USA, Massachusetts: Adding Insult to Injury, Parade Lets Scott Lively March

Monday, March 17th, 2014

Scott LivelyThe man at least partially responsible for stirring up homophobia in Russia and Uganda and encouraging both to pass harsh anti gay laws marched in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Boston yesterday, while gays were turned away.

Seriously.

On Top Magazine reports:

Scott Lively, an ardent opponent of gay rights and a Massachusetts gubernatorial candidate, marched in South Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade on Sunday. The parade’s policy banning gay organizations from participating has been widely criticized. Many politicians, including Mayor Marty J. Walsh and Congressman Stephen Lynch, skipped the parade over the policy.

Could the organizers of the Boston St. Patrick’s Day Parade be any more insultingly homophobic and anti-gay than this?

Traveling at the Speed of Love: Winning the Race for Equality

Thursday, November 14th, 2013

Five years ago last week, on Election Day 2008, California’s electorate passed Prop 8, marking perhaps the most notable low point in the marriage equality movement as a minority was stripped of a previously recognized constitutional right. As of this week five years ago, only two states – Massachusetts and Connecticut – fully recognized the marriages of same-sex couples.

How far we’ve come since then. And how fast.

USA, Hawaii/Nevada: Fourteen States File Brief for Marriage Equality

Sunday, October 27th, 2013

Gay Wedding RingsMassachusetts AG Martha Coakley is leading a coalition of states that’s filing a brief urging the courts to bring marriage equality to Hawaii and Nevada.

Boston.com reports:

Coakley is leading a coalition of states in filing a brief with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals arguing the laws violate the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and should be struck down. Coakley said the experience in Massachusetts, the first state to legalize gay marriage, shows that allowing same-sex couples to marry only strengthens the institution of marriage. Coakley led the filing of the amicus brief on behalf of Massachusetts and 13 other states, including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, Washington and the District of Columbia.

Both cases are reaching the appeals stage at the same time.
