Come On, Supreme Court, OK Marriage Equality

Monday, September 15th, 2014

US Supreme Court ColorMarriage equality can sound like a political cause. It’s been the subject of intense courtroom drama. But to Beverly Sevcik and Mary Baranovich, it’s personal. It’s about whether the Constitution protects their individual rights. That’s why it is welcome news that the U.S. Supreme Court may be preparing to bring down the gavel on discriminatory laws.

The court will look at same-sex marriage cases from five states later this month at the first conference of its 2014 term. The court could agree to hear one or more cases, deny them all or delay a decision.

The need for the court to provide guidance is paramount. Three appeals courts have thrown out same-sex bans, and other appeals courts face challenges. Sevcik and Baranovich are the lead couple in a Nevada case that was argued before the Ninth Circuit Court this week. That court is expected to strike down laws against same-sex marriage in Nevada and Idaho.

Win, lose, or draw in Arizona?

Thursday, February 27th, 2014

While Governor Brewer’s decision to veto SB 1062 is obviously the right decision to make, it doesn’t make for a complete victory on this issue or this bill.  Simply by passing the legislation in the first place the state legislature legitimized feelings of bigotry and hatred, particularly toward the LGBTQ community.  Passage of this legislation said, in essence, “Its OK to hate and discriminate”.  Clearly the wrong message to send anytime or anywhere.

Now that the bill has been vetoed those who supported it will undoubtedly do as they typically do and blame “the liberal media” while completely ignoring the fact that this legislation is a clear violation of the US Constitution.  They will feel victimized and may lash out toward members of the LGBTQ community in Arizona and elsewhere around the country where these measures are offered up, and defeated (as they should be).

Words and actions have consequences.

USA, Arizona: My Take on Arizona

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

Right to Discriminate - Rocco's PizzeriaI can think of few things that would be a more clear violation of our constitution than what is being attempted in Arizona, Missouri, Georgia, Kansas, Ohio, and I’m sure others will follow suit.  Laws that would legalize discrimination have no place in America.  Passing them only validates homophobia, intolerance, and bigotry.  If Governor Jan Brewer vetoes this laws, bigots and homophobes will claim she only did so because of the “liberal media” and not realize that this kind of law is simply wrong.

Like I said, the simple act of passing this law by Arizona’s legislature has fed the fires of hate.  There need to be consequences for these actions.  That is why I created a petition demanding that the NFL relocate the 2015 Super Bowl.  Regardless of whether or not it gets signed into law, the NFL needs to take a stand.

USA, Arizona: Marriage Equality Advocates Rally in Phoenix

Tuesday, September 17th, 2013

Arizona mapMarriage equality advocates in Arizona held a rally in Phoenix yesterday.

The Arizona Daly Star reports:

Hoping to create a change in attitudes, a coalition of civil-rights groups is taking the first steps today to convince Arizonans that letting gays wed would be a good thing. The education campaign being launched comes five years after 56 percent of those who went to the polls voted to amend the Arizona Constitution to define marriage in this state as strictly between one man and one woman. Supporters of rescinding the ban contend there are Arizonans who can be convinced — if not now, then by 2016 — to support repeal.

I’d love to see marriage equality in my home state – the GOP has held sway there for so long. It’s time for a little progressive action.

Arizona, USA: Phoenix Mayor Pledges Support for Bisbee in Civil Unions Fight

Sunday, April 7th, 2013

Phoenix Mayor Greg StantonMayor Greg Stanton of Phoenix, Arizona’s largest city, is stepping in to help Bisbee fight the state’s Attorney General, Tom Horne, over the city’s new civil unions ordinance. KTAR reports:

“If Mr. Horne is looking to sue somebody, he should look at Phoenix. I stand with Bisbee.” Stanton said he would direct the Phoenix City Council to stand by Bisbee during litigation should Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne choose to follow through with a lawsuit. Stanton said he supports “full rights, including marriage equality, for same-sex partners,” and he “looks forward to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on marriage equality.”

I like this guy!

In related news, a potential gubenatorial candidate has launched a petition to support the city, PR Newswire reports:

Arizona business and education leader Fred DuVal , who is exploring a run for Governor, today launched a petition on the popular website change.org calling on Attorney General Tom Horne to drop his planned lawsuit against the City of Bisbee for its new civil unions ordinance… “Please join me in taking a stand to support Bisbee,” said DuVal. “Arizonans cherish our personal freedoms and Bisbee has the right to offer civil unions without big government interference. Such actions are a frivolous use of state resources.”

You can find the petition here.

The progressive cause isn’t entirely dead in Arizona.
