thy self? These people who pick and choose and reinterpret things from the bible that suit their own prejudices are not Christians. They are vicious, bigoted, hatemongers that are just looking for ways to make other people with different ideas from theirs. suffer. Then they sit back and feel holier than thou because ‘we followed the word of God the way we say he ment.”

Isn’t it in the constitution that religion and politics shall be separated? We need to make a petition stating that religious leaders shall not be able to make any petitions

  7. Tara says:

Religion should be practiced in your home or your churches not to be practiced in public keep your religion and bigotry to yourselves

Faith and sexuality are completely compatible. Faith is not for the weak or faint at heart! It takes strong individuals like myself who love even those fighting for religious freedom. We all need to lay down our swords and love each other. The right wing conservatives need to stop bringing hatred. The gay community needs to stop bashing the religious community! Neither group is going away. We need to love all individuals no matter what their beliefs are to be.

Perhaps it’s time to fight fire with fire….maybe we in the LGBT community need to start a petition to start being able to fire christians from their jobs, prevent them from living renting/buying?
